BRITS heading to Florida on holiday could be more likely to find themselves sharing a room with unwelcome guests, following a reported increase in bed bugs.

According to a new study, Orlando has moved into the Top 50 Bed Bug cities in the US for the first time.

The study, conducted bypest control service Orkin, collected bed bug treatment data between December 2017 and November 2018 to find which cities had the most treatments.

Orlando is now number 41, having re-entered the list.

The city had fallen off the list last year, but had previously appeared at number 38 in 2016, alongside Daytona Beach and Melbourne in Florida.

Othercities on the list this year include Baltimore, which has remained at number one for a third year, followed by Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Columbus and New York.

Thanks to an increase in the number of travellers, bed bugs can be carried between accommodation easier than ever.

The number of infestations has no relation to the standard of the place, as even five-star hotels are susceptible to the critters.

Orkin entomologist Chelle Hartzer explained in the survey: "Sanitation has nothing to do with prevention: from public transit to five-star resorts, bed bugs have been and can be found everywhere humans are."

They can spread across fabrics such as soft luggage, clothing and bags, as well as hide in skirting boards and carpets.

This means Brits could end up bringing home more than they bargained for.

British Pest control expert Ranjen Gohri, from 24/7 Home Rescue, previously told Sun Online Travel that:Bed bugs are becoming more and more common in the UK, and were close to approaching epidemic levels.

We estimate there has been around a three-fold surge in bed bugs in recent years, based on information from our pest controllers.

A five-step plan can be followed when staying in a hotel to check if the room is infested.

Called the S.L.E.E.P method, it recommends:

SURVEYthe room for red or brown flecks which come from blood which has been left on sheets or mattresses.

LIFT furniture and check under it. Bed bugs can hide in mattresses, skirting boards and even pictures.

ELEVATEyour luggage and try and keep it on something thats not made of material, such as a desk, to avoid bed bugs being transported home if they are present.

EXAMINEyour bags before taking them home to make sure there arent any bugs on them.

PLACEall your clothes on a hot cycle in the washing machine when you get home for at least 15 minutes to kill any bugs.

Travellers who find themselves in a room with bed bugs should tell hotel staff immediately and remove all belongings from the room.

Recently, a British tourist found herself bitten so badly during a holiday to Cape Verde that her bites became infected and she was signed off work, Sun Online Travel reported.

She says that after sitting on two pillows from a sofa in the room, her arms were bitten hundreds of times.
