Bed bugs, non-working washing machines and dryers, and security concerns were among the complaints voiced before the Albuquerque Housing Authority Board of Commissioners on Wednesday by a group of residents living in Embudo Towers.

The two four-story towers, on Constitution between Pennsylvania and Wyoming, contain 101 public housing units for the elderly and disabled. Each floor in each wing shares a communal laundry room. About 20 residents, some with canes and oxygen tanks, attended the housing authority meeting.

Not only are there bed bugs, but people cant wash their clothing and linens because the washing machines and dryers dont work, and even when they do, they dont get hot enough to kill the bed bugs, said resident Jerry Lujan, who organized the group.

Lujan said residents have been complaining about the bed bugs for at least three months. Further, some washing machines that were broken into by crowbar-wielding burglars have not been repaired for five months; locks on doors into the complex have been inoperable for more than three years; and the parking lot is poorly lit, creating a dangerous situation for residents who venture out after dark.

Residents, Lujan said, are contemplating a class-action lawsuit or a renters strike.

Linda Bridge, executive director of the AHA, said the agency is aware of the problems at Embudo Towers and has already begun to address them with a systematic, floor-by-floor spraying of each unit. The process should take about six weeks.

The bed bugs, she said, were likely carried into the complex by residents bringing in used or discarded mattresses or furniture. When the small, wingless insects make their way into clothing, residents put them through the on-site washing machines and dryers, which do not get hot enough to kill them. Many are dislodged in the machines and wind up entangled in the clothing of the next users laundry, she said.

In an attempt to stop the spread of the infestation, some laundry rooms were intentionally shut down and residents were instructed to wash their clothing in large commercial machines at laundromats.

Public housing residents tell of bed bugs, security concerns

Locally, Denver County Department of Environmental Health says it's the number one complaint it gets although it hasn't seen an increase in the overall number of complaints about bed bugs this year.

But these bugs aren't just a bed problem. They are traveling more and in some cases, even going all the way to the movie theater.

Just this month, a confirmed invasion at an AMC movie theater in New York's Times Square caused health officials to shut it down. A moviegoer was bitten by one or more bed bugs while she was in her seat.

The viewer, Kathryn Prior, said, "I was watching the movie and all of a sudden my whole arm got itchy. And I started scratching and these huge bumps and red welts appeared."

Bed bugs were spotted in that same theater just two weeks earlier and at other locations in upper Manhattan. AMC is taking this threat seriously and doing what it can to rid its theaters of these bugs.

In an e-mail response to NBC, the company said: "We will continue to vigorously inspect our theaters and instantly treat any bed bug detections."

In Connecticut, bed bugs climbed the pole inside a firehouse; in Pennsylvania, an infestation occurred inside a classroom, and last year in Colorado bed bugs were found in a library. Other recent examples include outbreaks in a New York Victoria's Secret store and at an Abercrombie and Fitch.

This is most likely happening because bed bugs are multiplying and getting carried in to these establishments by unsuspecting customers.

"Many of them ride so that you deposit them in a department store, you deposit them in a movie theater, in a play house, etc. So they are pretty mobile with you," Dr. Philip Tierno from NYU's Langone Medical Center said.

Bed bugs are tiny insects that feed off human blood. They are big enough to see with your naked eye, but you have to look closely enough to spot them. They usually hide out during the day and feed at night. That's why most bites happen in bed while you are sleeping.

Pennsylvania bed bugs are becoming an increasing problem all across the US. For many people these pests were largely unknown until reports were on the news of major hotels and other establishments having problems. Bed bugs are no longer limited to large cities or dirty buildings. They can infect anywhere and anyone. More and more, people are reporting problems with bed bugs in Pennsylvania.

It is nearly impossible to know specifically how bed bugs get into a place. They can be on clothing, animals or other fabrics. Once bed bugs in PA arrive, they intend to stay. This creates an unpleasant home for people, because bed bugs like to feed on people while sleeping.

The tell-tale mark of a bed bug is a series of 3-4 bites in a straight line. Sometimes referred to as breakfast, lunch and dinner, these marks look nondescript. They are often mistaken for other marks. Perhaps they are mosquito or spider bites, or maybe it is just a few pimples in a weird place. Because bed bugs do not hurt when they bite and the mark does not originate for several days, it can be difficult to identify. Just as difficult as it is to know where they come from or if bed bugs are present, it is nigh impossible to eliminate them.

Bed bugs are persistent and hardy pests. Some advocate chemicals, but the most reliable way to exterminate them is by using heat. Bed bugs cannot live at high temperatures. Specifically, they cannot survive above 120 F. This may sound easy, and putting articles of clothing in the dryer is simple enough. However, getting everything in a room above 120 F can prove to be a major challenge. Heaters are not made to heat a room that high, and the mattress will not fit in a dryer. When dealing with an infestation, it is best to look to a professional bed bug exterminator.

Call someone who has eliminated many Pennsylvania bed bugs. Professional bed bug extermination companies often have trucks with heaters designed to heat rooms above 120 F. Using flexible ducting to direct this to the infested area, trained service personnel can quickly remove any bed bugs. All members of the bed bug family feed on the blood of birds or mammals. The bed bug, Cimex lectularius, attacks man, as does the Eastern bat bed bug, Cimex adjunctus. Other species exist that attack bats, pigeons, and rodents. Bed bugs are active only at night, usually just before dawn. During the day, they hide in cracks and crevices in walls, floors, beds, and furniture. When only a few bed bugs are present, they live close to human sleeping areas; when numerous, they can be found in many rooms of the house. A characteristic bed bug odor is frequently present in a home infested with bed bugs.

Bed bugs are oval, chestnut-brown insects and are flattened from top to bottom. Adult bed bugs (Fig. 1) measure about inch in length. The mouthparts are shaped into an elongated proboscis, which, when not in use, is held directed backward underneath the body. When a bug is ready to feed, the proboscis is extended forward and the stylets within are thrust into the skin of a host. Mated female bed bugs deposit their eggs in their resting places. One female will produce about 345 eggs during her lifespan.

Bed bugs grow by molting several times. Nymphs look very much like the adults, except they are smaller and not sexually mature. There are five nymphal molts, and each nymph must have a blood meal to be able to molt to the next stage. Adults feed once a week on average but feed many times during their four-month or longer lifespan.

Bed bugs often come into a home via secondhand articles and furniture. They may also migrate between homes via wires, plumbing, or rain gutters. In addition, since warehouses, trucks, and railroad cars may be infested, common bed bugs can infest homes by stowing away on new furniture stored or shipped from these places.

The Eastern bat bed bug comes into homes in the spring with colonies of bats. They can be found in the living quarters of homes in many of the same places as common bed bugs, but the source of the infestation is located within walls or attic areas.
