We've all heard the reminder, "Sleep tight. Dont let the bed bugs bite!" But since their bites are often painless and skin reactions may not show for 1-2 weeks afterward, many people are unaware when bed bugs have been feeding on their blood.

Bed bugs are reddish-brown and about one-fourth of an inch in length.

Bed bug bite wounds may show as generalized minor swelling or raised bumps that itch.

Bed bugs are not known to carry or transmit any human disease.

Getting rid of bed bugs can be extremely difficult because they may hide many feet from the bed in furniture, baseboards, doorframes, or within voids in the wall until they venture out to feed.

When bed bug populations become large, or when a host becomes scarce because no one sleeps in the bed for a period of time, bed bugs may crawl into other rooms or squeeze through walls to enter neighboring locations. They may also be transported from place to place hiding in furniture, clothing, blankets and other belongings.

Evidence of bed bug activity includes live and dead bugs, dark spots on a mattress, box springs or bed frame, blood spots on sheets and empty tan-colored skins that are left behind when bed bugs shed their skins to molt into the next stage.

Bed bugs infest homes, hotel rooms, and apartments by hitching rides on luggage, furniture, and other items carried from an infested room to another location. Bed bug prevention is difficult because it takes only one female bug or a few eggs deposited onto a bag to begin a new infestation elsewhere. Typically, an infestation begins in a single motel room, hotel room or apartment and then may spread to neighboring units.

Getting rid of bed bugs is very difficult. A consultation with Terminix is recommended. Positive identification is important because bed bugs can be confused for bat bugs or swallow bugs. Misidentification can lead to unsuccessful bed bug control efforts.

Inspection is critical in preventing bed bugs from returning. Overlooking even the smallest crack in furniture may lead to a persistent infestation; therefore, beds, nightstands and related furniture often require disassembly and careful inspection. Carpets may need to be gently lifted along the edge and the space beneath treated. Baseboards, door and window frames and any visible crack will require treatment in infested rooms. Should furniture be moved from an infested unit to another unit, it should be carefully inspected and cleaned or treated as necessary to prevent the spread of bed bugs to the new room.

Furniture that is infested needs to be thrown out, and clearly marked as unusable due to bed bug infestation. It should also be tightly wrapped in plastic to keep from spreading them to other rooms as it is moved to the outside. People should take care when purchasing furniture at garage sales and should carefully inspect all sides and crevices for evidence of bed bugs. Picking up furniture that is seemingly in good condition left on the street for trash pick-up is not recommended.

Northwest Houston hotel guest bitten by bed bugs – KPRC

HOUSTON - A woman claims there were bed bugs in her hotel room in northwest Houston.

"I thought I was having an allergic reaction, but then we looked in the bed and there were bed bugs just crawling around on the bed," said Jenny Gerardo.

Her boyfriend shot disturbing video inside the Quality Inn on 290 and 43rd last Sunday morning.

"I have bites pretty much 20 to 25 bites all over me which have been nerve-wracking and hard to deal with especially when you're at work," said Gerardo.

Gerardo said she showed an employee the video and the hotel manger called her the next day.

"He was kinda like well, 'I already called somebody, there's nothing there so I don't know what else to tell you,' and he didn't even want to refund me my money," she said.

Gerardo said an exterminator confirmed they were bed bugs.

Since then though, Manager Rick Patel called her back apologizing and promising a refund for her one-night stay.

Patel told KPRC Channel 2 News a pest control company did not find beg bugs in the room. He added, "That same room was rented for two days and that guest didn't complain about any bed bugs. If anything, enjoyed staying with us."

For Gerardo, her stay at Quality Inn was anything but enjoyable.

"This is a serious situation. If there are really bugs in there, you have to take care of it. Someone else can come in there and get bit, kids and everything," she said.

Gerardo said now she's worried about the bed bugs in her home. An exterminator said the treatment could cost her about $1,500.

Bed bugs are not limited to the bed or the bedroom but instead will disperse throughout a dwelling. They will crawl considerable distances to obtain a blood meal.

bed bugs Bed bugs like to hide in small cracks and crevices close to where humans rest & sleep. They can be found behind baseboards, upholstery, and in furni- ture crevices. Other places to check are wall hangings such as picture frames, night stands, stuffed furniture, floorboard cracks, behind loose wallpaper, light switches, door and window frames, conduits, etc.

Not everyone reacts to bed bug bites and some have delayed reactions to the bite. Bite symptoms often appear in rows of several or more bites. Bed bugs have not been demonstrated to be effective transmitters of disease. Bed bug bite symptoms typically appear as red, itchy welts but can vary from one individual to the next. In heavy infestations, bed bugs may be found in wall voids, attics and other enclosed places. Bed bugs can be introduced into a structure via used furniture or in the belongings of someone who has been living in a bed bug infested situation. Bed Bugs – Arrow Termite and Pest Control

Bed Bugs

A few years ago bed bugs seemed like a myth and were only heard of through a nursery rhyme. However in recent years, bed bug cases have been more common and an increasing problem in major cities with international travel continuing to rise and the 1972 ban of DDT. It is not uncommon to find bed bugs even in nice hotels. Because bed bugs disfavor bright light, they are mainly active at night. Bed bugs have a tiny flat oval body which allows them to hide easily.

Waking up with itchy or bruised skin is a common sign of a bed bug problem. Although they are called bed bugs, they do not just live in beds. Clutter, baseboards, carpeting, sofas and other furniture are all posh resorts for bed bugs. Fortunately, a bed bug problem is entirely controllable under professional care. Using state of the art equipment and techniques, our certified technicians will inspect your homes environment and construction to identify the problem and determine the best course of action. We are committed to providing a quick, affordable, and most importantly, effective solution to your pest problem, and we take every measure to protect you and your familys safety throughout the process. So whether you suspect you have a bedbug problem or just want to make sure you never get one, we have the expertise and training to get rid of your unwanted house guests for good.

Besides gross, bed bugs are nocturnal insects that feed on human and pet blood. They need a blood meal in order to grow and produce eggs. They are about 1/8 inch long and reddish-brown (after feeding) with oval, flattened bodies. During the daytime, they hide in cracks close to where humans sleep, such as voids in mattresses, box springs, bedframes, pictures, baseboards, and headboards. Attracted to body heat and carbon dioxide, they can easily locate humans at night to feed. The only good thing associated with bed bugs is that they do not typically spread diseases.

Usually bed bugs are imported into a home through old furniture, beds, visitors, and luggage from a recent trip. Contrary to the common myth, cleanliness is not a determining factor when it comes to bed bug infestations. All that is required for bed bugs to thrive is an abundance of cracks in which to hide and the presence of warm-bodied hosts. A sure sign of bed bugs is when you see tiny reddish-brown bugs along the seams and crevices of your mattress, small blood stains on your mattress, and most obviously, if you start waking up with bruises and red bite marks on your body.
