Readers sound off on U.S. support for Israel, bed bugs and a Black … – New York Daily News

We pay lip service to suffering that we finance

Los Altos, Calif.: It is essential to address the ongoing violence in Israel and its root causes. The violence that has erupted between Hamas and Israel, resulting in the loss of innocent lives, highlights the urgent need for a paradigm shift in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It has been fueled by decades of unconditional U.S. support in terms of money and weapons, which has led to seething Palestinian resentment of apartheid policies and brutal occupation. The culmination is the current dire situation, with Gaza under siege and the continued oppression of the Palestinian people.

Historian Rashid Khalidi aptly describes the situation as Palestinians living under incredible oppression. The blockade of Gaza has been a pressure cooker. It was only a matter of time before it erupted. The recent pledge of more military aid and munitions to Israel, coupled with the movement of U.S. warships towards the region, is a deeply troubling response. Sending more arms to Israel will only add fuel to an already raging inferno. Instead, the U.S. should prioritize defusing the situation and seeking a just and lasting peace.

The outpouring of support for Palestinians across the Middle East underscores the fact that the Palestinian cause remains a deeply felt rallying cry in the region. Diplomatic normalization agreements between Israel and Arab governments, such as the Abraham Accords, will do little to change this reality. As long as the conflict remains unresolved, stability in the Middle East will remain elusive.

It is crucial that the international community takes immediate action to address the root causes of the violence. The first step must be to lift the siege of Gaza and end the brutal occupation. Accountability for militant settler violence should also be demanded. Jagjit Singh

Utica, N.Y.: As we have all seen, bombing Gaza to rubble has not worked out so well in the past. Heres an idea for Israel to consider: How about not bombing Gaza, or going in at all? How about offering an immediate ceasefire and a promise to lift the blockade of Gaza upon the safe return of every hostage? Of course, Israel must hunt down the brutal Hamas murderers. However, she should also provide desperately needed sustenance to the Palestinian people. Its a sad truth that these poor people have been mistreated by Israel, but its also true that they have been left to wallow in squalor and misery by all of their obscenely wealthy neighbors. We think its time for Israel to do something different. How about waging peace? Jeff and Joan Ganeles

Manhattan: Voicer Betty Ussach apparently thinks Israel is making what she terms a disproportionate response to aggression. I assume she is referring to Israels response to the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel. So, I guess she describes deliberate murder of babies, rapes of women and abduction of people, including the elderly, ill and children, as aggression rather than terrorism. War is horrible and no one I know wants to see innocent children or adults suffer on either side. However, Hamas terrorism must be ended! Sue Deutsch

Kew Gardens: The prime minister of Israel said the repercussions his nation will rain on Gaza will be felt for generations. Sen. Cory Booker said Hamas knew exactly what the repercussions would be for its attack on Israel without concern for the Palestinians and Palestinian-Americans in Gaza. He further stated that Hamas only objective is to kill Jews. If that is the case, then the leadership of Hamas and most of its membership might not even be in Gaza and were probably gone before their military cadre invaded Israel. However, the photographs, videos and interviews with Gaza residents attesting to the horrors they endure during the Israeli Defense Forces bombardment and incursion will provide Hamas with a major recruitment tool. Unfortunately, the repercussions will be felt for generations. As American author Raymond E. Feist stated, Never underestimate the potential for human stupidity when wealth and power are at stake. Glenn Hayes

Brooklyn: Once again, Leonard Greene misunderstands or misrepresents an event or situation (Peaceniks, show yourselves! column, Oct. 22). In his statement describing the recent terrorist attacks in Israel where a hospital was blown up and little kids have been kidnapped by murderous terrorists he casually misrepresents the gravity and depravity of the situation. Hamas terrorists breached the Israeli border, kidnapped and murdered hundreds of teens and 20-somethings at a concert, then paraded bodies through the streets. They also kidnapped and murdered many older people. The hospital you refer to as being blown up was not. A misfired terrorist rocket landed in its parking lot. But dont worry, youre not alone on that one. The New York Times also incorrectly reported that event as the IDF striking a hospital in Gaza. Hopefully, that helps explain the lack of peaceniks in tie-dyed T-shirts and why our government stands with Israel. Jack Flynn

