Bed bugs at KCI leads to closure of mezzanine in Terminal …

Bed bugs were discovered Thursday inside Terminal B of the Kansas City International Airport.

Airport staff found a live infestation on an upholstered chair in a sitting area near several restaurants, according to Kathleen Hefner, a spokeswoman for KCI. Bed bugs weren't found in any other area.

"The mezzanine area in Terminal B is closed briefly out of an abundance of caution to clean for bed bugs found (in a chair) by staff," Hefner said.

Bed bugs were discovered Thursday in Terminal B of the Kansas City International Airport, leading officials to close the mezzanine area.

Hefner stressed that the bed bugs, though located near restaurants, have not contaminated any food prep areas.

"This is not a food-related issue," she said. "The restaurants just happened to be adjacent to the seating in the area."

The area will likely reopen tomorrow, Hefner added.

Bed Bug shown next to a finger for size comparison In the photos below and attached slides, well show you exactly what bed bugs look like on human skin, a close up of an infested mattress showing the entire life cycle, in a cup (gross), next to a ruler for size comparison, crawling on the floor, hiding in a headboard, and even one caught crawling out of a stocking! How to Spot Bed Bugs in Used Furniture

Here is a great example of why you should not bring used furniture into your home without first making sure it isnt infested. Bed bugs in used furniture can lead to a complete infestation of the home as Leah123 explains. I have listed Leah123s story below and would like to thank her for taking the time to submit her story and pictures! By the way, you can click on the thumbnail to see the full picture.

Several months ago we were given a chair and around the same time my husband bought a used bed at a yard sale. Around May I think I was in the chair watching TV and saw a bug I had never seen before crawl out. Over the next few weeks I saw them maybe one or two is all, hadnt a clue what they were.

My husband also noticed some specked spots on the bed frame he had bought and put in guest room and he sprayed it w/raid or something. Well next thing we know we have bites between our thighs that itch and welt. Then in next few weeks I see more and more on the chair I mentioned. I found this site and bought a steamer and steamed the chair like crazy, took it apart and thought I got it good but I think my steamer isnt top of the line, it was 39$ at Walmart.

A few weeks ago one of our kids fell asleep in the chair then went to my bed to lie down. I went up 30 minutes later, turned on the light and there were 5 on pillow around her! I thought they attached to her and went up on her pajamas! Then I remembered reading a post here about dots on wooden headboard and realized my wooden headboard has those unique wooden markingsyeah.so I go in the dark with flashlight and theres 3 hiding in cracks of headboard!

I made bleach/dawn/water mixture (I think its supposed to be alcohol, but this works on contact too) and killed them, also took razor blade and ran through cracks and it came out with blood on it! So during the last few days I put Vaseline smeared on headboard and caught a few bed bugs trying to get to me lol.they got stuck trying!

About 3 nights ago I did that and was reading this site in the dark in my bed and guess what? Like 5 came 1 at a time at me, and I just happened to be reading the story of a dim light attracting them, go figure!! So tonight I took mattress and box springs off and to my dismay I found them, several on boxsprings, mattresses, etc!!!!

I sprayed a ton of the bleach mixture all any used furniture, my headboard, everything in fact! They were even in the slats of bedit sucks!!!! I probably found and killed 50, bed bugs after only seeing 20 total for months in either the chair, the guest bed and now here!! Tomorrow Im getting DE (Bed Bug Dust) and showing them whose boss!

Thanks soooo much for your site!!! God bless!

Update:Thanks for posting this, and whats amazing is I didnt know there was a nymph in the pic of the one on my headboard, eww!! Tonight I tried to puff DE around the baseboards, headboards, box spring, mattress etc and also did the bleach solution again.

Ive not been sleeping in there or going in my room for a few days really. I need help figuring out how to get the DE out of the bag and into the puffer thing without making a mess, I tried rolling up a piece of construction paperand I tried a funnel but its like it was too thick and wouldnt flow into the bottle? So Ive gotta finish tomorrow.

Thanks for posting my story..oh btw I rechecked all furniture everywhere else in my home and all seems ok, and the chair is nothing but ashes now, just dealing with my bed and hopefully that will be it. I only found about 5 alive tonight.

Also, an extremely helpful tool is a sticky lint roller!! Great for those bed slats that had tiny eggs and nymphs on them and also good for the crevices in the bed frame and seams on mattress after the dawn/alcohol/water spray.hope this helps someone!

Bed bugs have made a return with a vengeance, especially in the Seattle area. We are licensed, bonded, insured, and more importantly, trained in dealing with your bed bug problem. There are many methods and techniques for getting rid of bed bugs. Weve based our bed bug removal process on what has proven effective and also cost effective.

Because bed bugs have been so popular in the news during the last few years, many times people jump to the conclusion that the mystery bumps showing up on them are indeed bed bugs. Bed bugs have sure made a comeback, but first lets identify if you do in fact have them. The easiest way to check for bed bugs is to look. A large percentage of bed bugs are located within 5 feet of your bed. We recommend taking off all bedding, such as sheets, blankets, etc. and inspecting them thoroughly. Next, do a very thorough inspection of your mattress and box spring. Look carefully at all seams and especially on the bottom-side of your mattress. If you see any live bed bugs or dark spots, then you have bed bugs. Many times on an inspection we wont find any live bed bugs (because they are hiding), but well see the black spots they leave behind. Another common place to find evidence of bed bugs is on the bed itself, usually under the box spring. Again, look for live bed bugs or black spots. Other locations to search for bed bugs include couches, bookshelves, and electronic items close to your bed. Because everyone reacts differently to bed bug bites, it is nearly impossible to identify them from bites alone. IF YOU PREFER THAT A PROFESSIONAL PERFORM AND INSPECTION, WE WOULD BE GLAD TO ASSIST YOU. WE CHARGE $99 FOR AN INSPECTION.

