mcbrooklyn: Bedbugs On Four Floors at the Brooklyn DA’s Office

Tuesday, February 10th, 2015

Bed bugs were found on four floors of the Kings County District Attorneys Office on Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn Friday, reports the Brooklyn Eagle, and now lawyers at Brooklyn Supreme Court are a wee bit worried that the critters might spread to the courthouse hidden in files and paperwork.

We'd be worried, too. If the bugs have already spread to four floors, that's a massive infestation.

The Brooklyn D.A.s office "shares a roof" with the Brooklyn Marriott. But the Marriott told the Eagle that the foul insects "didnt breach hotel security."

UPDATE: The Above the Law blog has gotten ahold of amusing internal Brooklyn D.A. emails about the bed bug crisis.

What To Do When The Bed Bugs Bite*

By Marc Miner, Esq.

Bedbugs were mentioned in ancient Greece as early as 400 BCE. Pliny's Natural History, first published circa the year 77 in Rome, claimed that bedbugs had medicinal value in treating ailments such as snake bites and ear infections.i

John Southal wrote in his Treatise of Buggs that he was bitten by them in the West Indies in 1726 and that bed buggs have been known to have been in England above sixty years, and every season increasing so upon us as to become terrible to almost every inhabitant in about this metropolis. He was the maker of the nonpareil liquor for destroying buggs.ii

Bed bugs were believed to have been eradicated in the United States over fifty years ago. However, over the last several years they have made a resurgence. Likewise, litigation over the effects of bed bugs has been on the rise. Experts arent sure what has caused the return of bed bugs but speculate that it is due to a combination of greater international travel and the decreased use of strong pesticides.iii

Common bed bugs (Cimex lectularis) are small wingless insects that feed on warm blooded animals. They range in size from a poppy seed to a quarter of inch. Bed bugs can live up to 12 months and can survive 6 to 7 months without feeding. Females can lay a total of 200 to 300 eggs during their lifetime. The bugs hide in crevices, mattresses, books, picture frames, or any other opportune hiding place near a suitable meal. Because of their size and ability to hide they are notoriously difficult to exterminate. Often, if only the room they are in is treated for extermination they will travel to abutting rooms, whether next door, above or below.iv

As Bed Bugs do not fly they are usually transported via persons, animals, luggage, furniture, or other movable items. There is also a risk that furniture that has been left outside for garbage pick up may be infected by bed bugs, and therefore should be avoided.v What appears to be a hidden treasure may bring disaster.

Bed bugs inject a tiny bit of saliva and then sip out a few drops of blood from the body. While they have been known to harbor pathogens in their blood, including the Plague and hepatitis B, they have not (yet) been linked to the transmission of any diseases.vi Some individuals, however, will get welts as a result of an allergic reaction, and can get skin infections from scratching. Additionally, the stress effects of a bed bug attack include insomnia, panic attacks and/or post traumatic stress syndrome. The economic costs as a result of a bed bug attack include: Medical treatment; cleaning costs; extermination services; and loss of property as a result of having to discard, and replace, belongings.vii

The effects of the bites might not appear for a few days after the first bites take place. The effects can vary greatly from person to person, even among those sleeping in the same bed, as a result of a difference in allergic reactions.viii PRACTICE TIP: Pictures of any bite marks should be taken as soon, and as often, as possible to document the physical effects of the bites, as the bite marks will fade and usually disappear. Pictures showing particularly bad reactions (large red welts) will be invaluable to proving and settling a case, and will usually invoke a visceral reaction from the person viewing the photograph.

Bed bugs have been found in hotels, apartments, office buildings, dormoratories, and all places where large amounts of people frequent.ix In July of 2009, the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Association, whose members include 1,000 hotels and other lodging properties, held a Web seminar on bed bugs as a proactive initiative for members who want to learn more about how to spot, treat and cope with bed bugs.x

Did you know that bed bugs have nothing to do with how clean your home is? Bed bugs have been found in some of the top hotels in the world. Even Bill Clinton's office got bed bugs at one point. It's a common misconception that there is a relation to cleanliness, when the truth is that any of us can get them at any time. They simply travel from place to place and they don't discriminate based on how clean or dirty you are.

Bed bugs have been found on trains, cabs, in cars, in homes, offices, hotels and just about everywhere. While, it's definitely important to maintain a clean environment to prevent ample hiding places for bed bugs, it has nothing to do with getting them in the first place.

Bed bugs are highly attracted to CO2 (carbon dioxide), which we breathe out while we sleep as well as throughout the day. Our pets also exhale CO2. Bed bugs are naturally attracted to this, which is why they are able to find where you are in the dark during the night. CO2 acts as a 'visual' guide to the bed bug to find you in the dark or any warm-blooded mammal for that matter.

Bed bugs are extremely difficult to get rid of once you have them, which is why it's fully advisable to call a professional bed bug exterminator and pest control service to manage the problem for you. Bed bugs are nocturnal and usually come out to bite you during the night when you're sound asleep. You usually won't be able to feel their bites until the next day when you start scratching and noticing that you've been bitten.

