More bed bugs found at Las Vegas Strip hotels over the summer: records – Yahoo News

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) Thousands are expected to travel to Las Vegas in the coming weeks for Formula 1 and the Super Bowl, but there is concern about what some of these guests could leave behind in their hotel rooms.

In August, Nexstars KLAS obtained records from the Southern Nevada Health District showing bed bugs had been found at seven hotels along the Vegas Strip since early 2022: Circus Circus, Caesars Palace, Planet Hollywood, Palazzo, Tropicana, MGM Grand, and Sahara.

Newly obtained records from health officials show bed bugs were found at two more Las Vegas Strip resort hotels in July and August.

According to a report, a guest staying at the Venetian complained about finding bed bugs on July 29 and was moved to another suite. An inspection three days later discovered the insects.

Weeks later, a guest at Park MGM reported bed bugs to managers there on Aug. 14. The next day the room was inspected, and it tested positive.

KLAS made several unsuccessful attempts to get a comment from the hotels.

The hotel has the ultimate responsibility, period, because nobody is going to be bringing bedbugs in purposely, Brian Virag, a bed bug attorney based in Southern California, said.

Virag said hotel housekeeping is trained to look for these insects, but guests should be proactive.

You really need to be checking between the baseboard and the mattress because bed bugs dont like a whole lot of commotion, Virag said.

He added that people should avoid placing their luggage on beds or near carpeting.

You do have rights in a hotel to have a safe, habitable space to sleep, he noted.

MGM International Resorts owns Park MGM, and they previously told KLAS in a statement, We have comprehensive procedures in place to address and resolve any issue that may arise.

The Southern Nevada Health District previously told KLAS that if a hotel addresses bed bugs in a room once it learns of them, there will not be a fine assessed against the hotel. If there are ongoing complaints and the hotel does not provide adequate pest control, the hotel can be fined.

7 ways to prevent bed bugs from infesting your home – Tom’s Guide

Since a surge of bed bug infestations in Paris and reports about a "global resurgence," concerns of bed bugs have been on the rise. But, truth be told, these blood-sucking insects have always been around, so theyre something were continually wary of, particularly when traveling.

If youre wondering why bed bugs are such an alarming prospect, theres a couple of reasons. First, its very easy to unknowingly carry them into your home just take a look at 5 ways bed bugs can invade your home. And once theyre in, theyre immensely difficult to get rid of. Repeat applications are usually necessary to fully eradicate them, which can take months. Secondly, the thought that they feed on your blood while you sleep isnt a pleasant one, which can lead to skin irritations and infections.

So what can you do to prevent bed bugs? Thankfully, there are steps you can take to stop these bugs from being introduced to your home as well as methods to keep the numbers contained should they find their way in. Note that, in the case of the latter, you will still likely need to kill any remaining bed bugs see how to get rid of bed bugs for details on the best methods.

The following tips are good practice to follow if you have concerns about bed bugs; giving you peace of mind that you can prevent, as well as control and contain a potential infestation, if necessary.

The first and likely most popular method of bed bug control is to invest in a zipped bed bug-proof mattress cover. Bed bugs generally live in and around our mattresses this is an ideal spot considering they feed on us while we rest. So they can often be found hidden in crevices, even in the best mattresses. A mattress cover essentially contains the mattress completely (including the top and bottom and all four sides), so no more bed bugs can find their way in, and those trapped inside will eventually die. An example of this would be this Utopia Bedding Zippered Mattress Encasement Full ($21, Amazon).

But, bear in mind that bed bugs can live in all sorts of spaces around your bed, not just your mattress. They can be found in cracks in the walls, in the joints of your furniture and around the carpet's edge, so more preventive measures are a good idea. For instance, you can buy a box-spring protector (another place theyre often found) and bed bug traps which sit under the bed frame legs to stop them climbing, such as Bed Bug Interceptors ($27, Amazon).

If your bedroom is full of clutter, youre not helping yourself when facing bed bugs. In fact, youre providing more places to hide, making the environment all the more suitable. Bed bugs prefer to stay out of sight while were active, so if theres boxes or clothes permanently strewn across the floor, youre supplying additional shelter as well as spaces to lay eggs.

Even if your room doesnt appear obviously cluttered, always check under your bed. If youve got cardboard boxes stored here, youre giving the bed bugs a prime position to hide close to where you sleep. Bed bugs will happily situate themselves in cardboard boxes because theyre dark and often undisturbed. And seeing that they can live for up to 400 days without feeding, according to the UC IPM, even old cardboard boxes can contain the threat of bed bugs. Switch to plastic, sealed containers instead, such as these IRIS USA 12 Quart Stack & Pull Box ($26, Amazon), and keep the underside of your bed clear.

