Washington, DC Surpasses Baltimore to Secure Top Spot on Orkin’s 2020 Bed Bug Cities List – PRNewswire

The list is based on treatment data from the metro areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2018 November 30, 2019. The ranking includes both residential and commercial treatments.

"While bed bugs have not been found to transmit any diseases to humans, they can be an elusive threat to households," said Chelle Hartzer, an Orkin entomologist. "They are excellent hitchhikers, and they reproduce quickly which make it nearly impossible to prevent bed bugs. Sanitation has nothing to do with where you'll find them."

Bed bugs, which are typically 4-5 mm in length and red to dark brown in color, can travel from place to place with ease, including luggage, purses and other belongings. Normally nocturnal, bed bugs will come out of hiding to take blood meals from sleeping or quietly resting humans.

According to the 2018 "Bugs without Borders Survey" by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), the top three places where pest professionals report finding bed bugs are single-family homes (91 percent), apartments/condominiums (89 percent) and hotels/motels (68 percent). With that, hotels spend an average of $6,383 per bed bug incident.

Bed bugs are known for rapid population growth. Females can deposit one to five eggs a day and may lay 200 to 500 eggs in their lifetime. Under normal room temperatures and with an adequate food supply, they can live for more than 300 days, often making treatment challenging.

"The key to preventing a bed bug infestation is early detection," Hartzer said. "When one or more bed bugs enter a space, we call it an introduction. During an introduction, bed bugs probably haven't started reproducing yet, but they could soon. Vigilance is key to stopping bed bugs before infestation levels."

Tell-tale signs of a bed bug introduction could include small black spots indicating bed bug feces or nymph bed bugs in places such as mattress seams, bed frames and furniture. Their small size and ability to hide make them difficult to see during the day, so it's important to look for the black, ink-like stains they can leave behind.

Everything You Need to Know About Bedbugs in New York City

Tiny bloodsucking bedbugs have become an epidemic in New York Cityover the last decade. The little pests have invaded even the cleanest and most expensive apartments inneighborhoods around Manhattan. Here's everything you need to know about bedbugs in NYC.

A bedbug is a wingless, rust-colored insect about the size of an apple seed. Bedbugs are nocturnal parasites, which means they rest during the day and come out to dine on the blood of humans at night.

Bedbugs are attracted by human body heat and the carbon dioxide that we breathe out and typically favor feasting on our shoulders and arms (ewww).

During feeding, the bedbug's proboscis pierces the skin of its victim, injecting bedbug saliva (double ewww); they typically feed for 5 to 10 minutes at a time. As the little critter fills with blood, its coloring changes from light brown to rust-red.

If you're on the lookout, bedbugs typically hide in cracks and crevices. They especially love to live in bedding and on mattresses, where they have easy access to food (that means you). Other living areas favored by bedbugs include:

Aside from those telltale bites (see below), other signs that bedbugs may have moved in include:

Bedbugs are rarely seen in action by their human victims. The first signs of a bedbug infestation are usually bites.

Bedbug bites are generally painless, though itchy and annoying. They tend to start as swollen weals, then fade to red marks and gradually disappear over a few days.

Experts suggest washing bedbug bites with antiseptic soap to avoid infection. The itching can be treated with calamine lotion or anesthetic creams.

Bedbugs often spread by hitching rides on people's clothing or bags. They jump from host to host when people brush up against each other in crowds (yet another reason to keep your distance on the subway).

They also spread through mattresses. Reconditioned mattresses, which are refurbished old mattresses, often spread bedbugs into stores and homes. In addition, bedbugs can spread when old and new mattresses are transported in the same truck.

Experts say bedbugs have been all but dormant for decades. The recent comeback is said to be primarily the result of increased global travel, along with the banning of potent pesticides like DDT.