Amityville, L.I.: I found it amazing and odd that new NYPD Commissioner Eddie Caban, a man, was lauded for shaping his departments leadership team to his liking. Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, a woman, was not afforded the same. She was met with disdain, ridicule and lawsuits. Barbara Reynolds

Oak Ridge, N.J.: Voicer Lenzy Kelley complains about gas prices going down. Its one of two things: Lenzy has a ton of money invested in oil futures or he needs to get a mental health checkup. I hope gas is $4 a gallon by Thanksgiving so I can read you crying in the Voice of the People, Why, why, why? Jim Heimbuch

Whitsett, N.C.: Bed bugs are spreading again. Its in France now but also in Las Vegas hotels. As people travel, so do those insects. Always check your things before bringing them into your car or home. Bed bugs dont like lavender, so its a repellent. They sell bed bug sprays in stores. Knowledge is power. Deonia Neveu

Madison, Wisc.: As a conservative, a person of color and an immigrant, I would be thrilled to see Byron Donalds become the first African-American speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Americas commitment to diversity must be steadfast. With people from all over the world coming to the United States for a better life, our legislative branch of government must also be diverse. I am happy to see growing diversity in Congress. It is wonderful to see Donalds, a hard-working member of Congress from Florida, announcing his candidacy for the speakership. I hope Republicans in Washington will unite to elect him. Tawsif Anam

Staten Island: Vote for Sen. Bob Menendez, who has had a black cloud over his head for several years. I can only guess that the people of New Jersey vote for a party, not the person. This type of voting is what is hurting our country. With that said, will it change peoples minds when they go out to vote? I can only hope it does. ThomasBell

Bronx: Donald Trump and his extreme MAGA supporters keep saying theres a witch hunt against him. Well, a thought came to mind: What if he was splashed with water? If he melts (he wont), then he may have a point. Lets cut the nonsense already! There is no witch hunt. This is about accountability for an individual who has spent years committing despicable actions, both criminal and unethical, while avoiding consequences with lies and threats. He is finally facing accountability with a multitude of civil lawsuits, criminal indictments and sanctions for violating court orders. Michael S. Wilbekin

Holliswood: To Voicer Joe Ewansky: No, its not cool for a kid to bring a gun to school. But the crux of my letter is that its a rarity, as the numbers provided in the Daily News editorial (K-12 gauge, Oct. 15) bear out (1,150 guns across 130,930 schools in 50 states during the course of one year). Your child is much more likely to get hit by a car going to or coming from school than ever encountering a gun at school. Facts are stubborn things. Stop letting yourself be gaslit. Gregory W. Chupa

Bed bugs on vacay? Heres how to keep them from hitching a ride back home with you – AOL

Theyre coming. And theyre coming to ruin your vacation and your sleep.

Bed bugs.

The ugly little pests that can cause huge infestations.

Currently, there are reports of a huge bed bug infestation in Paris and this news is not only concerning to residents of the city, but to travelers as well.

If you have a vacation planned soon, dont fret. Heres a breakdown of how to spot bed bugs, prevention and cities where they are most common.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD), Most people get bed bugs while traveling. Bed bugs are tiny insects that feed on human blood. They can crawl into a suitcase or onto clothing unnoticed.

However, it is possible to spot them. Here are some tips from AAD:

When you walk into the room or cabin, take a deep breath. Do you notice a sweet or musty odor? If there is a heavy infestation, you may notice this smell. Bed bugs produce chemicals to help them communicate.

Next, check the bed. Look carefully at the blankets, sheets, pillows and mattress pad. Then, check the mattress and box spring: Do you see blackish specks, which could be bed bug excrement? Specks of blood anywhere, especially near seams? Shell-like remains on the bed, bedding or furniture? Bed bugs have an outer shell that they shed and leave behind as they grow.

Youll also want to check all upholstered furniture. While checking, you may see bed bugs or their eggs. A bed bug is about the size of an apple seed.

If you find signs of bed bugs, you should immediately request another room or cabin. The other room should not be near the current room.