A clean house is just as likely to suffer from a bed bug infestation as a dirty one, but certain chores will reduce their numbers. For instance, vacuuming your floors, furniture and mattress with one of the best vacuum cleaners will pick up rogue bed bugs. This wont kill them though, so you need to empty the canister between each run and do so carefully. Empty the contents immediately into a sealed plastic bag, and place it straight into the outdoor trash can. Vacuum regularly if youre in the midst of eradicating bed bugs at least once a week.

Heat is a well known method for killing bed bugs, and so a steam cleaner, such as this Dupray Neat Steam Cleaner Powerful Multipurpose Portable Heavy Duty Steamer ($149, Amazon) can be a handy investment. You can use this to steam your carpets and upholstery around the home, killing any immediate bed bugs in your path. Just keep in mind that the temperature needs to reach 130F with a gentle air flow otherwise you will just blow the bed bugs away.

Washing your bed linens, the bedding itself (pillows included) and any other fabrics on the highest temperature allowed in the best washing machines can also kill bed bugs. Thats why its a good idea to wash all items from your suitcase as soon as you return home from traveling. The temperature of the wash needs to be at least 140F for 90 minutes to be effective, followed by drying on the highest temperature allowed for 30 minutes. Keep infested items sealed in plastic bags until youre ready to wash them. If the items cant tolerate a hot wash, steaming them is another option.

If you know youve got bed bugs in your home, youre going to want to limit their spreading as much as possible while you work on eliminating them. There are several ways bed bugs can travel, but they tend to cling to inanimate fabrics, which is why our suitcases are often hotspots. They wont usually hang onto the clothes youre physically wearing because the movement is too aggressive and theyre not a fan of such intense heat. But, any inanimate fabrics or those you carry alongside are certainly at risk.

Considering this, if you know the source, make sure alternative textiles don't come into contact with those areas. For instance, dont let freshly laundered clothes sit on your carpet. As soon as bed bugs hitch a ride, they could find their way into your dresser. Watch that your bedding doesnt touch the floor for the same reason otherwise, the aforementioned bed bug traps will be pointless. Keep infested areas separated from traveling items where possible, and vice versa, to limit bed bugs spreading to new areas. This is also why its a good idea to hang guests' coats on a hook near your door rather than draped on any beds. Its all too easy for bed bugs to spread from one fabric to another.

Essential oils have many uses in terms of bug control. These natural fragrances can overwhelm and repel a number of pests, including rodents, mosquitoes and ants. But, they have their uses in terms of bed bugs too. In fact, a study by Purdue University found that certain essential oils could even kill bed bugs when applied directly. 15 different types of oil were tested.

All of the chemicals were effective when applied directly to the bed bugs, though the amount needed to kill them varied. Carvacrol, derived from oregano and thyme; thymol (thyme); citronellic acid (lemongrass); and eugenol (clove) were most effective. When tested as fumigants, thymol, carvacrol, linalool (common in basil) and camphor (camphor tree) were most effective.

Keep in mind that these are by no means as effective as a chemical equivalent. In fact, the study found that killing a bed bug required 70,000 times more of the best performing oil compared to a relevant insecticide. But, considering essential oils still have an impact, its nice to know that a natural alternative to chemicals is available to prevent bed bugs, even if only a little. Rubbing alcohol is another alternative you can spray directly on bed bugs to kill them on sight just keep in mind you still need to deal with any remaining eggs.

Its all too common to bring bed bugs home with you when you travel, so its a good idea to know what to look for when you check into a hotel room. There are several signs of bed bugs including egg shells, shed skins, ink-like spots of feces and, of course, the bugs themselves. A musty smell may also be present. Inspect the mattress thoroughly, checking cracks, crevices and seams. Use a travel flashlight if you have one. Check around the headboard as well as any surrounding fabrics too, such as cushions and curtains.

If you suspect bed bugs, inform the hotel staff immediately. You will need to vacate the room so it can be inspected and cleaned. Your luggage may need to be cleaned as well if it was exposed. When you return home from your travels, you can also inspect your luggage for bed bugs before bringing it inside to be vigilant. You could alternatively unpack it in the bathroom, shaking clothes over your tub before washing. Keep in mind hotels arent the only establishments where bed bugs are common: shared laundry facilities, hospitals and universities are all hotspots.