Trying to remove bed bugs on your own is extremely stressful, tedious and chances are you will not be able to find all of them or their eggs, which means the problem will not go away.

The reason why they are so hard to remove is that they have very agile bodies that can slide into the tiniest crevices in your home, such as around your kitchen, around your baseboards near your bed and even in the cracks in your floor. They can virtually be anywhere and they can live for an entire year without food, which makes them extremely difficult to deal with.

Since bed bugs are so difficult to track and kill, in addition to our highly trained exterminator technicians who can assess and handle the problem efficiently, we also employ the use of bed bug sniffing dogs that can sniff out bed bugs anywhere in your home for the most effective treatment possible.

Dogs have an accuracy rating of about 98%, according to a study. For this reason, it's highly advised to hire a canine service to give you the most accurate inspection possible. If you aren't quite sure if you have bed bugs or not, then having a bed bug canine inspection is one of the best ways to know for sure.

Bed Bug Report for Marriott New York City Brooklyn Bridge …

Monday, October 13th, 2014

Jim S. on 06/24/2014

Stayed at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriot from 6/16-6/18. Never saw a bed bug but by day 2 I had at least 5 bites that matched those associated with bed bugs.

Anonymous on 10/01/2013

Stayed there two nights checked for bugs both nights and never found one. Very clean I even called the front desk and asked if they had had any issues lately and they said they hadn't had any real problems or infestations ever with bed bugs. But once or twice people had seen one or two maybe left over from the last person.

Anonymous on 11/01/2012

I saw a bed bug crawling on my pillow. I immediately jumped and and flicked it off. At the time I was not positive it was a bed bug, but the more I googled it the more it matched the pictures I was seeing on the internet. My friend found a tiny bite on his ankle and a spot of blood was left on the bed sheets from it. We spoke to the manager and we switched rooms. A couple of days later the Marriott called and said the lab did find bed bugs in the room. They said there was "bed bug activity" but

not an infestation of bed bugs...meaning they found a few, but it was not infested. Either way I will be staying away from that hotel!

Bed Bug Caught! on 09/25/2012

I was staying in room 396 on September 24, 2012 and saw a bed bug crawling on my bed sheet in the morning after my shower. I killed it with the sheet and blood spurted out of it, obviously just having fed on me when I slept last night. Completely disgusted, I immediately called the manager up to my room, who came up and saw the dead bug. The hotel called me today and said they called in an independent company that comes in and inspected the room and YES, it WAS confirmed to be a bed bug. They s

aid they didnt find any more (as if only ONE is in the entire room?????? That's completely ridiculous!!!!) and said they were NOT going to quarantine the room, which I think is just awful.

Bed Bugs Exterminator Brooklyn NYC: Brooklyn Pest Control

Tuesday, July 8th, 2014

Thank you for visiting our pest extermination website! Our company, Bedbugs Exterminator Brooklyn, provides Pest Extermination and Management Services for the borough of Brooklyn, and we also have affiliate offices which serve all five NYC boroughs.

Over the last twenty years, New York City has experienced a veritable explosion of cases of Bedbug Infestation. No matter where you live in the city, and no matter how impeccable that you keep your home, you are at a serious risk of Bedbug Infestation.

Bedbugs thrive in densely populated communities like Brooklyn, and it only takes one fertilized female Bedbug to turn the most beautiful home into a breeding ground for Bedbugs. Bedbugs Exterminator Brooklyn was created in order to help the citizens of Brooklyn rest easier by efficiently and effectively eliminating Bedbug Infestations wherever they manifest.

We have a large staff of experienced and courteous Pest Removal Specialists that have decades of combined experience treating various Pest Problems, including Bedbug Infestations.

Bedbugs are one of the most frustrating pests in New York City. Even though Bedbugs do not directly harbor diseases, like roaches, rats, and fleas, they are still a huge problem. For one thing, Bedbugs are one of the most difficult infestations to remove. Roaches and Rats feed on the dander and organic refuse that humans and animals leave behind. Because of their diet, there are a number of different ways to easily treat these forms of infestation.

Bedbugs, on the other hand, feed exclusively on the blood of human and animal hosts. This means that they do not respond to common baits and traps which are highly effective for other forms of pest. This is actually one reason why reports of Bedbug Infestations exploded so rapidly in America.Exterminators were so effective at eliminating roaches and rats via these methods, that resistant Bedbugs quickly multiplied and became more problematic.

Bedbugs are also a headache because they leave itchy, unsightly bites which take days or even weeks to disappear. In addition to their bites, they also stain your clothing, walls, and sheets with blood and they leave rust-colored spots wherever they defecate. Bedbugs are a multifaceted problem which is nearly impossible to eliminate without the help of a trusted professional like those at Bedbugs Exterminator Brooklyn.