Getting rid of bedbugs can be tricky, and in most cases, it's necessary to hire a professional. A qualified exterminator can use stronger insecticides to kill the bedbugs. Repeat visits may be necessary to ensure that all bedbugs are eliminated, considering that in proper conditions, adult bedbugs can survive without a meal for a year or longer.

However, these annoying pests can be eliminated.

Here are some do-it-yourself methods you can try in addition to calling the exterminator:

Orkin Releases Top 50 Bed Bug Cities List, Baltimore …

Atlanta and Philadelphia break into top 10

ATLANTA (January 14, 2019) For the third year in a row, Baltimore tops Orkins Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list, released today. New York moved up two spots, while Atlanta and Philadelphia joined the top 10, replacing San Francisco and Dallas, respectively.

Five cities moved into the top 50 this year, including Lansing, Mich., Orlando, Fla., Davenport, Iowa, Ft. Wayne, Ind. and Youngstown, Ohio. Houston dropped nine positions, while Greenville, S.C., rose seven positions, entering the top 20.

The list is based on treatment data from the metro areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2017 November 30, 2018. The ranking includes both residential and commercial treatments.

Bed bugs are the number one urban pest in many cities today, said Chelle Hartzer, an Orkin entomologist. They are master hitchhikers, so no one is immune. Sanitation has nothing to do with prevention: from public transit to five-star resorts, bed bugs have been and can be found everywhere humans are.

Bed bugs are normally nocturnal insects that come out of hiding to take blood meals from sleeping or quietly resting humans. They are always in motion and do not have a regular hiding place. Bed bugs will attach to luggage, purses, backpacks, jackets and other belongings, dropping off almost anywhere to find a new carrier.

According to the 2018 Bugs without Borders Survey by the National Pest Management Association, the top three places where pest professionals report finding bed bugs are single-family homes (91 percent), apartments/condominiums (89 percent) and hotels/motels (68 percent). With that, hotels spend an average of $6,383 per bed bug incident.

A bed bug introduction occurs when one or more bed bugs enter a space. During an introduction, bed bugs probably havent started reproducing yet, but they could soon.

Bed bugs are capable of rapid population growth with an adult female laying two to five eggs per day (up to 500 in her lifetime), often making treatment challenging. Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed and typically reddish brown. Their small size and ability to hide make them difficult to see during the day, so its important to look for the black, ink-like stains they can leave behind.

Bed bugs are an elusive threat to your household and beyond, so its critical to detect and treat for them as early as possible. Anyone who suspects a bed bug infestation should contact a pest management professional immediately.

What causes bed bugs – Answers.com

Bed Bugs do not transmit any diseases, so in this way, no they are not dangerous. People can, however, have allergic reactions to bed bug bites, which causes inflammation, itching and reddened skin. By scratching or irritating a bite, an individual runs the risk of infecting the area with bacteria, which can of course be dangerous. If you are dealing with bed bug bites, here are a few ideas from my blog that may help you. An individual who is bitten by a bed bug will not feel the initial bite, and while not everyone has a reaction to the bites, those who do can experience severe inflammation, redness, and itching. The following are the Top Treatments we have found to be successful. . Do not scratch the bite. . To ease itching, use an anesthetic cream . Calamine lotion can be used to ease itching. . Creams and lotions created for mosquito bites will effectively reduce itching. . When applied directly to the bite, Peppermint oils and extracts will remove the itch. . The use of over-the-counter Benadryl can help to reduce the allergic reaction. . Apply ice on and around the bite to reduce swelling . Wear loose fitting clothing in the areas where bites are apparent. This will reduce the irritation . Should the bite become infected, or symptoms to not begin to diminish, contact your physician immediately. . Have your home/office inspected and treated for bed bugs - while this may seem cliche, the best treatment for bed bug bites is the extermination of the bugs themselves. *** Disclaimer - We at A3 Superior are by no means members of the medical community, nor are any of our staff medical doctors. The information below is not medically researched, it merely lists the practices we have found to be helpful in treating bed bug bites.
