The state of Maine (i /men/) (French: ltat du Maine) is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast, New Hampshire to the southwest, and the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the northwest and New Brunswick to the northeast. Maine is the northernmost portion of New England and is the easternmost state in the contiguous United States. It is known for its sceneryits jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, and its heavily forested interioras well as for its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams.

The original inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine were Algonquian-speaking peoples. The first European settlement in Maine was in 1604 by a French party. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples wiped out many of them over the years. As Maine entered the 18th century, only a half dozen European settlements still survived. Patriot and British forces contended for Maine's territory during the American Revolution and the War of 1812. Maine was an exclave of Massachusetts until 1820, when as a result of the growing population and a political agreement regarding slavery, it became the 23rd state on March 15 under the Missouri Compromise.

Maine is the only U.S. state to have a name that is one syllable long, and the only state which borders exactly one other state.

There is no definitive answer for the origin of the name Maine. The state legislature in 2001 adopted a resolution establishing Franco-American Day, which stated that the state was named after the ancient French province of Maine. Other theories mention earlier places with similar names, or claim it is a nautical reference to the mainland. The first known record of the name appears in an Aug. 10, 1622 land charter to Sir Ferdinando Gorges and Captain John Mason, English Royal Navy veterans, who were granted a large tract in present-day Maine that Mason and Gorges "intend to name The Province of Maine." Mason had served in Royal Navy in the Orkney Islands where the chief island was called Mainland, a more likely name derivation for these English sailors than the French province. Whatever the origin, the name was fixed in 1665 when the King's Commissioners ordered that the "Province of Maine" be entered from then on in official records.

To the south and east is the Atlantic Ocean and to the north and northeast is New Brunswick, a province of Canada. The Canadian province of Quebec is to the northwest. Maine is both the northernmost state in New England and the largest, accounting for nearly half the region's entire land area. Maine also has the distinction of being the only state to border just one other state (New Hampshire to the west). Maine is the easternmost state in the United States both in terms of its extreme points and its geographic center. The municipalities of Eastport and Lubec are, respectively, the easternmost city and town in the United States. Estcourt Station is Maine's northernmost point, as well as the northernmost point in New England. (For more information see extreme points of the United States).

Maine's Moosehead Lake is the largest lake wholly in New England, as Lake Champlain is located between Vermont and New York. A number of other Maine lakes, such as South Twin Lake, are described by Thoreau. Mount Katahdin is both the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, which extends to Springer Mountain, Georgia, and the southern terminus of the new International Appalachian Trail which, when complete, will run to Belle Isle, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Maine also has several unique geographical features. Machias Seal Island and North Rock, off its easternmost point, are claimed by both the U.S. and Canada and are within one of four areas between the two countries whose sovereignty is still in dispute, but is the only one of the disputed areas containing land. Also in this easternmost area is the Old Sow, the largest tidal whirlpool in the Western Hemisphere.

Maine is the most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi River. It is called the Pine Tree State; ninety percent of its land is forested. In the forested areas of the interior lie much uninhabited land, some of which does not have formal political organization into local units (a rarity in New England). The Northwest Aroostook, Maine unorganized territory in the northern part of the state, for example, has an area of 2,668square miles (6,910km2) and a population of 27, or one person for every 100square miles (260km2).

Maine is equally well known for its ocean scenery, with almost 3,500miles (5,600km) of shoreline. West Quoddy Head is the easternmost piece of land in the contiguous 48 United States. Along the famous rock-bound coast of Maine are lighthouses, beaches, fishing villages, and thousands of offshore islands, including the Isles of Shoals, which straddle the New Hampshire border. Jagged rocks and cliffs and thousands of bays and inlets add to the rugged beauty of Maine's coast. Just inland, by contrast, are lakes, rivers, forests, and mountains. This visual contrast of forested slopes sweeping down to the sea has been summed up by American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay of Rockland and Camden, Maine in "Renascence":

Bed Bugs in Maine Scourging an Apartment Complex

Another apartment complex, this time in Maine, took a big hit from bed bugs. And the worse part is that those pesky creatures continue to bug the building until this day.

In a report from one news website, that complex plagued by those critters was identified to be the Orchard Park Apartments. Located at Farmingdale, it is under the ownership of Maine Housing Authority and management of C & C Realty Management.

The bugs were first detected in July, said the couple Terry Adams and Shanna Lamoreau, who live in the building. Nonetheless, they said that the management was not doing enough to get rid of the critters, the reason why they are still in the building.

According to Shanna Lamoreau, the inspectors hired to do the elimination came in, looked at the units and said there was no visual sign of the pests. But with a zipped bag of the bed bugs she collected, she said there were surely signs of their presence.

On the part of the complex, housing authority spokesperson Deb Turcotte said that the problem was being resolved. However, she said that some tenants were not cooperating with their efforts.

Bed Bug Showed Up in Biddeford Middle School, My Cleaning Products Suggests a Pesticide-Exempt Bed Bug Spray to Kill …

Portland, ME (PRWEB) February 18, 2014

A bed bug made an appearance at Biddeford Middle School in Maine. And responding to a report about it, My Cleaning Products recommended a pesticide-exempt bed bug spray to help the public kill the pest quick and prevent more it from infesting a place.

News website wgme.com reported on February 07, 2014 that the critter was found on February 06 in the clothing of one of the students. Nevertheless, it shared that the School Superintendent Jeremy Ray said that there is nothing to panic about as bed bugs can be quite common. Moreover, the school said that an outbreak of those critters is unlikely to happen.

Based on the report, the sighting of the pesky insect particularly prompted the school officials to send letters to the parents. Besides just informing them about the problem though, it related that it also gave them some tips about the symptoms of having the crawlies.

Here is a part of the post Bed Bug Sighted in Biddeford Middle School by My Cleaning Products.

It was just one bed bug. Yet, it was enough to spur Biddeford Middle School officials into action.

The lone vampire-like critter was found in the clothing of one of the school's students in February 06, 2014. Following its discovery, a letter was then sent to parents informing them of the problem. Some information about the symptoms, as the bed bug bites, was also added there to help the parents protect their children.

According to My Cleaning Products, a bed bug could hitchhike its way unnoticed into almost any place. It said that it could even start an infestation by itself. And because of that, it stressed that an immediate response is needed when it's sighted.

Particularly, when discovered, MCP said that the bed bug must be killed. A thorough inspection must then follow that up, it said, to make sure that none of it was left.

Nevertheless, to be able to kill bed bugs as soon as they are found, the company cited that a bed bug spray must be prepared. And to make the process effective besides being safe, it stated that the public should get Bed Bug Bully instead of any other spray.
