Eeek. bed bugs? Makes me itchy just thinking about it.

The Amazon facility in Amarillo, Texas is currently closed while they battle a nasty bed bug problem. They identified the presence of the icky bugs and were forced to shut down in order to get rid of the pests. Luckily, all of the employees are currently on paid leave until the matter is dealt with.

Have you ever tried to get rid of bed bugs? It's not something I've ever had to do, but I know a few friends who have. They say it's pretty rough. Not only do bed bugs feed on blood, but they also cause all kinds of nasty skin rashes and allergies, and can even have psychological effects on a person.

That's a bad bug.

Bed bugs can be pretty hard to get rid of because they can live up to a year without feeding at all. I wish I could go that long without eating. It would save me a ton of money on groceries.

According toWebMD, the best way to get rid ofbed bugsis to wash all of your linens in hot water and dry them on the hottest setting. Then, scrub your mattress seams with a stiff brush, vacuum the infested area, repair all of the nooks and crannies they could be hiding at in your home. You also want to get rid of all of your clutter and encase your mattress in a zipped cover for one year to ensure they're all dead.

That sounds like quite a bit of work. A warehouse storing thousands upon thousands of products sounds like a HUGE job when it comes to getting rid of bed bugs. Here's to hoping they're successful and that none of those critters made itto Lubbock's Amazon facility.

Texas Amazon Facility Temporarily Closed Due to Bed Bug Infestation – Newstalk1290

Update 10:09 a.m. 9/30/22: The facility reopened this morning after it was determined that bad bugs weren't actually present at the facility. Amazon's statement:

Multiple pest control experts and a certified entomologist have not found any evidence of bed bugs anywhere in our facility. Out of an abundance of caution, the site will remain closed today for disinfecting, and we will resume normal operations on Friday, Sept 30.

Update 3:42 p.m. 9/28/2022: Sam Stephenson with Amazon Public Relations reached out to clarify that this is a returns center. No products are being shipped to customers from the facility.

This has to be one of the strangest stories Ive ever written.

12:10 p.m. 9/28/2022:KWTX is reporting that Amazon had to temporarily close its Amarillo facility due to bed bugs. Thats right bed bugs. So, the next time you get a package from Amazon, you might want to inspect it closely. Otherwise, you may end up with an infestation in your home.

Not that theyre shipping anything from the facility at the moment, but theres no telling how long they had the issue before they noticed it. Not that bed bugs are hard to identify. According to Live Science, theyre about the size of an apple seed but are known for hiding their small, flat bodies in tiny cracks and crevices. So, hopefully, they caught the infestation early.

Amazon officials say that all of the facilitys current inventory is being inspected. After the inspection is done, the plan is to recycle the items or return them to suppliers.

In the meantime, all employees are being paid and sites in the area are processing customer orders.

WebMD says while cleaning the area where the bugs live is helpful, the bestway to get rid of them all together is by using insecticides. However, it can be harmful to treat your bed or bedroom with chemicals, so use caution. Your best bet would be to reach out to a professional exterminator to rid your home of bed bugs.

Tightly woven fabrics, such as cotton that prevents dust mites from penetrating the weave, are considered hypoallergenic. Dust mites are smaller than bed bugs, so any mattress cover that is hypoallergenic will prevent the bed bugs from moving through the material.

The weak point in any mattress cover is the zipper specifically the endpoint of the zipper. If there is going to be any gap, that is where it will be. To compensate, manufacturers will put Velcro or some other cover over the end of the zipper when it closes.

Plastic sheets or covers make noise when you lie on them or toss and turn during the night.
