Freezing Bed Bugs: Does the Cold Kill Them? – orkincanada.ca

How Bed Bugs Get Inside

Bed bugs are insects that are often introduced into homes via infested belongings such as luggage or second-hand furniture. Since these pests bite, homeowners with bed bugs usually want a quick and easy fix to get rid of them.

Unfortunately, these tough pests are able to breed quickly, hide well, and survive all but the most extreme conditions.

Putting infested objects like clothes or bedding in a freezer can help get rid of the bed bugs, but each item should be placed in a plastic bag prior to freezing.

Keep the temperature at -19 degrees Celsius for about four days in order to be effective. Even then, some bed bugs may live through the freezing process.

Cautions

Keep in mind that putting some items into the cold may damage them. Freezing is also best for small items, not whole-house control. For mattresses, furniture, and other belongings, homeowners will need to explore other control methods.

Residents should not attempt to freeze bed bugs by turning off the heat or opening the windows in their homes during cool weather. This tactic does not work and can lead to burst pipes and structural damage.

Some pest professionals use heat or freezing treatments to control bed bugs, but these methods require special equipment, training and skills. As a result, freezing can kill bed bugs but is not the most practical approach for residents to attempt themselves.

A call to the bed bug experts at Orkin Canada is the best option to remove bed bug infestations.

Pest threat

Ants and mice are moving inside and wildlife may be looking for potential harbourage areas. Spiders are constructing egg sacs and mosquito activity is increasing. House fly activity can be expected. Commercial accounts will need to be aware of increased small fly activity. Nuisance wildlife, such as squirrels and chipmunks, will be much more noticeable.

Home Bed Bugs Identifying Bed Bugs

Since bed bugs are nocturnal and so small, detecting them can be very difficult. Signs & symptoms of a bed bug infestation can be found in bedding and on mattresses. People will sometimes roll onto bedbugs while sleeping, resulting in blood stains on the sheets. Live bed bugs will leave dark brown or black spots of dried excrement on infested surfaces after feeding and also exude a very subtle sweet, musty odour.

Bedbugs are small, flat and have oval-shaped bodies. They have six legs and two antennae. Bed bugs cannot fly and have short, golden coloured body hair that can make their bodies appear to be striped.

Adult bed bugs are reddish-brown in colour and approximately 5-6mm in length. After feeding, bed bugs can swell to upwards of 10mm and get fatter and darker in colour.

Bed bug nymphs are approximately 1-4mm in length (the size of the head of a pin) and are white or a golden colour until they feed. This light coloration acts as a camouflage and helps them hide in mattresses and carpets.

Bed bugs turned stay at Airbnb into nightmare, traveller says – Toronto Observer

A road trip from Toronto turned into a nightmare for Geoff Mosherafter hechecked into an Airbnb in Cleveland.

Im pretty familiar with bed bugs and, when we walked in, the apartment had that musty bed bug smell, Mosher said.

Riddled in bites, he had to cut his trip short and spent his shortstay at a laundromat, Mosher said.

I started getting bites on the first nightI had probably 35 bites by the end of the second day, he said.We just got out of there.

Airbnb apartmentsareinexpensive, easy to book and can be done from the palm of your hand. Airbnb is an online hospitality service that letsusers rent or list an apartment. Last year subscribers on the highly used app skyrocketed in centralToronto and, while it may be great for users, some condo tenants are not impressed.

In an interview earlier this year, Airbnb spokesperson Nick Shapiro said the majority of Airbnb guests are respectful and problems among the millions of listings are rare. He said the company also offers an online tool called Neighbours. Neighbours is a forum where anyone can share concerns about a listing in their community. A team at Airbnb reviews every concern and addresses them accordingly.

Mosher said his bad experience with Airbnb also comes closer to home. He lives in a condo in Regent Park, an Airbnb hot spot. He said his biggest concern is with the companys accountability.

Toronto city council began drafting Airbnb regulations late last year to address concerns from the public. Meanwhile, some condo buildings in the city have revamped their tenant contracts to keeproom-sharing services out.

Home Bed Bugs Bed Bugs in Hotels

Once inside a hotel or home, bed bugs can spread rapidly from room to room. They do so through pipes, in vacuum cleaners, on clothing and luggage. Sanitation and the cleanliness of an establishment is not an issue in where you can find bed bugs, and since bed bugs are such notorious hitch hikers they can be found in almost any establishment no matter how posh or upscale.

Although bed bugs can thrive in almost any type of building, hotels and motels are particularly vulnerable. Thats because of the transient nature of their clients and the ease with which these pests travel in luggage, clothing and furniture. Short of inspecting guests luggage as they check in, there is no known way to completely prevent bed bugs from entering a property. Once they are inside, two bed bugs can lay up to ten eggs in one day. Thats why it is important to have any rooms with a bed bug problem treated immediately to prevent them from becoming a widespread infestation.
