5. Re: Bed Bugs?!?!

I recently had a termite treatment and the exterminator told me when he checks into a hotel, he pulls the mattress away from the headboard and looks, then pulls the bedding away from the mattress and looks before he puts a single piece of their luggage in the room. He tells me while they're small, they aren't so small that you can't see them if you look carefully.

I asked and he has found bedbugs in only one hotel - and he checked out because he said where there are bedbugs in one room, you will often find them in another. I've always taken the attitude that it is what it is and I'ld take my chances, but he told me if you get bedbugs at home, you will have to do the worst spring cleaning you've ever had before exterminators will treat your home because they are extremely different to get rid of. So I have reluctantly decided it is worth our vigilence and will begin doing the check. I didn't know there was such a thing as a Bed Bug Registry, so thanks to Kaylee C.

My husband and I took a weekend get-away trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and stayed at the Holiday Sands North. Woke up Sunday morning to several bites from a bed bug. Huge welt and all..found bed bug in pillowcase. Reported to Thomas, the general manager and brought the bed bug in a cup so manager could see. Thomas admitted it was a bed bug, but refused to refund our stay, however, he called his maintenance crew to strip room, headboards, etc., and told us to call back regarding refund ... read full report

I visited this past week and both my father and husband broke out all over their arms, backs and shoulders with what appears to be bed bug bites.

Bed bugs are very small, the adults growing to 45 mm in length and 1.53 mm wide. They are round or oval-shaped and typically reddish-brown or light brown. The bugs are named after their typical habitat of human homes, specifically near beds or anywhere else in a home that humans regularly sleep. As nocturnal insects, they wait for the humans to fall asleep and then actively search for their meal, mostly between the hours of 2 AM and 5 AM. These crafty little creatures take great caution in trying to stay hidden in a warm crevice. One common place to find them is in the creases of your mattress or any cracks in your headboard. Look in between mattresses, inspect box springs for holes to ensure they have not created a home inside it, and check the nooks and crannies where the wall and carpet meets. Bed bugs may also settle into your luggage or near a pets typical resting spot. Youll also want to check couches and pull out beds; anywhere someone may have slept could hold a bed bug colony. Other signs of bed bugs to be on the lookout for include bed bug feces, eggs, or blood stains on sheets from feeding.

After finding where all of the bed bugs are, the next step is to get rid of them. Anything that can be washed should be washed in very hot water, at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and soap. This includes sheets, blankets, pet bedding, clothing, couch cushions if possible, etc. Put everything that was washed through the dryer to treat it one more time with high heat. Also, steam clean your carpets and other furniture with very hot water.