Dont misunderstand, although we pride ourselves on our Bedbug Elimination and Prevention Services, we are more than qualified to combat any and all Pest Infestation issues that you may face at your home or business. Whether you are dealing with roaches, termites, rodents, or avian pests, we can protect your home or business and give you the peace of mind that you deserve!

In addition to Residential Pest Removal, we can also provide you with Pest Prevention and Extermination Treatments at your commercial business as well. Whether you are a Human Resources Director, a restaurant owner, or a hotel manager, we offer dedicated and specialized services for whatever type of business you are responsible for.

Dependent upon your needs, we can provide our Pest Prevention Services at any interval you prefer, whether that be once every couple of months or only twice per year. Of course, if you have any Pest Emergencies, we can still offer our services at a moments notice.

Brooklyn New York has been infested with bed bugs just like Manhattan borough. The statistics shows in Brooklyn, District 4 (a.k.a. Bushwick) was the crawliest with 472 complaints. District 14 (comprised of bits of Flatbush, Ocean Parkway and Midwood) followed with 468 complaints, with District 12 (Borough Park, Ocean Parkway and Kensington) vying for third place with 328 calls. At 235 complaints, District 1 (Greenpoint and Williamsburg) fell around the middle of the curve, while District 6 (including Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens and Park Slope) phoned in a mere 40 distress callsi??the fewest in Brooklyn New York.

There are several ways in which dwellings in Brooklyn New York can become infested with bed bugs. One common way is for them to be picked up while traveling or when staying at temporary lodging such as hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, hostels, or motelsi??which are places that have been traditionally associated with an increased risk for housing bed bugs due to their higher rate of turnover and continual influx of temporary residents. Once acquired at such travel locations, the now hitchhiking bed bugs may then be transported and brought back to the homes of the guests in their luggage where a new infestation can then take place inside the home.

Brooklyn Exterminator Shares His Best Bed Bug Horror Stories …

Wednesday, December 18th, 2013

Although bed bug complaints and violations were said to be in decline last year, exterminator Bill Swan isn't buying it. According to Swan, NYC's bed bug epidemic is still raging, and he attributes the drop in complaints to an increasing number of New Yorkers essentially giving up, sticking an apple in their mouths and tying themselves to spits for the bed bugs armies to feast upon.

In a lengthy interview with Swan, he shared some of his craziest bed bug horror stories with us, and also explained why it doesn't work to try to get rid of them on your own. To that end, he wanted us to spread the word that his company, NYC Pest Control, is running a special this month! Any one-bedroom apartment qualifies for a $275 treatment, which Swan says is "a phenomenal price." Tell 'em Gothamist sent you for a free bed bug fart detector! (Kidding.)

In the past few years, have you gotten more calls about bed bugs or fewer calls? More. But the one thing I do see is that people are starting to raise their level of acceptance with these bugs. Im finding them all over. What does that mean, raise their level of acceptance? Well, when these were first starting, it was like alarms were going off. People were, AAGH, Ive got bed bugs! Now its like, Eh, Ive got a couple of bed bugs. It seems like theyre becoming a little more nonchalant, like an occasional roach or something.

So whats the difference, in terms of threat level, between the occasional roach and a couple of bed bugs? Well, the occasional roach would be in your kitchen by a water source, eating your food and things like that. The few bed bugs would be eating YOU. Theyre parasites. They feed off human blood.

How concerned should people be? If you just have a few, is it worth paying an exterminator hundreds of dollars? Why can't you kill them yourself? When people try to self-exterminate, theyre not taught how to find cracks and crevices. Its very small details youve gotta pay attention to when you spray. You tend to make them spread.

And when I got a little bit closer, there were hundreds and hundreds of bedbugs covering his wall behind his couch. I looked at the guy; he was chewed up, there wasnt a spot on his face that didnt have a bite on it. I said, Sir. Look behind you." He said, Theyre cockroaches. I said, Theyre not cockroaches, theyre bedbugs, and theyre eating you.

The guy looked at me as calmly as you could imagine, and says, In my religion, we dont kill bugs. Just leave them alone. Could you imagine? I swear to you. Then I had one other crazy incident happen down here off Atlantic Avenue by Long Island College Hospital. I go in for an evaluation for bedbugs, and I find bedbugs. So, the lady asks me about treatment options. I go over the chemical options, I go over some of the green options, and she says, Well, would it be possible for you to just come in and vacuum them up and release them somewhere, because I dont wanna see them harmed.

I says, Maam. Theres gotta be a candid camera on around here. I says, Do you really want me to vacuum them up and release them off in the park like theyre squirrels or something? And she said, Yeah. And I says, Maam. Ive gotta go. Ive gotta go.

You have an incredible perspective on this scourge. I think thats the word for it.

You are on the frontlines. I tell ya, Ive come in where people have actually disputed that its a bedbug and then they squish it and sniff it right in front of me. And I find that a little gross. I mean, even though Im an exterminator, Im not gonna handle these bugs barehanded, unless its an emergency and I have to. These people willingly just squish them.
