Bed bugs in Grand Forks, North Dakota public housing — Got …

Public housing tenants in a Grand Forks, North Dakota public housing development are suffering from bed bug bites, according to a story in he Grand Forks Herald Saturday.

The article, Bedbugs infest GF apartment complex again, said twelve units were infested in the 76-unit Cherry Heights complex (at 110 Cherry Street), which houses those over 62, the disabled, and people on low incomes.

The word again in the headline referred to the fact that one unit in the building was infested back in March. This suggests that either (a) all bed bugs in the original infestation were not killed and later spread to others, (b) bed bug infestations were present at the time in other units that were not known about, (c) one or more tenants or staff have brought bed bugs in since the March infestation, or (d) all of the above.

The article says,

After the report of bedbugs in March, the affected apartment and surrounding units were treated.

We felt that we did have it under control. We felt we did everything that had to be done, [executive dirctor Terry] Hanson said.

From April to July, the housing authority received no reports of bedbugs. But its not clear whether this is a fresh case or a lingering one, Hanson said.

It is possible that other units besides surrounding ones were infested at the time. Its also not clear how many treatments occurred back in March. Most bed bug infestations take more than one treatment to clear up. Some take many more. If tenants do not react to bites, they may not know if bed bugs are gone. The housing authority should therefore not rely on subsequent reports of bed bugs before following up with further treatment.

The Grand Forks Herald said the building was being treated next week with pesticide spraying by Ecolab, and that tenants in the twelve units being treated would be asked to vacate their homes for two days during treatment.

I can only hope residents have been educated about how to avoid moving bed bugs to the hotels, motels, friends or relatives homes where they might stay during that time.

North Dakota (i /nr dkot/) is a state located in the Midwestern region of the United States of America, along the Canadian border, about halfway between the Pacific Ocean and the Great Lakes. North Dakota is the 19th largest state by area in the U.S. It is also the third least populous, with only about 646,850 residents as of 2009. North Dakota was carved out of the Dakota Territory and admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889, simultaneously with South Dakota.

The state capital is Bismarck and the largest city is Fargo. The primary public universities are located in Grand Forks and Fargo. The U.S. Air Force operates the Air Force Bases, Minot AFB and Grand Forks AFB in North Dakota.

North Dakota has the lowest rate of unemployment in the United States with a rate of only 4.2% in January 2010 and the lowest percentage of non-religious people of any state, and it also has the most churches per capita of any state.

North Dakota is considered to be in the U.S. regions known as the Upper Midwest and the Great Plains, and is sometimes referred to as being the "High Plains". The state shares the Red River of the North with Minnesota on the east; South Dakota is to the south, Montana is to the west, and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba are north. North Dakota sits essentially in the middle of North America, and in fact a stone marker in Rugby, North Dakota, identifies itself as being the "Geographic Center of the North American Continent". With 70,762square miles (183,273km2), North Dakota is the 19th largest state.

The western half of the state consists of the hilly Great Plains, and the northern part of the Badlands to the west of the Missouri River. The state's high point, White Butte at 3,506feet (1,069m), and Theodore Roosevelt National Park are located in the Badlands. The region is abundant in fossil fuels including crude oil and lignite coal. The Missouri River forms Lake Sakakawea, the third largest man-made lake in the United States, behind the Garrison Dam.

The central region of the state is divided into the Drift Prairie and the Missouri Plateau.

The eastern part of the state consists of the flat Red River Valley, the bottom of glacial Lake Agassiz. Its fertile soil, drained by the meandering Red River flowing northward into Lake Winnipeg, supports a large agriculture industry. Devils Lake, the largest natural lake in the state, is also found in the east.

Overall, North Dakota is a very flat state, however, there are some significant hills and buttes in the western half of the state. Most of the state was covered in grassland, forests are not rare or un-heard of however, this is a common misconception. Forests are usually a nuisance to farmers but are not cut down due to the hardships of growing new trees in North Dakota.

North Dakota endures some of the most extreme temperature variations on the planet, characteristic of its continental climate, with cold winters and hot summers: the record low temperature is 60F (51.1C) and the record high temperature is 121F (49C).

How to Kill Bed Bugs – About.com Student Travel

Continued from page 4

It's tough to kill bed bugs on your own; learn some tips on how to avoid and kill bed bugs while traveling, and how to uninvite them permanently if they want to stay for dinner once you get home. Key: think professional exterminators before spending big bucks battling the buggers with sprays. Let's look at some of the bugs' habits before learning about how to kill bed bugs.

And they're tough customers. According to the National Pest Management organization, they can live more than a year without eating; taking a vacation in hopes the bugs will then move out won't work. They can take the temps, too; the bugs are okay with freezing to Fahrenheit 113.

Even if you don't see sign, don't put your backpack on the bed or other furniture in order to lessen chances of the bugs hopping on. If the room has a suitcase stand, use it.

If you've got bites, or you know you've spent time in a room harboring the bugs, vacuum your suitcases, backpack, camera bag -- leave no seam unsucked. Wash everything you own in the hottest water possible to boil the little biters.

Baumann points out that people pay plenty trying various home remedies that don't go so well, and recommends that you bite the bullet and foot the bill for an exterminator to begin with.

The exterminator will have instructions regarding jobs you should complete prior to his arrival.

- Pile up furniture. - Remove light switchplates (the bugs hide back there).

- Toss mattresses. - Caulk wall and wood cracks (they hide there, too) -- get caulk and a caulking gun at a hardware store and practice using a finger to smooth the goop flat against surfaces (easy).

- Completely strip all bedding (get to bare mattress). Craft says to fold bedding in on itself to contain the bugs; wash it or dry clean at high temps. Interesting factoid: Craft says that in hot desert areas, folks with infestations often hang bedding and clothes in the blistering sun -- remember that temps over 113 kill bed bugs.

Bed Bug – Insect and Spider Identification – Details on North …

The body is flat, rusty red color - sometimes purple or even brown (red after feeding). Sizes range from 4mm to 6mm. Antennae are present and appear quite slender and segmented. Short stubby legs compliment the short - almost unseen - stubby wings. Bed Bugs enjoy the warmth and constant food supply that mammal hosts offer. They suck the blood out from their host to achieve adulthood. Bed Bugs can survive without food for up to 12 to 15 months and their bites have not been confirmed as carriers of diseases. Their bites do, however, cause bumps or swelling and people are known to have allergic reactions to these bites.

"Green" Way to Get Rid of Pesky Brown Bugs

It's a "green' way to get rid of some pesky brown bugs.

Pest exterminators in Minot have said that bed bugs are on the rise across North Dakota.

Therma Pure Heat is afairly new technology to the Dakotas.

The patented idea of structural pasteurization uses heat instead of chemicals to kill off bugs and bacteria.

"We're seeing a proliferation of bed bugs now, throughout the United States, some cities have declared emergencies now because of this bed bug problem and if we don't have bedbugs here, we're soon to see them, and so this is a very valuable technology, CDC has spoken very highly about use of Heat now to kill these insects, rather than waiting often weeks with chemicals, the technology can be used in a day." says David Hedman/Therma Pure Heat President/CEO.

He says the Therma Pure Heat product can also be used in flooded structures to dry out the home and kill any mold.
