Seen At 11: Professor Braves Thousands Of Bed Bug Bites In Name Of Research

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) Bed bugs have been frustrating New Yorkers for years, piggybacking on clothes, hitching rides in taxis, and worst of all cozying up in bed at night.

As CBS2s Tracee Carrasco explained, researchers may be on the brink of a breakthrough against the virtually indestructible insects.

Isnt it amazing how this one insect causes this internal panic? entomologist, Ralph Maestre said.

Now, its the bed bugs turn to worry, Maestre said. Thanks to a major scientific breakthrough that could lead to the first ever bed bug trap.

Its going to be a tremendous tool, Maestre said.

A tremendous tool because bed bugs are very difficult to detect and even more difficult to get rid of.

We decided to concentrate on chemical signals, Professor Gerhard Gries, Simon Frazier University, explained.

Professor Gries and his team spent eight years and a whole lot of blood, sweat, and tears to come up with a breakthrough. His wife Regine, a fellow biologist, acted as a guinea pig.

At the peak of the research they were feeding at least 1,000 on this arm, and a thousand on the other arm every week, or sometimes even more, she said.

She endured as many as 180,000 bed bug bites so the team could pinpoint the exact set of chemicals or pheromones that attract bed bugs and lead them to take shelter in one spot.

Bed Bugs – Information for Home Owners & Tenants

Bed bugs can enter homes by latching onto used furniture, luggage and clothing, and by traveling along connecting pipes and wiring. The resources on this page can help home owners, renters, and tenants prevent bed bug infestations and safely control them when they occur.

Right to a bed bug free environment: For tenants in New York, the right to a bedbug-free environment is included in New York City's Housing and Maintenance Code, Subchapter 2, Article 4, which specifically names bedbugs in the list of insects the landlord is legally obligated to eradicate.

The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) lists bedbugs as a Class B violation, which means that they are considered hazardous and that the landlord has 30 days to correct the problem. The landlord must eradicate the infestation and keep the affected units from getting reinfested. Learn more by reading the Metropolitan Council on Housing Fact Sheet on Bed Bugs.

Notice of Bed Bug Infestation History: New York City Administrative Code 27-2018.1, which the Governor signed into law on August 31, 2010, mandates that new residential tenants in New York City be given a one-year bed bug infestation history. All State supervised rental and mutual housing companies in New York City are required to provide new residential tenants with a completed copy of this notice, which is also available on the agency's website. Learn more by visitingthe Metropolitan Council on Housingpage on Bed Bugs.

If a landlord fails to disclose bed bug history: Tenants can use the form DBB-N Tenants Complaint of Owners Failure to Disclose Bed Bug Infestation History/Notice and Order: Tenants have to call 1-866-275-3427 or call/visit one of the borough offices to request a copy of the form; the form will be mailed to the tenants address.

The Best Weapon to Trap and Kill Bed Bugs Is Hidden in Our Blood

Bed bug infestations are a nightmare. The tiny, assholish insects can resist all sorts of measures to kill them completely. Drawn-out infestations are a scourge, but also fairly common in big cities like New York. There are plenty of remedies, from all-natural bean leaves to special heated suitcases, but none are foolproof. One new weapon looks like the most useful tool to fight bed bugs, though. And it uses something found within our blood.

Researchers have identified a chemical blend that lures bed bugs with a 100 percent success rate. The secret ingredient? Histamine, the thing our white blood cells release in an auto-immune response. Histamine is also one of the reasons your skin looks inflamed and irritated after bites from bed bugs, so this is an especially appropriate way to murder those fiendish mattress devils.

Pheromones, the chemicals animals release to communicate, are used to trap all sorts of bugs, including moths, stink bugs, and flies. Scientists have known that bed bugs could be trapped using pheromones for a while now, but they couldn't figure out the final component for a concoction that'd be irresistible to the pests. After 35 experiments, researchers at Simon Fraser team finally found out that histamine was the missing ingredient.

The complete bed bug-killing mix contains dimethyl disulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, (E)-2-hexenal, (E)-2-octenal, and 2-hexanone. These are known as "volatile" components, and they are what attracts bed bugs of all stages of development. The histamine is what makes the bugs stay in the trap.

According to Wired, traps with this new blend are expected to be available in late 2015. While there's always the chance that bed bugs will mutate until they become immune to the immobilizing effects of the histamine, for now, this is a hopeful development in the Great Human War on Bed Bugs. Santacon in New York City is set to get under way this weekend, but no one knows where. Participants were supposed to gather at a park in Bushwick, Brooklyn, but local residents and some businesses objected because of the charity event's reputation for public drunkenness. Some bars that used to welcome Santacon with open arms have had a change of heart and are saying "stay out."
