A fire station in northwestern Alabama has had to be temporarily closed after an infestation of bed bugs sent at least one firefighter for medical treatment.

Florence city officials said in a news release Thursday that Fire Station 2 is undergoing treatment by an exterminator. The bedding will be destroyed.

Fire officials say they were notified of a potential infestation when a firefighter discovered bites on his wrist Monday. No other firefighters were noticeably affected.

Mayor Steve Holt says officials have determined the cause of the infestation and are taking preventive measures to make sure the same thing doesn't happen at any other facility.

Station 2's nine firefighters have been moved to two other stations, along with their trucks and equipment.

Bed bug bites are usually the early warning sign of a bed bug infestation. Bed bugs feed only on blood. Each life stage feeds, except the egg.

Allergic reactions vary widely from practically no reaction to small itchy red or white bumps, to blisters or pustules. Not every person in a residence will react the same way and many times only one person will show signs of bites, leading others to believe it cannot be bed bugs. If you someone you now has bites, consider the following:

If left untreated, bed bug infestations will just get worse. Bed bugs will travel on clothing or personal items, so if you do not treat your home and remove the infestation, you may cause the spread of these annoying bugs.

Adults and all nymphal stages need to take blood meals from warm-blooded hosts, which are typically humans although other mammals and birds can be utilized in the absence of a human host. Female bed bugs lay about five eggs daily throughout their adult lives in a sheltered location (mattress seams, crevices in box springs, spaces under baseboards, etc). Eggs hatch in about 4-12 days into first instar nymphs which must take a blood meal before molting to the next stage. The bugs will undergo five nymphal stages, each one requiring a blood meal before molting to the next stage, with the fifth stage molting into an adult.

Nymphs, resemble smaller versions of adults. Nymphs and adults take about 5-10 minutes to obtain a full blood meal. The adults may take several blood meals over several weeks, assuming a warm-blooded host is available. Mating occurs off the host. Adults live 6-18 months and may survive for long periods of time without feeding.

Bed bugs live with us because they feed on human blood. You are their midnight snack! They need your blood to grow and multiply. Bed bugs can lay lots of eggs that hatch and spread quickly. Bed bugs don't care how clean you keep your house, how much money you have or what foods you eat. All they care about is that you provide a blood meal for them to eat. Anyone can get bed bugs.

The good news is that bed bugs are not known to spread diseases, but their bites can be itchy and red and they make it hard for people to get a good night's sleep

What to look for... How can you know if you have bed bugs since they usually hide during the day and only bite once you've fallen asleep? Here are some signs you can look for: Look for dark, brown, black or rusty spots around their hiding places. Look for bed bug shells or shed skins Look for red, itchy bite marks on skin. However, only about half of the people who are bit by bed bugs react to the bite. So just because you don't have any bites, doesn't mean you don't have bed bugs.

You might find dark spots or shed skins on your mattress, box springs, bedding or behind the headboard. As bed bugs multiply, you may start to find signs of them on other furniture or items in rooms where people sleep. They could be hiding behind the base boards or electrical outlets, in the carpeting and in clutter around the bed or in the corners of the room.

It is important to recognize the signs of a bed bug infestation. The bed bug gets its name from its close association with humans and their beds. Bed bugs were introduced to the US by the early colonists. It was thought after World War II that bed bugs were eradicated in the US. In recent years, the numbers of incidents of people being bitten by bed bugs has increased exponentially in Raleigh, Charlotte, Wilmington and across the country.

Bed bugs are small, oval, wingless insects that reach about 1/4 inch in length. They have flat bodies and are reddish-brown in color. Bed bugs feed by sucking blood from people or animals. They do not develop wings and cannot fly. Fortunately, they are not known to carry any diseases.

Bed bugs are great hitchhikers and are easily transported. Their transmission points are points of high human occupancy like hotels, etc. Because of their flattened bodies, bed bugs hide in small crevices, particularly those associated with mattresses, box springs, bed frames and headboards. In addition, they may be carried as stowaways in luggage, furniture, clothing and boxes when these are moved between hotels, homes and apartments.

Under normal conditions, bed bugs can live for over 300 days. The female bed bug lays up to 5 eggs a day. These eggs are approximately 1 mm long, white and are glued in protected cracks and crevices. A female can lay over 500 eggs in her lifetime.

Usually people do not see bed bugs because the pests hide during the day. At night, bed bugs become active and are attracted to sleeping people and animals.

Bed bugs do not build nests but they do tend to congregate in habitual hiding places.These areas are marked by dark spotting and staining, which is the dried excrement of the bugs. You can also find eggs and eggshells, cast skins of nymphs and even the bugs themselves.

Another likely sign of a bed bug infestation is the presence of rusty or reddish spots of blood on bed sheets, mattresses and walls.

They may also be found along the edge of and under wall-to-wall carpet, behind pictures, switchplates and outlets, in clothing and inside clocks, televisions, phones and smoke detectors.

A sign of being bitten is the presence of small, red, itchy bumps on the skin.
