Concern over reported bedbug situation at West Side CTC – wnep.com

Pictures were given to Newswatch 16 by students at West Side CTC in Pringle. They say the photos prove that the school has a serious bedbug problem.

PRINGLE, Pa. Some parents and students in Luzerne county believe bedbugs have been found throughout West Side Career and Technology Center.

Students say they have been finding what they believe are bedbugs in hallways, classrooms, and even inside books for more than a year.

"People are seeing bedbugs squashed with blood in it, so that means they're biting people," said student Chelsea German-Spencer.

"If they come home with the bedbugs, it's going to costs thousands of dollars to get rid of them, first of all, and then you have to buy all new furniture. A lot of parents are upset with this. They kept their kids home over it. I even kept my daughter home because I don't want bedbugs. I make her strip at my door," said parent Pamela German.

Steven Dorshefski says the bug problem at West Side CTC caused him to leave the school and go to Wyoming Valley West instead. He says his sister also went to West Side CTC and brought home bedbugs that cost his family $1,300 to get rid of.

"Because they never properly take care of this issue. My sister graduated two years ago, and when she first started, there they were there, and they've been there years and years," Dorshefski said.

The school sent out a letter to parents saying each time a sighting is reported, the room is evacuated, and a pest management contractor is brought in to inspect and treat the room if necessary.

"I feel that they should, like, properly treat the whole school. Treating one room is not going to get rid of the bedbugs. You have to treat the whole entire infected area," German said.

The letter also states that more than 700 people come in and out of the school each day, and it's nearly impossible to find the source of the problem. Still, students say something needs to be done.

"If they're not taking drastic measures, then I don't feel safe. That's supposed to be a safe place where I am supposed to learn and where I am supposed to grow and communicate and get a job and everything," German-Spencer said.

Newswatch 16 reached out to the administrative director at West Side CTC in Pringle, but he was not available to speak with us.

Diatomaceous Earth: Natural Bed Bug Control

Bed bugs live in warm locations and often make their homes in bedding, clothes, carpets, and furniture. You, their constant supply of food, are why bed bugs enjoy these locations. To check for them, look over mattress and furniture seams and the surrounding areas for black fecal matter and blood smears.

Diatomaceous earth is an effective bed bug powder. It's also cheap and free of harmful chemicals. It's easy to apply around your home and safe to apply near food, pets, and children.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) kills bed bugs by absorbing the oily, protective layer that covers their exoskeletons. Without this protective coating, bed bugs will dehydrate and die within a few hours.

Effective natural bed bug treatment comes down to six simple steps:

Before beginning, bug proof your home by sealing up any places bed bugs could enter, such as cracks or crevices. The chances of re-infestation are much lower if you do this first.

Bed bugs cannot survive in temperatures above 130 degrees fahrenheit for more than a few hours. Steam clean your linens and furniture thoroughly with a steam cleaner to increase the temperature.

Put all fabrics through the wash on very high or very cold temperatures. Dry on a high heat and store all washed fabrics in sealed plastic bags or containers.

Vacuum your carpets thoroughly. If possible, also use a carpet cleaner to remove any bed bugs from the carpeting.

Dismantle furniture as much as possible and vacuum every surface, paying particular attention to your furniture's seams and frames. Get tight spots with your vacuum's hose attachment. After vacuuming, you may reassemble your furniture. Consider using a total encasement mattress cover on your bed.

Diatomaceous earth works as both a tool for prevention and treatment. Apply DE by following these steps:

We recommend leaving the diatomaceous earth applied as long as possible. Although it's far from a fashion statement, keeping a constant barrier down against bed bugs will help ensure your victory. Even though DE can kill a bed bug in a few hours, it might take a long time for all the bed bugs to be exposed, and DE only affects adult bed bugs, so you have to leave it applied long enough for the bed bug eggs to hatch.

After a couple weeks, you can wipe it all off and vacuum it up. A word of warning here: diatomaceous earth is very hard on traditional filtered vacuums. Unless you're only cleaning a small section, we recommend using a shop vac to avoid burning out your vacuum's motor. For more information on cleaning up diatomaceous earth after you've applied it, check out our DE clean-up article here.

If the bed bugs persist, don't lose hope. Repeat the steam cleaning, vacuuming, washing, and applying diatomaceous earth until the problem subsides.

Follow these steps in every part of your home. Repeating these steps is necessary to break the cycle of infestation. If you continue to use diatomaceous earth in your home, it will help prevent future infestations.

This is one superlative no one wants their city to win. Pest control company Orkin recently released its Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list, compiled with data of the places where Orkin performed the most treatments for bed bugs from December 2018 through November 2019. The reality is that bed bugs have shown up in cities and towns all across America, from mansions to cramped apartments. Theyve been increasing in number in the United States since the turn of the century due to increased travel and limitations on certain insecticides, but numbers have been especially high in these cities. Theres not too much you can do to stop them; early detection is critical because there is no foolproof way to keep them out of your home. Here are the warning signs youre about to have a bed bug problem.

Taking first place on the listand stealing the not-so-coveted top spot from Baltimore which held it for three years in a rowwas Washington, D.C. (Baltimore still placed second.) Clearly, bed bugs love the Chesapeake Bay area. These two cities were followed, in order, by Chicago; Los Angeles; and Columbus, Ohio, which all retained their spots from last year to round out the top (bottom?) five.

Cities six through ten were New York; Detroit; Cincinnati; Indianapolis; and Atlanta. Indianapolis, at spot nine in 2020, jumped a whoppingfive spotsfrom last year. Indianas capital, new to the top ten, moved Philadelphia out of the leading cities (though it only dropped to number 12). No matter where you are, beds arent the only places youll find these peststhis is how to find (and get rid of) bed bugs in your car.

So if you live in or are visiting any of these cities, its wise to be a little more vigilant about your susceptibility to bed bugs and maybe stock up on a bed bug killer like this. According to the CDC, bed bugs often come into contact with people by way of luggage, bags, clothes, bedding, furniture, or anywhere they can easily hide and hitch a ride. Always inspect hotel rooms or any place you might be stayingheres a guide to how to do so properly. Now, make sure you know these16 secrets for getting rid of bed bugs.

Indianapolis jumped 5 spots on list of worst cities for bed bugs. Here’s how to prevent them. – IndyStar

Indianapolis has jumped five spots on a top 50list it doesn't want to be on.

Orkins 2020 Bed Bug Cities List puts Indianapolis at No. 9for bed bugs. Last year the city was ranked at No.14.

The list is based on data from metro areas where Orkin performed bed bug treatments between Dec. 1, 2018, and Nov. 30, 2019. Itincludes residential and commercial treatments.

If you're feeling itchy, just remember that it could be worse:Washington, D.C., took the No. 1 spot, dethroning Baltimore after three consecutive years at the top of the list.

Flint, Michigan, saw the biggest jump in rank, moving up 16 spots to 31.Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Toledo, Ohio, joined the top 50 list for the first time.

Here are the top 10 cities for bed bugs:

Bed bugs, which are typically 4-5 mm in length and red to dark brown in color, can travel from place to place with ease, including luggage, purses and other belongings, according to Orkin. The nocturnal bugs will come out of hiding to take "blood meals" from sleeping orresting humans.

Telltale signs of bed bugs could include small black spots indicating bed bug feces or nymph bed bugs in places such as mattress seams, bed frames and furniture, Orkin says.

Orkin suggests the following tips to prevent an infestation:
