How to Find an Exterminator to Get Rid of Bed Bugs | eHow

Follow

You can try to treat a bed bug infestation yourself, but odds are you'll need a licensed exterminator to totally eradicate the pests. Bed bugs are one of the most difficult home invaders to exterminate and one of the easiest to spread. They're making a resurgence in cities because of the high number of travelers and because pesticides that were used to control them in the past are now banned. Bed bugs are tough to get rid of, so hire an exterminator with a proven track record -- and several tricks up his sleeve.

Contact licensed exterminators or pest management companies with established track records. They may cost more, but you'll save money in the long run because the job is more likely to be done right.

Ask the exterminator about his experience with bed bugs. Chose an exterminator who has expertise in bed bugs and can offer references and testimonials from satisfied customers. Bed bugs are more difficult to get rid of than other pests.

Ask the exterminator to come to your house and do a walk-through to make sure you're dealing with a bed bug problem. Talk to him about his proposed treatment plan. Get two or three opinions from different companies before you make your choice.

Chose the exterminator who offers the most comprehensive plan to control your problem, not the exterminator who gives you the lowest price. Never believe an exterminator who claims he can get rid of bed bugs with one treatment. It takes weeks or months of close work with a pest control specialist to completely eliminate bed bugs.

Expect to do just as much work as the exterminator. The exterminator will come in and do your inspections and chemical treatments, but you'll e responsible for clean up, regular vacuuming, clutter reduction, bug monitoring and mattress care between visits. If you don't do your share of the work, your exterminator can't be successful.

Have you been searching for how to get rid of bed bugs? Once an afterthought, these pests have made quite the resurgence recently. The more you know about bed bugs, the better your chances of avoiding them.

This pest gets its name from the fact that it is usually found in close proximity to beds. Thats because bed bugs need the blood of warm-blooded animals to survive.

Unfortunately, bed bugs can mature in about 35 days. They then live about seven to 12 months. This makes bed bug removal difficult to do without the help of a professional.

Bed bugs primarily feed on humans sleeping in bed at night. The bite is painless, and the blood meal takes about 10 minutes.

How do bed bugs find hosts while they are asleep? Body heat, the carbon dioxide from exhaled breath and other biological signatures help focus the bed bugs on unsuspecting, snoozing hosts.

The bed bug feeds, then retreats back to its place of harborage for days or even weeks before coming back out. This can make detection difficult until the infestation is well established.

Bed bugs are skilled hitchhikers. In fact, they are primarily transported by humans and human belongings like suitcases.

The smaller the infestation, the easier bed bug extermination is to conduct. Thats why its important to spot any possible infestation as early as possible.

Bed bugs are good at hiding, but not good at hiding evidence. The careless clues they leave are the best indicator your room is overrun with bed bugs. The clues to look for include:

Eaten alive by bed bugs

MOORHEAD, M.N. -- Some Moorhead residents in the Sharp View Apartments aren't too happy with the latest visitors. In the past week residents have found and documented over 10 bed bugs!

One resident told us she had to miss out on her familys Thanksgiving with her 100-year-old mother, because her loved ones didn't want to risk the chance of getting any bugs. Some said they feel a prisoner in their own home and think management isn't doing enough.

"Nobody can sleep, said John Johnson. It's a psychological problem as much as it is a physical problem."

Most fear going to bed to wake up finding red spots from these pesky pests all over their body.

Many are concerned for their health, but afraid to speak against management. The executive director of Moorhead Public Housing Authority said these bugs have been a problem since the beginning of November.

"Since then, we have sprayed the common areas of the building two times, all the common area furniture, every unit in the building, and everything was chemically treated, said Sally Roe, the executive director at Moorhead Public Housing Authority.

Despite the attempts to kill these pests that have out-stayed their welcome, a chemical treatment may not be enough. Fargo Cass Public Health told us these critters have built immunity to the chemicals used since the last scare a few years ago. Now, theyre back in the F-M area. The only way to rid them once and for all is a heat treatment.

"Two apartments of the 47 have been heat treated, said Roe.

The goal: to treat all apartments in the next three months. But, residents said it's not good enough, killing the bugs in one room at a time won't prevent them from spreading.

"The first thing in our lease it says you're entitled to a safe, clean, sanitary place to live and we're not getting that, said Johnson.