Weve tried to make this simple for our customers. Unlike our competitors, we list our prices online, so you know how much youre paying before we come out. Below youll see a chart with our prices. The cost depends on how many rooms you need treated. The follow-up price is NOT per room, but total. So if you need 3 rooms treated we will charge you $419 on your first visit and $159 for each follow-up visit you need.

How many treatments does it take to get rid of bed bugs?

Bed Bugs can be very difficult to eradicate and there is no silver-bullet to getting rid of them. If prep work is done properly, then most customers only need one or two treatments, but this is not always the case. Some customers require three or more treatments. One thing to keep in mind is that bed bugs are hitchhikers, meaning they get a ride into your home. This can be from luggage, clothes, used furniture, friends, family, yourself, etc.. If bed bugs are continually introduced into your home, it can make a bed bug issue an ongoing problem.

In multi-unit settings, such as apartment or town homes, its possible that the bed bugs are coming from another unit. Unless the source of the problem is found, you can be dealing with an ongoing issue. In multi-unit settings we do recommend inspections be done in all units to help discover the source and then treat the infested units.

Please give each treatment 2 to 3 weeks to work properly. Bed bugs are not eliminated immediately. If treateddirectly, then a bed bug will die off quickly; however, most bed bugs are in hiding and are not treated via direct hit. As they come out of hiding, they will come in contact with our treatments, but it does take time to work. If after two to three weeks you are still having issues, then its time for another treatment. Its recommended to treat every two to three weeks until they are eliminated. Please contact our office to setup any follow-up treatments, if needed.

The resurgent of bed bugs has led to new research and methods. We are always looking for new and effective treatments, so our procedures may change from one treatment to another. Generally speaking though, here are some of the things that we do:

PREPARATION IS THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANTFACTOR FOR GETTING RID OF BED BUGS. Without full participation from the customer, it can be very difficult, if not impossible to eradicate bed bugs. The better the preparation, the more likely it is we eradicate bed bugs in one or two treatments.

Please note, that if preparation is not done when our technicians arrive for treatment, Eco Elite Pest Control will either 1). Perform a treatment as best as we can given the circumstances. You will still be charged the regular rate, even though a full treatment wasnt performed, or 2). We will reschedule for a different day and charge a $99 trip fee. The technicians holds the right to make the choice at time of service.

Make sure you follow ourBed Bug Prep Sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT DO BED BUG BITES LOOK LIKE? Each person reacts differently to bed bugs and many people do not react at all. There is no way to tell if someone has bed bugs based on bites/reactions. The best way to tell if you have bed bugs is via inspection.

CAN YOU SEE BED BUGS? Yes. Though they are small, an adult sized beg bug is similar in size to a lady bug. There are different stages in the life of a bed bug, and some stages they are very small, but you can see them with the naked eye. Bed bug eggs can be hard to see as they are a white/translucent color.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE BED BUGS? The most common answer is from the bites; however, some people do not react to bed bugs. Some customers actually see the bed bugs. The easiest way to tell is to inspect. Most of the time if you have bed bugs, they are found on the box spring, bed frame, or corners of a mattress. Many times when inspecting youll see bed bugs themselves, their white/translucent eggs, or their fecal matter, which looks like small black ink stains.

SHOULD I THROW AWAY MY MATTRESS? Generally you do not need to throw your mattress or any furniture away. Most of the time we can solve your bed bug problem without you going to this extreme; however, some types of furniture can be very difficult to treat. Your technician will let you know if any furniture should be discarded. If you do need to toss out any furniture, take necessary precautions to prevent bed bugs from transferring to other rooms.

ARE THEY ALWAYS FOUND IN MY BED? No. Bed bugs are present where people are present. They are also most active at night, and since they need humans to survive, theres a good chance they will be found in the bed, or near the bed. They can also be found in couches, chairs, carpets, or furniture.

Here is a close up photo of a blood filled bed bug that burst open into the hand of a person searching for an infestation. You can clearly see the eggs, whats left of the bug, and the blood coming in contact with skin and who knows where that blood came from!

Before viewing the following slides, let me first give you an idea of what youll be looking at by showing you bed bugs caught in their natural habitat! Lets start with a close up picture of an entire life-cycle, from eggs, to shell casings, and finally to maturity. Keep in mind that this infestation went hidden for a very long time before being discovered!

What a cute picture of these two bed bugs living the life! The big one shed his shell while the other looks toward the eggs.

Another cure picture of bugs but the little little one appears to be shy and trying to hide. Notice the different sized shells, tells an entire story and helps give an idea of how long they have been hiding out there.

This image is a great example of what youll look for when trying to spot an infestation. Simply lift up the mattress out of the frame and if you see something that looks like this, then you need to act, and fast! Send us a photo if you do!

This was slide 1, there are more pictures of bed bugs, such as this one next to a ruler to give you an idea of how small these little blood suckers really are!

Also, check out these horrible pictures of bed bug bites when these bugs attack, they really do a number as they did on these people, and you never know it happened until the next morning!
