An assistant tennis coach at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, Donna Brumfield, and her group checked into the Palatine Holiday Inn Express in October 2012 for a tennis meet.

She ended up meeting bedbugs, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court. Before the ensuing ordeal ended, Brumfield was forced to chop off her cherished, waist-length dreadlocks she had grown for 13 years, the lawsuit alleges.

If you know how long it takes to grow dreadlocks, you understand the trauma of losing my hair, says Brumfield, of the south suburbs, who is in her 50s.

Harder to explain is the trauma that affects travel for me now. I travel a lot for my work, and every time I have to stay at a hotel I just get filled with anxiety, she said.

In the Chicago area named first in bedbug infestations for the second year in a row Brumfields lawsuit is exemplary of growing litigation over the creepy critters that have become a nuisance nationally, according to legal and bedbug-eradication experts.

The majority of the suits are between hotels and guests, or tenants and landlords.

Bed Bugs’ Infestation in Chicago Tops Latest Ranking, My Cleaning Products Tips Residents How to Kill Bed Bugs Quick …

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) January 21, 2014

A new ranking of the cities with the most bed bug infestations was released. And according to a report from chicagotribune.com dated January 16, 2014, Chicago, Illinois topped the list. In response to it, My Cleaning Products gave out a tip how to kill bed bugs quick to help the residents.

The report detailed that the ranking was conducted by one pest-control company. It said that it was based on the bed bug treatment it has implemented in the cities from January to December 2013.

Based on the report, it was already the second time for Chicago to lead the list of the cities with most bed bug infestations. Last year, it relayed that its top rank prompted the City Council to pass a new ordinance requiring condo associations to have a bed bug plan for detection, inspection and treatment of bed bugs.

Closely following Chicago on the list, related the report, were Los Angeles and Ohio. Respectively, they were on the second and third places, it shared. Meanwhile, New York dropped to the 17th spot from the 10th place last 2012, it relayed.

Here is an excerpt from the post Chicago Tops Bed Bug Infestation Ranking by My Cleaning Products.

Bed bugs are prevalent. With all the news about them almost everyday, that, you could easily tell. But do you know which city got the most number of them?

The latest ranking by a pest-control company has determined that for 2013, the infestations of bed bugs were the highest in Chicago. Last year, the city also topped the same ranking. And because of it, its council was prompted to pass a new ordinance last summer, which requires condo associations to have a plan for bed bug detection, inspection and treatment.

MCP said that the fact Chicago was on the top of bed bug infestation ranking twice shows that the vampire-like critters are truly hard to completely rid. And as it added, because of that they could also bring in huge expense for requiring professional help and thrashing out of affected items.

However, My Cleaning Products said that those expenses could be avoided. And the way to do it, it stated, is to be wary of bed bug signs and to respond to it quickly. With that, it said that one could detect and kill bed bugs early.

Second-hand items such as furniture and household accessories should be vigilantly inspected before bringing these objects into your home.

Change your bedding at least once a week as a standard household procedure. Use hot water to wash sheets; then machine dry everything at a medium to high temperature.

Metropolitan Tenants Organization » Bed Bugs – FAQ

What are bed bugs?Bed bugs are small, wingless insects that feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals. Bed bugs prefer human blood, but can also feed on pets if people arent present.

Are bed bugs disease carriers? There isnt any medical evidence that bed bugs pose any sort of health risk. Some people do, however, experience mild reactions to their bites. It is also possible for the bites to result in secondary infections if scratched.

How did I get bed bugs?A bed bug infestation is not an indicator of a lack of cleanliness. Bed bugs feed on blood and are attracted to CO2. They may have hitchhiked onto your belongings and into your home or, if you live in a multi-unit building, they may have traveled from an adjacent unit.

So, there really isnt any link between bed bugs and sanitation?None. Bed bugs are not attracted to filth nor do they feed on it. However, reducing clutter is extremely important as clutter can provide hiding space for bed bugs. Bed bugs will thrive in cluttered environments because the effectiveness of your pest control plan will be limited.

I have a bed bug infestation. What do I do? Around the House-Reduce clutter in the home. These are safe havens for bed bugs.-Vacuum frequently.-Wash clothes in hot water and dry in high heat for a minimum of 20 minutes. -Do not apply pesticides on your own. Applying pesticides should be left to licensed pest control professionals. -Never use bug bombs or total release foggers. These can worsen the infestation and are extremely harmful to your health.

Beds and Furniture-Steam clean your bed and other furniture at a heat of 120 degrees or more. -Encase your mattress and box spring with bed bug proof mattress protectors. -Do not apply pesticides to your bed or other furniture. Pesticides are often harmful to people. -Do not throw away your furniture until a pest control professional tells you that it cant be salvaged. -If you must throw away your bed or other furniture, please dispose responsibly. Render the furniture unusable by slashing all sides or spray paint bed bugs in large letters.

Remember, bed bugs and their eggs absolutely cannot survive temperatures higher than 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

Is my landlord responsible for ridding my unit of bed bugs? On June 5, 2013 Chicago alderman passed an ordinance on bed bug control. The ordinance requires eradication to be performed by a pest control professtional as many times as necessary to eliminate the reported problem. Click here to read the full ordinance. This ordinance goes into effect in December 2013.

Bed bug eradication is not an easy task and will almost always require a pest control professional who practices Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

My landlord wont accept responsibility. What should I do?You can call MTOs Tenants Rights Hotline to speak with a hotline counselor about your situation. The hotline is open Monday through Friday, 1pm 5pm. If you live in a building with 12 or more units and other renters in the building are living with bed bugs, you may also request a visit from an organizer who can assist you in getting your requests met by your landlord.