When you enter your room or cabin for the first time, place your suitcase on the luggage rack. If the room has bed bugs, they can crawl unnoticed from the bed or floor to your suitcase.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Since bed bugs are only about the width of a credit card, they can squeeze into really small hiding spots. If a crack will hold a credit card, it could hide a bed bug.

The EPA has a few specific ways to spot the ones that are harder to see:

Check in the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, in the folds of curtains

Check in drawer joints

Check electrical receptacles and appliances

Look under loose wall paper and wall hangings

Look at the junction where the wall and the ceiling meet

Even look in the head of a screw

According to PestWorld.org: 97% of pest professionals have treated bed bugs in the past year and a majority of them (69%) say that bed bug problems are rising.

So, how can you prevent them from invading your home or ruining your vacation? Heres what Orkin says.

At home:

Inspect your home for signs of bed bugs regularly. Check the places where bed bugs hide during the day, including mattress tags and seams, and behind baseboards, headboards, electrical outlets and picture frames. Inspect when you move in, after a trip, when a service worker visits or after guests stay overnight.

Decrease clutter around your home to make it easier to spot bed bugs on your own or during professional inspections.

Examine all secondhand furniture before bringing it inside your home.

When traveling use the SLEEP method:

Survey the hotel room for signs of an infestation. Be on the lookout for tiny, ink-colored stains on mattress seams, in soft furniture and behind headboards.

Lift and look in bed bug hiding spots: the mattress, box spring and other furniture, as well as behind baseboards, pictures and even torn wallpaper.

Elevate luggage away from the bed and wall. The safest places are in the bathroom or on counters.

Examine your luggage carefully while repacking and once you return home from a trip. Always store luggage away from the bed.

Place all dryer-safe clothing from your luggage in the dryer for at least 30-45 minutes at the highest setting after you return home.

If youre looking to travel to one of these cities, it may be best to do some research about where you are planning to stay. Or perhaps add them to a do not travel list. Youve been warned.

In fact, according to Orkins list of Top 50 Bed Bug Cities, Ohio cities dominate the list. Six Ohio cities are listed: Cleveland-Akron, Columbus, Cincinnati, Youngstown, Dayton and Toledo. Yikes.

Cleveland-Akron was ranked number four on the list, followed by Columbus, Ohio at number 10, Cincinnati at number 13, Youngstown was ranked 27th, Dayton is listed at 34 and Toledo is listed at number 38.

Atlanta, Georgia made the list at number 16.

Here are the top ten:

Chicago

New York

Philadelphia

Cleveland-Akron, Ohio

Los Angeles

Detroit

Indianapolis

Baltimore

Washington, D.C.

How to prevent bed bugs getting into your mattress 3 actions to … – Tom’s Guide

Bed bugs are prolific. Once inside your home theyll spread like wildfire, quickly infesting your furniture, mattress, bedding and curtains. Getting rid of bed bugs is very hard without the help of pest control, and when these critters bite your skin, those bites can feel itchy and sore for a while.

The telltale signs of bed bugs in your bedroom include a musty odor, blood stains on your mattress and bedding, eggs that measure around 1mm in size, shed skin, feces, and not to mention actual bedbugs crawling around at night. In the day they like to hide in mattress tufts and folds.

Even the best mattresses with fully hypoallergenic designs arent immune, so being prepared is your best defence. With that in mind, here are three things you can do right now to prevent bed bugs from infiltrating your mattress

A basic mattress protector wont save you from bed bugs. Instead youll need a zippered mattress encasement. This piece of fabric slips over your entire mattress, covering the top, bottom and all four sides. You then zip it shut.

If you dont have bed bugs, a mattress encasement will keep the critters out. If you do have bedbugs, the mattress encasement keeps the bugs sealed inside until they die and you can dispose of the mattress safely.

You dont get bed bugs just because your home is dirty. However, regular cleaning of your mattress helps you stay on top of any potential critters, bacteria, mold and allergens.

Can bed bugs fly or jump?

According to the New York State Department of Health, bed bugs do not fly or jump. However they crawl quickly and are active at night, choosing to hide in the day.

