‘Unfit and unsafe:’ Mold, rodents and bed bugs prompt closure of St. Thomas, Ont. facility – CTV News London
LONDON, ONT. -- An ongoing investigation that began in 2020 into the conditions at Walnut Manor supportive living facility in St. Thomas has led to a Section 13 order to have the home closed and the residents relocated.
During a complaint investigation at Walnut Manor in St. Thomas, Southwestern Public Health identified public health violations that pose a significant risk to the Walnut Manor residents, says Southwestern Public Health Director Peter Haywood.
According to the investigation, the living conditions inside the home were deemed to be unfit and unsafe to live in.
We identified extensive mold contamination within the building, we also identified a severe rodent infestation, bed bug infestation, and we also identified gross food contamination caused by the rodents, says Haywood, who adds the closure is for the safety of the residents but also a chance for the owner to properly fix the issue.
The purpose of the order is to ensure the safety of the residents at the Walnut Manor, and allow violations be addressed and remedied quickly with the least impact on human health.
Walnut Manor resident Donald Andress spoke with CTV News after he was taken to the Joe Thornton Community Centre as a temporary shelter. Basically they came in and told us we were kicked out, and then they shipped us over here."
Its a better place to live right now, he says.
When Andress asked about the status of his belongings he was told, they stay there, because of the bug infestation, bed bugs.
It wasnt very nice, the meals werent very good, and conditions of the house were really run down, adds Andress.
CTV News London contacted the company that runs the facility late Wednesday afternoon and was told that all the allegations the health unit has brought forward are untrue.
The company admits there was mold found in the basement and says they are rectifying that.
The spokesperson went on to say that the safety and well-being of all of the residents and staff is their number one priority.

Bed Bugs Shut Down A Canadian Government Building & It’s Not The First Time It Happened – Narcity
You might not expect to hear about bed bugs in an office building because of its name but government workers are quickly learning that's not the case. Bed bugs in a Canadian government building are keeping workers at home. Unfortunately, this isn't the first time critters have shown up in government buildings.
A government building located at 70 Crmazie Street in Gatineau is shut down all because of bed bugs found in the office. The shut down is for the rest of the week with only one floor actually remaining open to workers.
According to CTV News, the bed bugs were first found on one floor of the building last week. When a canine unit came in over the weekend, beg bugs were found on every floor in the building.
And this isn't the first time that government buildings in the area were impacted by bugs being found in them.
On October 4 an office just across the Ottawa river in the capital was found to have bed bugs in it. Then the next day it was reported that a kitchenette in the building would also be treated for cockroaches.
"Dealing with pests in this building is nothing new for us. Bed bugs were first reported and treated on the first floor of the building in March and April 2018," an employee of the bed bug and cockroach-infested building in Ottawa told CTV News.
A former employee also confirmed the pest problem on Twitter.
And another Canadian made the most of the news by turning into a funny joke.
Last year another government building was also shut down and fumigated because of spiders. Employees at the Shared Services Canada building were sent away from the office twice after spiders thought to be venomous were spotted on two different occasions.
The second time the spider was spotted was after the building was fumigated. Both times employees were told to work from home.
A spokesperson for the department told the CBC that the spider found wasn't actually the venomous spider it was originally thought to be.
People working in the Gatineau government building, which is the building for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, are being told to work from home for the rest of the week or make arrangements to work somewhere else.
The one floor that remains open is the sixth floor where employees work with sensitive information and can't actually take their work home with them.
Hopefully, this is the last we hear of bugs infesting government buildings.

TTC Responds To Bed Bug Sighting On The Subway In Toronto (PHOTO) – Narcity
Torontonians are absolutely disgusted by a new photo of a bed bugon the TTC, which surfaced recently online. People have not been holding back about it on social media and it's safe to say many do not want to sit on the subway seats anymore. In response to the backlash, the TTC has now commented to the bed bug sighting in Toronto.

It all started when a photo of an actual bed bug on the chair of a TTC subway emerged onto Twitter. The photo was uploaded this morning and is starting to gain traction and cause widespread concern.

The sighting led one Twitter user to call out the TTC and ask what they had to say about it. User @UrbanXposurescommented on the tweet an hour ago and wrote, "@TTChelps any response to this?!?". The TTC Customer Service responded promptly in approximately 20 minutes with their explanation as to how a bed bug could have gotten onto the subway seat.
Check out what the TTC had to say in response belowon Twitter.
Our vehicles are cleaned daily, unfortunately bedbugs can be found anywhere as they travel with passengers but subways are an inhospitable environment for them , however once we receive a complaint that particular vehicle will receive a deep clean ^TH

In other words, bed bugs could be seen on the subway at any given time, based on what the TTC Customer Service said. Yeah, we're getting goosebumps just thinking about it.
On the bright side, the TTC does state that subways are typically an unwelcoming place for bed bugs, so they might not be seen there super often or at least we hope.
Many Torontonians are unsurprisingly pretty grossed out by the bed bug sighting. The incident has even traumatized some people, who now swear off sitting on the train's seats.

To make things even worse, Toronto has also been named the bed bug capital of Canada. The city has the worst bed bug problem in all of Canada. One Twitter user even used this opportunity to call out city officials for failing to competently deal with the bed bug problem in Toronto.
Not at all surprising. This city needs to take bed bugs seriously. I bet if they had them in City Hall there would be more action. @cityoftoronto

If there's one thing you can learn from this, it's to watch where you sit or put your hands while you're riding the TTC subway. Or honestly, maybe just stand altogether. Those seats can be pretty gross regardless. Here's hoping no bed bugs come your way while you're commuting.

Toronto ranks as the worst city in Canada for bed bugs in 2020
For the third year in a row, despite a 20 per cent reduction in sightings since 2019 and lockdown orders put in place to keep people at home, Toronto has once again ranked as the worst city for bed bugs in the entire country.
According to a report from Orkin Canada, the nations'largest pest control company, Toronto took the top spot on the list, while other Ontario jurisdictions includingSudbury, Oshawa, Scarborough, Whitby, and Ottawa also made the top 10.
The ranking was compiled based onthe number of bed bug treatments the company performed from Jan.1, 2020 through Dec.31, 2020, including both residential and commercial treatments.
Fortunately, despite Toronto taking the top spot once again, Orkin said in a news release that overall sightings are down across the country year-over-year thanks to pandemic-related restrictions.
"Travel bans, stay-at-home orders, and a general shift to working remotely have resulted in less opportunities for these hitchhikers to move around, for the first time since Orkin Canada released its annual survey five years ago," reads thenews release.
But the company doesn't expect this trend to continue once orders are lifted.
"Due to their ability to double in population about every 16 days," said Orkin, "it should not be difficult for bed bugs to regain their grip on the Canadian market."