If you share a wall with neighbors, bed bugs may well be able to travel between the properties too. This is because they can fit through tiny cracks and gaps and come out the other side, making their way in through light switches as well as power outlets. With this in mind its a good idea to caulk and seal any unnecessary cracks in the walls. You can also buy outlet covers to seal those if neighbors inform you that bed bugs are present, an example being these outlet covers ($7, Amazon).

Be extra vigilant and keep an eye out for bed bugs if your neighbor has them. As theyre eradicated, theyre likely to move to another available environment. Make sure you don't bring the bed bugs in with you if you share a communal space too, such as a hallway. Dont leave items on the floor, and check your shoes and clothes as you enter. Refrain from physical contact with the neighbor and reach out to your property manager to confirm if a formal inspection or further action is needed with your unit.

Readers sound off on U.S. support for Israel, bed bugs and a Black … – New York Daily News

We pay lip service to suffering that we finance

Los Altos, Calif.: It is essential to address the ongoing violence in Israel and its root causes. The violence that has erupted between Hamas and Israel, resulting in the loss of innocent lives, highlights the urgent need for a paradigm shift in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It has been fueled by decades of unconditional U.S. support in terms of money and weapons, which has led to seething Palestinian resentment of apartheid policies and brutal occupation. The culmination is the current dire situation, with Gaza under siege and the continued oppression of the Palestinian people.

Historian Rashid Khalidi aptly describes the situation as Palestinians living under incredible oppression. The blockade of Gaza has been a pressure cooker. It was only a matter of time before it erupted. The recent pledge of more military aid and munitions to Israel, coupled with the movement of U.S. warships towards the region, is a deeply troubling response. Sending more arms to Israel will only add fuel to an already raging inferno. Instead, the U.S. should prioritize defusing the situation and seeking a just and lasting peace.

The outpouring of support for Palestinians across the Middle East underscores the fact that the Palestinian cause remains a deeply felt rallying cry in the region. Diplomatic normalization agreements between Israel and Arab governments, such as the Abraham Accords, will do little to change this reality. As long as the conflict remains unresolved, stability in the Middle East will remain elusive.

It is crucial that the international community takes immediate action to address the root causes of the violence. The first step must be to lift the siege of Gaza and end the brutal occupation. Accountability for militant settler violence should also be demanded. Jagjit Singh

Utica, N.Y.: As we have all seen, bombing Gaza to rubble has not worked out so well in the past. Heres an idea for Israel to consider: How about not bombing Gaza, or going in at all? How about offering an immediate ceasefire and a promise to lift the blockade of Gaza upon the safe return of every hostage? Of course, Israel must hunt down the brutal Hamas murderers. However, she should also provide desperately needed sustenance to the Palestinian people. Its a sad truth that these poor people have been mistreated by Israel, but its also true that they have been left to wallow in squalor and misery by all of their obscenely wealthy neighbors. We think its time for Israel to do something different. How about waging peace? Jeff and Joan Ganeles

Manhattan: Voicer Betty Ussach apparently thinks Israel is making what she terms a disproportionate response to aggression. I assume she is referring to Israels response to the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel. So, I guess she describes deliberate murder of babies, rapes of women and abduction of people, including the elderly, ill and children, as aggression rather than terrorism. War is horrible and no one I know wants to see innocent children or adults suffer on either side. However, Hamas terrorism must be ended! Sue Deutsch

Kew Gardens: The prime minister of Israel said the repercussions his nation will rain on Gaza will be felt for generations. Sen. Cory Booker said Hamas knew exactly what the repercussions would be for its attack on Israel without concern for the Palestinians and Palestinian-Americans in Gaza. He further stated that Hamas only objective is to kill Jews. If that is the case, then the leadership of Hamas and most of its membership might not even be in Gaza and were probably gone before their military cadre invaded Israel. However, the photographs, videos and interviews with Gaza residents attesting to the horrors they endure during the Israeli Defense Forces bombardment and incursion will provide Hamas with a major recruitment tool. Unfortunately, the repercussions will be felt for generations. As American author Raymond E. Feist stated, Never underestimate the potential for human stupidity when wealth and power are at stake. Glenn Hayes

