Year In Review #1: New York Is Crawling With Bed Bugs, 2 Cities Among Most Infested – Hudson Valley Post

As we continue to look back at our top stories of 2023, here is our top-performing story of 2023. New York Is Crawling With Bed Bugs, 2 Cities Among Most Infested

Below is the original article:

Orkin recently released its list 50 cities across the United States with the most bed bugs. Two cities in New York State made the list.

Typically, bed bugs are 3/16 inch long. They are red to dark brown in color, according to Orkin.

Bed bugs are extremely resilient, making them difficult to control, Orkin entomologist Ben Hottel said. Contrary to popular belief, bed bugs are visible to the naked eye, but are excellent at hiding. Involving a trained professional at the sight of a bed bug introduction is recommended.

A popular city in Upstate New York and another downstate made the list. In fact, one location in New York State ranked second. If you're wondering, Chicago tops the list.

Is your hometown on the list? Do you live near? See the list below and then how to spot bed bugs.

Every year the pest control gurus at Orkin put together a list of the Top 50 Bed Bug Destinations in the United States. Which areas do you travel to that you should take extra care to watch out for these blood-sucking insects? Let's countdown to the most bed-bug-riddled city in the United States.

Buffalo, New York ranked 29th on Orkin's list. In 2022, Buffalo placed 30th.

New York City has more bed bugs than last year. In 2022, New York City had the 3rd most bed bugs in the nation. Now, New York City ranks second. Yay....

Bed bugs typically come out of hiding to feast on human blood as you sleep, according to Orkin.

Blood is their only food source. They can survive for several months while waiting for their next blood meal, officials say.

Bed bugs can easily travel from place to place by clinging to items such as luggage, purses and other personal belongings.

This year was a very busy year for the New York State government. Overall 682 bills wereintroduced passed by the legislative and signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul this year.

These Smells Could Mean You Have Bed Bugs, Pest Experts Say – Best Life

As one of the tiniest pests that can make their way into your home, bed bugs can be difficult to spot. However, in addition to keeping your eyes open, your nose may come in handy when trying to detect an infestation. According to pest experts, there are a couple of very specific scents that could mean you have bed bugs. Keep reading to get the specifics on these smells, as well as other indicators that bed bugs are present.

"Similar to a heavy cockroach infestation, there can be a distinct odor with a heavy bed bug infestation," says Ben Hottel, technical services manager at Orkin.

Christian Tweed, the renewal specialist at Clark's Termite & Pest Control, describes the smell as musty, mildew-like, and sweet: "In extremely heavy infestations, there can be a soured, sweet smell. I've heard this compared to rotten raspberries." ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb

This smell usually only arises if "many of them are squashed or disturbed," explains Nicholas Martin, professional pest control specialist and entomologist. So you may not notice it if it's the beginning of an infestation.

Hottel also points out that this scent might go unnoticed by an average person, but professionals who work in pest control will have an easier time picking up on it.

Bed bugs release pheromones when they feel they're in peril to alert other bugs to danger. The scent "is an effective way for the pests to communicate and remain hidden," Foster says.

"The smell can be quite similar to coriander or a pile of clothes that was closed in the washing machine for a couple of days or a pair of moldy shoes," Martin notes.

According to pest control expert Jordan Foster, at low concentrations, some people find this smell to be pleasant. However, if a large group of bed bugs gets disturbed, you may get a whiff of an odor similar to that of a stink bug.

In addition to smelling odors, Foster says if you see "dark blood stains on sheets and bedding," or have "itchy, irritated skin," seemingly from bites, it's time to contact a professional.

Tweed also points out that the golden-brown exoskeletons the bugs leave behind are key indicators of an infestation.

Unfortunately, these bugs may not be confined solely to your bed. Martin says you should inspect all other soft furnishings like couches and chairs. "Bed bugs can hide anywhere they feel safe," he says. "However, the most common location is your bed, as it's the best place to feed."

Bed bugs are the most active at night. "They like to hang out in small cracks and crevices around beds, couches, or other areas where people stay in one spot for several hours," says Tyler Hawkins, region field manager at Fox Pest Control. "Because of this, bedbugs are often not noticed until the infestation increases. Adult bedbugs are the size and shape of an apple seed."

Besides taking over your space, these pests nibble on your skin when you fall asleep. "During the evening, bed bugs use an anesthetic in their saliva to bite people without being detected," Foster explains. Their bites cause discomfort and itching but are not believed to be a risk for diseases. "They are, however, extremely difficult to control," Foster adds.

Here’s the Closest City to New England That’s Crawling With Bed Bugs – wokq.com

January marks the start of travel season. It's the time of year when most people book their travel plans, and for goodness sake, there are some cities to stay away from.

According to orkin.com, the top 50 cities in the country ranked for the most bed bug treatments are the big ones, and a few smaller ones you might not think of.

There's good news for New Englanders and anyone making plans to travel to New England. There were no New England cities in the top 50 places where bed bugs are found most, but the #2 ranked city was just down the I-95 corridor in New York City.

Chicago still ranks #1 as they can't seem to get a handle on the bugs, but New York is up there in rank too. #3 is Philadelphia, and at #4 the smaller city of Cleveland-Akron. Los Angeles trails behind right after.

Here's what's interesting.

The University of Maine studies bed bugs and here's what the cooperative extension writes:

Some factors that have favored their renewed expansion include a rise in international travel as countries ease or cancel their COVID-19 restrictions, the ongoing popularity of thrift shops and yard sales, and the number of people buying used furniture.

So the rise in bed bugs in the United States is not just travel but other factors as well, which puts these blood-sucking pests back into the news again.

Bed bugs are really good at hiding, "in the seams of mattresses, in box springs, in cracks of floorboards, behind peeled wallpaper, in picture frames, in couches, stuffed chairs, clothing and even the seams of curtains; wherever a dark crack or crevice might be", according to the University of Maine.

Orkin.com adds bed bugs are resilient, which makes them hard to control and eradicate. So while making those travel plans (or buying that old sofa), keep this in mind.

Now stop itching.