Now is the time to learn how to clean a mattress properly. We recommend stripping all bedding and putting it on a hot wash: that includes your duvet and pillows too, but check the instructions if you have down bedding.

Vacuum the top, bottom and sides of your mattress, then steam clean every inch of it. Leaving it in direct sunlight to dry helps kill dust mites, mold and bacteria. Finish by vacuuming your bed frame, checking for any signs of bedbugs there too.

Mattresses arent the only places bed bugs love to live, so check the rest of your furniture, curtains and throws. Unfortunately there are many ways bed bugs can invade your home, including from a neighboring property that already has an infestation.

Places to check include your couch, chairs, clothes, and box spring or divan bed base. Remember, the signs of bed bugs include a musty odor, blood stains, eggs or shed skin, and tiny dark specks of feces.

Youll need one that covers the top, bottom and all four sides of your mattress. Make sure it's designed especially to ward off bed bugs or to keep them trapped inside if you already have an infestation on your hands.

A good bed bug mattress cover should be machine washable and able to withstand a very hot wash. Ensure it comes in the right size for your mattress too. Here are our top three bed bug mattress cover picks:

Bed bug sprays are loaded with chemicals, which are needed to kill these pesky critters. But they can also lead to discoloration of your mattress or even change the feel of the fabric on the top layer.

Bed bug droppings 101

Bed bug feces are made up of digested blood, so their droppings will be a dark rust or black color. They are tiny and hard to miss.

Our best tip is to check the care instructions for your mattress beforehand and to read the full instructions for the bed bug spray you want to buy. Some, such as the Hot Shot Bed Bug Killer, can be used on most mattresses as long as you dont saturate the mattress:

Bed bug spray can be used on bed frames too, as well as in furniture such as bedside cabinets and drawers. Always read the instruction label on the spray to find out what materials it should not be used with.

Two KY Cities Pop Up on a National ‘Most Bed Bugs’ ListGood … – WBKR

If I get through this story without scratching, it will be a miracle. I can merely THINK of certain insects, and I'll start itching. The mind is a fascinating thing.

And BED BUGS top the list. I have never seen one in person, and I thank my lucky stars for that. In fact, I almost didn't write that sentence for fear it might JINX me. Certainly, that isn't the kind of jinx I need in my life. In case you were wondering, here's what an infestation can look like. Brace yourself:

To be perfectly honest, I know that bed bugs are bad news, but I had no idea it could get THAT bad. That's horror-movie level, if you ask me. And right now, Paris FR is dealing with a city-wide infestation. Talk about horrors.

Hopefully, the two Kentucky cities that find themselves on Orkin's list of the 50 cities with the biggest bed bug problems don't have situations like this to report, but Lexington and Louisville ARE on it.

So, how did Orkin come up with this list? Data, my friends. Treatment data gathered from metro areas where the most work was done to eradicate these vile little pests. Chicago has the dubious distinction of claiming a THREE-PEAT. Yes, the Windy City is number one for the third year in a row. And while you might think it's all really large metropolitan areas, cities like Champaign IL, Charleston WV, and Harrisburg PA also made the cut. Their populations are a fraction of the populations of New York City, Philadelphia, the aforementioned Chicago, and other huge metros on the Orkin list.

The way Orkin describes how these things operate sounds like, yes, a HORROR MOVIE:

So that's not very comforting, is it? And listen, I don't want you to think my tone indicates I don't take this seriously. I absolutely do. Bed bugs are a nightmare; I have a good friend who was once in the exterminating business, and we've had bed bug discussions. They're chilling.

HERE'S an exterminator showing us how to deal with a bed bug issue should one arise, heaven forbid:

As far as Lexington and Louisville are concerned, they ARE pretty low on the list--No. 46 and No. 49 respectively--and the 'Ville looks like it's making its way OFF the list.

Hopefully, you won't be encountering any bed bug problems anywhere, but Orkin--which also provides tips on how to protect yourself while traveling--is a pretty reliable resource. So is ANY exterminator, for that matter. In the new world of social media networking, I'm certain you're no more than three degrees of separation away from one.