Brooklyn: Once again, Leonard Greene misunderstands or misrepresents an event or situation (Peaceniks, show yourselves! column, Oct. 22). In his statement describing the recent terrorist attacks in Israel where a hospital was blown up and little kids have been kidnapped by murderous terrorists he casually misrepresents the gravity and depravity of the situation. Hamas terrorists breached the Israeli border, kidnapped and murdered hundreds of teens and 20-somethings at a concert, then paraded bodies through the streets. They also kidnapped and murdered many older people. The hospital you refer to as being blown up was not. A misfired terrorist rocket landed in its parking lot. But dont worry, youre not alone on that one. The New York Times also incorrectly reported that event as the IDF striking a hospital in Gaza. Hopefully, that helps explain the lack of peaceniks in tie-dyed T-shirts and why our government stands with Israel. Jack Flynn

Amityville, L.I.: I found it amazing and odd that new NYPD Commissioner Eddie Caban, a man, was lauded for shaping his departments leadership team to his liking. Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, a woman, was not afforded the same. She was met with disdain, ridicule and lawsuits. Barbara Reynolds

Oak Ridge, N.J.: Voicer Lenzy Kelley complains about gas prices going down. Its one of two things: Lenzy has a ton of money invested in oil futures or he needs to get a mental health checkup. I hope gas is $4 a gallon by Thanksgiving so I can read you crying in the Voice of the People, Why, why, why? Jim Heimbuch

Whitsett, N.C.: Bed bugs are spreading again. Its in France now but also in Las Vegas hotels. As people travel, so do those insects. Always check your things before bringing them into your car or home. Bed bugs dont like lavender, so its a repellent. They sell bed bug sprays in stores. Knowledge is power. Deonia Neveu

Madison, Wisc.: As a conservative, a person of color and an immigrant, I would be thrilled to see Byron Donalds become the first African-American speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. Americas commitment to diversity must be steadfast. With people from all over the world coming to the United States for a better life, our legislative branch of government must also be diverse. I am happy to see growing diversity in Congress. It is wonderful to see Donalds, a hard-working member of Congress from Florida, announcing his candidacy for the speakership. I hope Republicans in Washington will unite to elect him. Tawsif Anam

Staten Island: Vote for Sen. Bob Menendez, who has had a black cloud over his head for several years. I can only guess that the people of New Jersey vote for a party, not the person. This type of voting is what is hurting our country. With that said, will it change peoples minds when they go out to vote? I can only hope it does. ThomasBell

Bronx: Donald Trump and his extreme MAGA supporters keep saying theres a witch hunt against him. Well, a thought came to mind: What if he was splashed with water? If he melts (he wont), then he may have a point. Lets cut the nonsense already! There is no witch hunt. This is about accountability for an individual who has spent years committing despicable actions, both criminal and unethical, while avoiding consequences with lies and threats. He is finally facing accountability with a multitude of civil lawsuits, criminal indictments and sanctions for violating court orders. Michael S. Wilbekin

Holliswood: To Voicer Joe Ewansky: No, its not cool for a kid to bring a gun to school. But the crux of my letter is that its a rarity, as the numbers provided in the Daily News editorial (K-12 gauge, Oct. 15) bear out (1,150 guns across 130,930 schools in 50 states during the course of one year). Your child is much more likely to get hit by a car going to or coming from school than ever encountering a gun at school. Facts are stubborn things. Stop letting yourself be gaslit. Gregory W. Chupa

Worried about bed bugs coming to the UK? Chances are they are … – The Student

Paris is currently facing an infestation of bed bugs with much of Europe concerned that they could be next.

The appearance of bed bugs began in Paris hotels, trains, and public spaces with fears they could be spreading through clothing and luggage.

The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) estimates that more than 10 per cent of French households were infested by bed bugs between 2017 and 2022.

Infestations are on the rise however, due to increased travel and the bed bugs increasing resistance to insecticides.

The Rugby World Cup and upcoming Summer Olympics, alongside other travel between the UK and Paris, have led to concerns that Paris infestation may spread to UK cities.

In an interview with PoliticsJOE, London Mayor Sadiq Khan said that the situation in Paris is: a real source of concern, but remained adamant that the city is taking adequate precautions to ward off bed bugs.

Some experts suggest that most major cities in the UK are already quietly battling bed bug infestations.

David Cain, microbiologist and founder of Bed Bugs Ltd., told Sky News: I think theres probably a similar level of issue in London as there is in Paris at present.

A representative from the City of Edinburgh Councils pest control office suggests that, despite no recent increases in bed bug activity, the bugs remain very prevalent in the city.

The representative said: [Bed bugs] have been here for many years and we have been going to many properties [to treat infestations], as this is a common pest we deal with at least every month.

