Battling bed bug epidemic

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The presence of bed bugs is being called a nationwide epidemic and Vigo County in not exempt from the growing problem.

Local homeless shelters also battle with the unwanted guests and work to prevent them.

The problem is they are often difficult to get rid of for good.

"They are hard to get rid of," says Christina Keller, Health Educator, Vigo County Health Department.

A shelter provides a hot meal and warm place to stay but what about getting something there you didn't want.

"We see and we have health complaints from people in Vigo County we get a lot of them from different places such as shelters and hotels," says Keller.

A News 10 viewer does not want us to share his name but he did share photos.

After a stay at a Wabash Valley shelter he ended up with what he believes are bed bug bites.

For a shelter preventing these pests can be an ongoing process.

"They are easy to transmit so they can come and go when you travel. A lot of times they can stay on luggage, on clothing so people who come in and out of homes and shelters will also bring those bed bugs with them," says Keller.

Bed Bugs Found in Indiana Apartment Complex, My Cleaning Products Suggests a Pesticide-Exempt Bed Bug Spray to Help …

Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) December 19, 2013

The presence of bed bugs in an apartment complex in Indiana has caused quite a scene. In response to it, My Cleaning Products suggested a pesticide-exempt bed bug spray that could safely kill bed bugs to help the residents and the critters' other victims.

In a report posted on December 11, 2013 by wane.com, a person named Donna Butler single handedly carried out a protest because of the pests, My Cleaning Products shared. It detailed that it all started after her son accidentally brought bed bugs to her home, which allegedly came from an apartment complex in the state.

According to the report, Butler's protest caught the attention of the South Adams Schools causing it to spray their buses as a precaution, MCP relayed. The growing concern of the people over the matter, it added, also grabbed the attention of Adams County Health Department prompting it to warn the complex and to plan to inspect it.

Here is a part of the post Bed Bug Presence Led to Protest by My Cleaning Products.

"Donna Butler was the person who had been protesting against the apartment management in cold weather. Based on a report, the bed bugs that her son accidentally spread to her home was from the complex. Because of that and because the problem has been going on for too long, she stated that she wanted the management and the owner to clean it up, hence, the protest.

MCP said that apartment complexes are very susceptible to bed bugs because of the high-traffic of people in them. The arrangement of their units, it added, also allows the easy transfer of the pests.

However, My Cleaning Products cleared that doesn't mean the public must be wary of bed bugs that are only in housing complexes. Given their prevalence, it stated that an individual must be careful of them everywhere. Moreover, it stressed that one must always be ready to eliminate bed bugs as doing so would prevent the worst things those pests could bring.

When choosing the products to use in the treatment though, MCP advised the public to be wary. It stated that most of the pesticides today contain chemicals that could endanger health and further pollute the environment.

But unlike them, it said that Bed Bug Bully is organic-based hence, it is safe. Apart from that, it stated that hotels, hospitals and pest-control have testified that it is effective. Being a pesticide-exempt bed bug spray, EPA also got it listed under its FIFRA 25(b). And with those advantages, it asserted that it is surely the best help to get.

Parents worry about bed bugs in Arlington High School

NORTHEAST SIDE Its not the kind of pests you expect to deal with at school, but Arlington High School has confirmed that they found at least one bed bug inside the school last week.

The school sent letters to parents late last week. Yet, some parents tell Fox 59 they knew about the issue days before that letter.

Mother Carrie Wooten said she was unhappy with the way the school handled the problem.

(Its) disgusting. I was very concerned because if she brings one of the bed bugs home then now I have bed bugs, Wooten said.

Wooten has decided to keep her daughter home from school until she can speak to the Health Department or get a better answer from the school.

Finding a bed bug does not mean that our school building is infested, Principal Alicia Hervey said in that letter. Bed bugs are often unknowingly brought into school by building occupants and as a result we may have future sightings.

Patrick Bruner, who owns Advanced Pest Management, said hes seen a huge increase in bed bug cases across Indiana this year.

Bruner did not treat Arlington High School, but says hes seen cases at schools before and that bed bugs can quickly reproduce.

Usually a female can lay anywhere from three to eight eggs a day. It takes about a week to 12 days for those to hatch, Bruner said.

Despite the schools statement that it is unlikely for bed bugs to reproduce and spread in schools, Bruner said its certainly possible.
