New Bed Bug Survey Shows Problem is Not Waning; Bed Bug …

NPMA Staff

Monday, April 15, 2013

FAIRFAX Va. - The new 2013 Bugs Without Borders Survey conducted by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and the University of Kentucky, found that bed bug infestations in the United States continue at high rates and the pest is as much, if not more of a problem than in years past. The survey of U.S. pest management professionals, found that 99.6 percent of respondents encountered bed bug infestations in the past year and that infestations have increased in the majority of locations in which pest professionals typically treat for bed bugs. The study is being released during Bed Bug Awareness Week (April 22 through 26), a national observance by NPMA and Chases Book of Lists to help spread public awareness about bed bugs and what people can do to help curb infestations.

This is the third survey from NPMA and the University of Kentucky which tracks the bed bug problem since the resurgence of the pest began in earnest about three years ago. The previous survey was conducted in 2011.

According to the survey, bed bugs are overwhelmingly found in private residences including apartments, condominiums and single-family homes and the incidence of infestations in these environments is slightly higher compared to the 2011 findings.

These results clearly show that there is still much work to be done in the fight against bed bugs, said Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for NPMA. As Americans prepare for summer travel, enroll their children in summer camps and college students return home, we hope that these survey findings and Bed Bug Awareness Week observances will remind the public that bed bugs are still very much a problem and that with education and vigilance we can work together to decrease the easy spread of bed bugs.

Below are the top five findings from the 2013 Bugs Without Borders Survey:

1. Nearly all (99.6 percent) pest professionals have treated bed bugs in the past year, slightly higher than the 99 percent that reported the same in 2011.

2. The majority of bed bug infestations occur in residential settings, such as apartments/condominiums and single-family homes, with 98 percent and 96 percent of respondents treating these dwellings respectively. Two years ago, about nine out of ten respondents reported treating infestations in these settings.

Right now, there's only one surefire way to know if you've got bed bugs -- and it itches like crazy. By the time you notice the lines of red, itching, burning bites, the bugs could have been multiplying in your mattress for days or even weeks. But researchers in Canada have a plan to catch the critters early and make it easier to stop an infestation from spreading.

The Country is Crawling with Blood Suckers. Find Out Who's the Worst

A team of biologists and chemists at Simon Fraser University have identified for the first time a chemical scent that will lure bed bugs out of furniture and into traps. They published their research on the attractive pheromones in the chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie.

"The biggest challenge in dealing with bed bugs is to detect the infestation at an early stage," said Gerhard Gries, one of the biologists who has spent years on the project. "This trap will help landlords, tenants, and pest-control professionals determine whether premises have a bed bug problem, so that they can treat it quickly. It will also be useful for monitoring the treatment's effectiveness."

Don't Let These Bloodsuckers Get You!

Bed bugs were largely eradicated ages ago, but in the last decade they have reemerged in plague-like proportions around the world. Cities across the U.S. have seen infestations in homes, hotels, movie theaters and designer stores.

And once you've got bed bugs, they're very hard to get rid of -- but very easy to pass around.

NMSU work may aid bed bug fight Affordable Bedbug Pest …

Bed bugs are very good at smelling out a meal, which is often human blood. The insects smell our perspiration and the carbon dioxide we exhale and come running.

Researchers at New Mexico State University said in a new study that certain chemical compounds interfere with bed bugs sense of smell, offering a potential new weapon for protecting ourselves from the bloodsuckers.

The same compounds also appear to have the added benefit of making it harder for bed bugs to reproduce by hindering the movement of sperm, said Immo Hansen, an associate professor of biology at NMSU.

Most bloodsucking insects find their host by using their sense of smell, said Hansen, the studys lead author. If you can block that, or if you have repellents that cause (bed bugs) to actively avoid a certain area, then you can treat these areas and prevent getting bitten.

The study was published Nov. 20 on PLOS One, a peer-reviewed online publication.

Bed bugs have re-emerged in recent years as a serious and growing problem in the U.S. and around the world, the study said. The insects have also developed resistance to a wide variety of insecticides, calling for new strategies to fight infestations.

HANSEN: Research may help manage bugs

The NMSU scientists performed laboratory experiments with bed bugs using a pair of chemical compounds developed in studies with mosquitoes. They found that the compounds were effective in blocking bed bugs sense of smell, preventing them from congregating around odors they normally find attractive, the study said.
