Have you ever seen a bed bug?

Bed bugs are insects that feed on human blood and have lived with people for thousands of years. References to bed bugs are present in literature from as far back as 400 B.C. and were a common part of life in Europe by the 1600s.

These insects were once thought to be eradicated from the United States, but they are making a comeback and have affected every major city in Ohio. In the past four years, significant increases in bed bug reports to local health departments highlight the need for education and effective action against infestations.

So why have bed bugs returned? Although the bugs were nearly wiped out in the United States in the 1950s, other parts of the world did not see a similar decline. Changing pesticide use in combination with international travel and commerce left an opening for bed bugs to again take hold in the United States. Pesticide resistance contributes to the challenge of controlling this pest. While bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, they do bite and may cause allergic reactions. An infestation of bed bugs may be very costly and difficult to control and usually requires professional pest control help.

Bedbugs’ toll is financial, physical, emotional

By Jim Weiker

The Columbus Dispatch Thursday October 11, 2012 9:36 AM

This is a story that no one wanted to be part of. A story of exhaustion, expense and embarrassment.

A story of bedbugs.

The story includes Eric Hurd waking up in his North Side home to find the bugs crawling on him before pulling back the mattress cover and finding hundreds of the insects.

It includes Todd Perry becoming so covered in bedbug welts that he had to wear makeup to work to avoid alarming others. It includes Rosemarie Mitchell having to postpone back surgery twice, once after the hospital learned that her home had bedbugs and a second time because of infections from the welts.

It includes Rod Bodwalk painting the floors of his East Side apartment beige so he could better spot the bugs crossing the floor.

And it includes Mary Elizabeth Courtney sticking dozens of bugs to a piece of tape in an effort to convince her landlord that she still had a problem after fighting the relentless pests for eight months.

As members of the Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force prepare for a public forum on the bugs this afternoon, the human toll can only be described as, in Courtneys words, a nightmare. Bedbugs can consume lives; cost thousands of dollars; require months of labor; and, long after theyre gone, exact psychological damage.

This infestation affected all areas of our lives, said Mitchell, who spent eight months ridding her East-moor home of the vermin.

Community Forum On Bed Bugs Set For Thursday

CENTRAL OHIO --

It's hard to go anywhere in Central Ohio and not hear about bed bugs.

Families living in infested apartment complexes battle with landlords to get pest control to exterminate.

"We have to sleep with long sweat pants, pull the socks over our pants, tuck our sweatshirts in and that allows a little bit of comfort. But they still get your hands and your face," said Bill Clegg.

Even nursing homes are dealing with the problem. NBC4 investigated an infestation at a facility in Circleville. Even hotels are not immune to the problem.

"He told me he could put me in another room. And I explained to him this was an infestation. That it's not just one, they're not dead, they're everywhere," said Crystal after a stay at a north side hotel.

Over the past six years, bed bugs have invaded Central Ohio. Terminix and Orkin rank Columbus in the top ten of most infested bed bug cities in America. Health experts say the best way to fight them is through education.

On Thursday, the Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force is holding a community forum during it's annual summit.

"We had not targeted the general public for awareness and education. We thought this would be a good opportunity," said Paul Wenning who heads the task force.

Experts will be on hand to educate the public on what to do if you do get bed bugs. Here's list of other topics up for discussion:

Forum looks to take bite out of bedbugs

By GARY SEMAN JR.

ThisWeek Community News Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:23 AM

The bad news: Bedbugs are easy to transport, hard to spot, difficult to kill and love human company.

The good news is there's help.

The Central Ohio Bed Bug Task Force will host a public forum on the pests from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at Vineyard Christian Fellowship Church, 3005 Holt Road, Grove City.

Experts will offer tips on how to identify and inspect for bedbugs and how to get rid of them.

The forum is free and open to the public, but registration is strongly recommended. To register, visit centralohiobedbugs.org.

Paul Wenning, who leads the task force, said there are common misperceptions about treatment, some of which can be ineffective or even dangerous.

"Treatment has to be done by a professional," he said.

Bug bombs or fogging simply do not work, he said, and tend to scatter the bugs to other rooms. Rubbing down surfaces with alcohol will do little to help, he said.
