Bed Bug – Oklahoma State UniversityStillwater

Bed Bug, Cimex lectularius Habitat: The common bed bug, is a bloodsucking parasite of man. They tend not to live on humans and their only contact is for the blood meal. Most blood feeding occurs at night, and they generally seek shelter during the day and become inactive while digesting the blood meal. Bed bugs shelter in a variety of dark locations, mostly close to where people sleep. These include under mattresses, floorboards, carpets, behind paintings, skirting, in various cracks and crevices of walls, within bed frames and other furniture, and behind loose wallpaper. Bed bugs tend to stay in close contact with each other and heavy infestations are accompanied by a distinctive sweet sickly smell. Blood spotting on mattresses and nearby furnishings is often a tell tale sign of an infestation. The bugs apparently locate the host by detecting warmth and carbon dioxide. The bite itself is said to be painless, however the deposition of saliva on the abraded epidermis results in localized wheals or hives. Reactions to the bites may be delayed up to 9 days before lesions appear. Common areas of the body that are affected involve the arms and shoulders. Life Cycle: Cimex feeds by piercing the host with its mouthparts (hollow tubes). Saliva injected at the time of feeding is associated with local and sometimes widespread hives. There are five juvenile stages known as nymphs, which are miniature versions of the adults in appearance. Each nymphal stage requires at least one blood meal to molt to the next stage and it takes 5-10 minutes for complete engorgement to occur. The entire nymphal development takes 6-8 weeks, while the adult bed bugs can live on average for 6-12 months. There may be several generations per year. All nymphal stages and adults of both sexes require blood for nutrition and development. After mating, each female lays 2-3 eggs a day throughout her lifespan. The cream colored eggs (1mm in length) are cemented on rough surfaces of hiding places, and will hatch around 10 days at room temperature. Description: Adult bed bugs are about 1/4 inch long and reddish brown, with oval, flattened bodies. The immatures (nymphs) resemble the adults, but are smaller and somewhat lighter in color. Control: Generally these pests have become less important over the last 50 years with overall improvements in household and personal cleanliness, and with the use of effective insecticides. Resistance to insecticides has been seen and varies by region. Control is achieved by thoroughly cleaning bed cloths, mattresses, and pillows. Insecticide is then used to treat the bed frame, springs, slats, and nearby crevices around doors, windows, and baseboards. Please contact your local county extension office for current information. Help On The Way For Elderly Woman After Apartment Is Bed Bug Infested

OKLAHOMA CITY -

An 80-year-old Oklahoma City woman with a bad bed bug problem in her apartment has gotten relief from complete strangers.

Nancy Nussle has lived at Isola Bella Apartments for five years. Last year, her complex sprayed her apartment for free for bed bugs. She says that problem caused her to get rid of all of her furniture except for a modest cot that she's been sleeping on.

The bed bugs returned recently. Bites on Nancy's arms and legs were visible when News 9 met with her Thursday.

Nussle was heartbroken because she says her landlord wanted her to pay the $400 it would cost to spray for bed bugs the second time. Nussle lives on social security, and said there was no way she could pay it. Her landlord told us she could pay off the balance in installments.

After our initial story aired Thursday night, we got several calls from area exterminator companies, and from people in the community, who wanted to help the 80-year-old woman.

"You keep thinking you can't get any lower, and then something great happens," said Nussle. "I'm looking forward to life now."

On Friday, the spraying got done for Nussle and free of charge. Also, Nancy received some monetary support, as well as a new bed and a new couch from strangers.

Elderly Woman Says Her Apartment Is Infested With Bed Bugs

OKLAHOMA CITY -

An 80-year-old Oklahoma City woman called News 9 Thursday, because she says her landlord isn't fulfilling their obligation.

Nancy Nussle's Isola Bella Apartment became infested with bed bugs last year. Isola Bella paid an exterminator to fix the problem, but Nussle says the bed bugs returned recently and says the complex now says she has to pay $400 to fix the problem.

"I just can't deal with it anymore," she sobbed Thursday afternoon inside her apartment.

Bed bug bites were visible on both of Nussle's forearms and her lower legs.

Isola Bella Manager Melissa Wheeler says the bed bugs returned to Nussle's apartment, because her used furniture attracted them.

"We're not heartless," she said.

Wheeler says she pledges to work with Nussle, knowing she is elderly and is living on a fixed income.

"We help everybody," she said.

City County Health Administrator Troy Skow told News 9, "The tenant can be at fault, but the owners are responsible ultimately for the control of insects and rodent control. Bed bug extermination can be very expensive, and many managers have begun putting into their lease agreements that the tenants will be charged for repeat problems."

Bed Bug Infestation Forces OKC Woman Out Of Pine Ridge Apartments

Oklahoma City, OK -

A bed bug infestation forces an Oklahoma City woman out of her apartment.

Karen Bookout has lived at Pine Ridge Apartments on S.W. 63rd and Santa Fe for nearly a year.

"It's not my fault, you know, I didn't bring these bed bugs in here," Bookout said the bed bugs moved in last month.

Bookout said she complained to management, but they claimed it was her fault.

"She said where did they come from, and I said I don't know you tell me," Bookout recalled.

Soon after the complaint, management issued a pest control notice asking some tenants to bag their belongings for an exterminator.

Bookout said she tried to comply but was never given a date for when her apartment would be sprayed.

An eviction notice came next.
