I am up late because I cant stop scratching. It might be a psychological itch, but it might not be!

So today I went to work at my dreadful job at a call center where about 200 people work. Now, I had heard other people speculate that they had throw out our breakroom sofas (very suddenly) last month because they had found bedbugs in them, but I had just put that down to idle gossip. Then, one girl mentioned that she had actually seen a bedbug at her work station, but I just assumed she was a drama queen.

However, when I sat down at my desk this morning, I noticed this tiny, teensy, little bug walking over my workstation. I think it was just the contrast between the color of the bug and the color of my desk that made me notice it. Agog, I managed to catch the little bugger in a kleenex, and to my absolute HORROR, confirmed it was in fact, a bedbug.

I sort of shrieked and yelled in an alarmed voice that I had found a bedbug. This is when my supervisor came over and examined it, still alive in its kleenex prison, and whisked it off to management.

The guy who sits beside me then told me he had seen two of the little darlings crawling across his desk yesterday!

So my supervisor came back from her meeting with management and said it had been confirmed, I had indeed entrapped a bedbug. She then advised me to not tell anyone because they did not want a mass panic. Later I found out that at least three other employees had found these bugs walking around on their workstations.

Later, I went to the manager and asked what they planned to do about our apparent bed bug problem. I was advised that they were looking into it, and would possibly spray on the weekend.

ON THE WEEKEND!!!!! It is only WEDNESDAY!!!

Am I unreasonable to be horrified to be expected to sit and work in a bedbug infested environment for several more days, possibly dragging the little critters home with me and infesting my entire apartment building, not to mention the 200 other apartment buildings our employees live in?

This has grossed me out so badly that I feel like getting a doctors note or some damn thing to keep me out of that place until it is uninfested.Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Bedbugs are Not To Be Messed With. I know someone who had to move out of her apartment for weeks when she got an infestation. And then they still werent gone and she had to move out again. Bedbugs will take over your life.

Your manager sucks for telling you not to tell anyone. Because they dont want a mass panic? Theres a reason it would cause a mass panic, lady.You might show her thisarticleand thisreport, which talk about the increase in lawsuits from workers whose offices were infested with bedbugs, but their employers deliberately sat on the information.

And they will possibly spray on the weekend? Possibly?

Honestly, Id refuse to come back in until the problem is dealt with. I realize you may not have that option, but Im really, really hoping you do. And this would be a really good time for you and your coworkers to band together as a group and speak in one voice on this.

Bed bug infestations are a problem in many hotels worldwide. Even when hotels are careful, perform inspections and keep rooms clean, bed bugs can still move in. Don't trust others to protect you when you travel; instead, take precautions to protect yourself and keep bed bugs at bay.

Close the room curtains, remove the covers from the bed, and check the linens closely for bed bugs; they are about 1/4-inch long, with flat, reddish bodies, slender legs and long antennae.

Inspect the mattress and box springs for signs of bed bugs. Feces, eggs and bloodstains are all reliable signs that there are bed bugs in your room.

Check lampshades, nightstands and any upholstered furniture for bed bugs. If you notice any sign of bed bugs, ask for another room.

Hang your clothes in the closet, as far from the bed as possible. Don't drape clothes over furniture or let them touch the floor or wall.

Place your suitcase on the folding clothes rack or the ironing board; ask your hotel for one if it isn't automatically provided. Don't leave your suitcase on the dresser, bed or other furniture, and keep it zipped.

Put your shoes and slippers on a shelf in the closet, and never on the floor or by the bed. It's easy for bed bugs to crawl into shoes and go home with you.

First there were the Asian Beetles, then the mosquitoes and now experts have claimed that even the local population of bedbugs is growing.

With creepy crawling creatures making headlines and instilling fear into the hearts of residents of what seems to be becoming to be the Big Apples buggiest borough, the Tribune offers an in-depth look at some of the insects bugging Queens.

THINGS THAT GO BITE IN THE NIGHT Goodnight, sleep tight and dont let the bed bugs bitea statement most Queens residents have probably heard a thousand times from parents upon settling down to sleep. Yet after waking morning upon morning with no signs of having been bitten by one of these mysterious insects, most may not even believe they exist at all.

But they do, and in fact, theyre becoming a significant problem in the borough, according to entomologist and exterminator Gil Bloom.

Bloom, who has been in the extermination business for over 20 years and claimed to be interested in entomology, the study of insects, his whole life, said that there has been a marked increase in the number of Queens bed bugs cases in recent years.

Whereas in the earlier part of the 1990s his company, the Astoria-based Standard Extermination, would maybe get only a five or six bed bugs calls a year, Bloom said that in the past few years customer complaints have come in monthly.

Were now averaging five or six bed bugs calls a month, Bloom added. Theres definitely a rise in bed bugs.

The apparent fluctuation of the insect interested Bloom, who is the vice president of the New York State Pest Control Association and an adjunct professor at Queensborough Community College, and lead him to embark on a study along with the help of the Cornell University Agricultural Extension.

The two-tiered study, which officially began in July, involved sending out surveys throughout New York City to pest control officials and entomologists, as well as interviewing people suffering from bed bug infestations.
