Bed Bugs Ohio: Resident Resources and Tips

"Information on Bed bugs Ohio infestations is available from many sources including the Ohio State University Cooperative Extension and local government health departments. Four Ohio cities are on the list of most infested cities in the U.S. (Cincinnati #4, Columbus #7, Dayton #8, Cleveland #14), making Ohio the #1 state for bed bug problems. Unfortunately, bedbuginfestations are occurring across the State including outbreaks in Toledo,Columbus and Cincinnati. Read local bed bug news, tips on killing bed bugs and find local government resources below."

Consistent with the overall trend of increase bed bug infestations, an apartment house in Columbus was featured in a 10TV news story on the infestation. According to Dana Rose, code enforcement officer in Columbus, and the Columbus Dispatch, indicated that bed bug infestation reports are coming in "2 to 3x a week from all over the city."

With government funding shortfalls in Cincinnati, proactive inspections have ended with government focusing on lower cost education efforts. Cincinnati.com reported that there are approximately 12 bed bug infestation cases reported in Northern Kentucky per week (2009). Cincinnati State Representatives are calling for government assistance with the problem (2009). The Ohio State University extension recommends marking any discarded furniture that was thrown out due to bedbugs and to inspect hotel rooms before entering to determine if bed bugs are present, before bringing in luggage. Time Magazine has reported that the bedbug Cincinnati problems are so bad that some apartment tenants would rather sleep on the streets.

An article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer further confirms the Bed Bugs Ohio problem. A newspaper article on the bedbug problem quotes a representative from Orkin Pest Control who claims that in North Olmsted over the past 3 years (2007-2009), they've seen a +20% increase in bed bug related calls year to year.

If you want to have a bed bug identified without a bed bugs Ohio exterminator, you can also contact your local Ohio Cooperative Extension office.

If you decide to treat the problem yourself, consider buying a bed bug removal kit. You can buy one that is an organic bed bug kit, or an insecticide based bed bug kit. The kits provide all of the products mentioned below and are an economical way to approach the problem. Getting rid of bed bugs is hard work, and having the right products available will help.

Step 1:Clean and Steam Remove and wash in hot water any items such as clothing and bed linens. Once clean, place in a sealed plastic bag. A good choice are Ziploc Big Bags since they are bed bug proof. Vacuum any bed bugs that you can spot and then dispose of the vacuum bag in a sealed plastic bag. Use a crevice tool around the perimeter of the room, and along all mattress and box spring seams.

Other helpful steps include vacuuming (use crevice tool for baseboards, mattress, box spring etc). and the use of a hand held steamer.

Steam heat exceeds the required 113F needed to kill bed bugs and bed bug eggs. You can steam all surfaces (make sure you aren't staining furniture by testing first), which is a safe, chemical free way to treat bedbugs. Consider steaming items such as the mattress, box spring, bed frame, headboard etc before using bedbug spray products.

Step 2: Spray Two types of bedbug sprays are needed to effectively remove bedbugs from the home. The first a knock down spray, kills bed bugs and bed bug eggs on contact. Our recommended products are Sterifab (pump spray that shows no bed bug resistance), Bedlam (aerosol that shows no resistance) and if your prefer an organic spray, use Bed Bug Patrol.

Bed Bug Precautions

Along with fires, the Lima Fire Department is battling another growing threat in the state, bed bugs.

According to the Ohio Department of Health, the blood sucking insects were once thought to be eradicated from the United States, but they are making a comeback and have affected every city in Ohio. While bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, they do bite and may cause allergic reactions. Fire fighters are finding the bugs more and more often on EMS calls. Some Cincinnati Fire Stations have been hit hard, so Lima's department is being proactive.

An infestation of bed bugs can be expensive and hard to control. Getting rid of them requires professional help, so firefighters are doing things such as wearing booties over their shoes during runs and getting new chairs for the lobby that are easier to clean.

According to a study from the pest control company Orkin, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton all rank in the top U.S. cities from bed bug treatments last year.

It might be the Second City but Chicago is No. 1… in bed bugs

Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Although it would probably rather be known for having the countrys tallest building or the nations best pizza, Chicago has instead locked down its spot as the No. 1 city for bed bugs for the second straight year.

Pest control company Orkin gave the Windy City top billing on its 2013 Bed Bug Cities List, an honor which Chicago was unlucky enough to win in 2012.

The problem in Chicago has become such an issue that City Council passed an ordinance in July 2013 requiring condo associations to formally draft bed bug management plans.

The City of Chicago is committed to making sure residents have the best information to protect themselves from bed bugs. Most experts agree that public education and awareness are the best defenses against bed bugs, reads to the citys website.

Bed bugs can be found almost anywhere, from apartment buildings to four star hotel rooms. Recently, they have become more problematic," the city's website continues. "Possible reasons include modern bed bugs resistance to pesticides, increased travel, global warming, and lack of public awareness. Most likely its a combination of all of these and others.

According to Orkin, the list ranks the cities by the number of bed bug treatments Orkin performed from January to December 2013, along with any shift in ranking compared to January to December 2012.

Rounding out the top 10 are Los Angeles, Columbus (Ohio), Detroit, Cincinnati, Cleveland/Akron/Canton, Dayton, Washington D.C., Denver and Indianapolis.

While studies show that bed bugs do not spread disease, the physical and mental health consequences are well documented and of serious public concern, said Orkin entomologist and technical services director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. Once bed bugs are inside your home or business, they can reproduce quickly and can travel from place to place in personal belongings and even on people. They can also move from place to place on their own, independently of objects.

Residents of Nashville and Charlotte shouldnt be all that happy, as their cities shot up the list 17 and 18 spots respectively.

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Another bed bug has found at theCuyahoga County Justice Center and that has led to alarm among court employees.

The county held special meetings for court employees Monday, telling them what to watch for, and what to do when they spot a bed bug.

And now the court is ending out information to 500 court employees about bed bugs.

The bug found Monday was in a courtroom. Another found recently was on an administrative floor.

Ajustice center spokesperson released the following statement to the media:

The Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court is aware that bed bugs have been found in the Justice Center.

The areas in question have been treated and workers were advised of the discovery and provided with instruction on the prevention and treatment of bed bugs. An additional meeting with bed bug experts was held Monday afternoon for any interested Court employees.

Unfortunately, no office is totally safe from the potential for bed bugs or any other pests. According to the Cleveland Department of Public Health, public health officials and pest control operators in northeast Ohio and across the country are responding to a significant increase in bed bug complaints.

Bed bugs are found in office buildings, retail stores, hospitals, dormitories, nursing homes, libraries, movie theaters, buses, or any other place where people gather. With tens of thousands of people coming through the Justice Center every week, we are not immune.