Infestations are difficult to prevent after encountering bed bugs.

The British Pest Control Association suggests avoiding contact by thoroughly checking for signs of bed bugs before moving into a new accommodation.

Signs can include clusters of small brown spots on furniture or mattresses, small white eggshells, or sightings of the bugs themselves.

Some swear by home remedies for bed bug infestations, but the BPCA suggests calling in a professional pest control company as soon as possible.

Bed bugs on vacay? Heres how to keep them from hitching a ride back home with you – AOL

Theyre coming. And theyre coming to ruin your vacation and your sleep.

Bed bugs.

The ugly little pests that can cause huge infestations.

Currently, there are reports of a huge bed bug infestation in Paris and this news is not only concerning to residents of the city, but to travelers as well.

If you have a vacation planned soon, dont fret. Heres a breakdown of how to spot bed bugs, prevention and cities where they are most common.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD), Most people get bed bugs while traveling. Bed bugs are tiny insects that feed on human blood. They can crawl into a suitcase or onto clothing unnoticed.

However, it is possible to spot them. Here are some tips from AAD:

When you walk into the room or cabin, take a deep breath. Do you notice a sweet or musty odor? If there is a heavy infestation, you may notice this smell. Bed bugs produce chemicals to help them communicate.

Next, check the bed. Look carefully at the blankets, sheets, pillows and mattress pad. Then, check the mattress and box spring: Do you see blackish specks, which could be bed bug excrement? Specks of blood anywhere, especially near seams? Shell-like remains on the bed, bedding or furniture? Bed bugs have an outer shell that they shed and leave behind as they grow.

Youll also want to check all upholstered furniture. While checking, you may see bed bugs or their eggs. A bed bug is about the size of an apple seed.

If you find signs of bed bugs, you should immediately request another room or cabin. The other room should not be near the current room.

When you enter your room or cabin for the first time, place your suitcase on the luggage rack. If the room has bed bugs, they can crawl unnoticed from the bed or floor to your suitcase.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Since bed bugs are only about the width of a credit card, they can squeeze into really small hiding spots. If a crack will hold a credit card, it could hide a bed bug.

The EPA has a few specific ways to spot the ones that are harder to see:

Check in the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, in the folds of curtains

Check in drawer joints

Check electrical receptacles and appliances

Look under loose wall paper and wall hangings

Look at the junction where the wall and the ceiling meet

Even look in the head of a screw

According to PestWorld.org: 97% of pest professionals have treated bed bugs in the past year and a majority of them (69%) say that bed bug problems are rising.

So, how can you prevent them from invading your home or ruining your vacation? Heres what Orkin says.

At home:

Inspect your home for signs of bed bugs regularly. Check the places where bed bugs hide during the day, including mattress tags and seams, and behind baseboards, headboards, electrical outlets and picture frames. Inspect when you move in, after a trip, when a service worker visits or after guests stay overnight.

Decrease clutter around your home to make it easier to spot bed bugs on your own or during professional inspections.

Examine all secondhand furniture before bringing it inside your home.

When traveling use the SLEEP method:

Survey the hotel room for signs of an infestation. Be on the lookout for tiny, ink-colored stains on mattress seams, in soft furniture and behind headboards.

Lift and look in bed bug hiding spots: the mattress, box spring and other furniture, as well as behind baseboards, pictures and even torn wallpaper.

Elevate luggage away from the bed and wall. The safest places are in the bathroom or on counters.

Examine your luggage carefully while repacking and once you return home from a trip. Always store luggage away from the bed.

Place all dryer-safe clothing from your luggage in the dryer for at least 30-45 minutes at the highest setting after you return home.

If youre looking to travel to one of these cities, it may be best to do some research about where you are planning to stay. Or perhaps add them to a do not travel list. Youve been warned.

In fact, according to Orkins list of Top 50 Bed Bug Cities, Ohio cities dominate the list. Six Ohio cities are listed: Cleveland-Akron, Columbus, Cincinnati, Youngstown, Dayton and Toledo. Yikes.

Cleveland-Akron was ranked number four on the list, followed by Columbus, Ohio at number 10, Cincinnati at number 13, Youngstown was ranked 27th, Dayton is listed at 34 and Toledo is listed at number 38.

Atlanta, Georgia made the list at number 16.

Here are the top ten:

Chicago

New York

Philadelphia

Cleveland-Akron, Ohio

Los Angeles

Detroit

Indianapolis

Baltimore

Washington, D.C.

Columbus, Ohio
