Woman shares natural home remedy to ‘eliminate’ bed bugs – Yahoo News UK

Bed bugs, the tiny critters that lurk in the crevices of beds and come out at night for a blood meal, can be a real nuisance. They're drawn to exposed skin but their bites are usually painless, though they can cause irritation and itching.

The stigma attached to these pests often leads to distress for those who find them in their homes, making it crucial to address the infestation promptly. Sarah Dempsey, a laundry expert from myjobquote.co.uk, has offered up four "effective" and "natural" methods to eliminate bed bugs, reports the Express.

Firstly, washing your bedding is a key step in tackling a bed bug problem. Sarah advises: "Washing your bedding at a high temperature is an effective way to get rid of bed bugs. The heat is a great way to eradicate the bed bugs."

However, she cautions that washing alone might not be the ultimate fix. She elaborates: "It can certainly reduce the number of bed bugs in your home but it is not always enough to completely remove them."

For best results, Sarah recommends a thorough approach: "Strip your bedding and place it straight into a bin bag. Then, carry the bin bag to the washing machine and empty your bedding into the machine. Wash the bedding at a high temperature on a cycle of at least 90 minutes or more."

The second tip involves freezing the pests out, which will be detailed further. Aside from washing bedding, the laundry expert recommended that households could freeze them to eradicate the pests and their eggs.

She explained: "Freezing infested items is a great way to get rid of bed bugs. As with many other home remedies, this may not be a complete solution to removing bed bugs. However, it is a very effective way to greatly reduce the number of bed bugs in the home."

"Simply place bedding, pillowcases, and any other infested items in the freezer and leave them in there for around a week."

The extreme cold is lethal to bed bugs, so placing fabrics in a plastic bag and into the freezer can be an effective measure. Diatomaceous earth is another excellent natural method for exterminating and deterring bed bugs. It's derived from fossilised aquatic organisms known as diatoms, which consist largely of silicon dioxide.

This substance not only kills the bugs but also serves as a physical deterrent when applied to crevices and openings. While diatomaceous earth doesn't provide immediate results, typically taking seven to 14 days to kill the bugs, it is highly efficient and safe for non-toxic handling.

Sarah regards diatomaceous earth as "one of the most effective methods" for "eliminating" bed bugs.

She advised: "When trying to eradicate bed bugs, it's best to combine this method with other home remedies for optimum results."

"Apply a fine amount of diatomaceous earth around the seams of your bed frame, mattress, and furniture. This method works by causing the bed bugs to perish from dehydration."

4. Vacuum the home thoroughly.

Once households have physically searched for the bugs, use a strong vacuum to clean the entire area.

It is best to use a narrow vacuum nozzle to reach in-between the gaps, the mattress, bed frame and corners - this will help remove the eggs and any remaining bugs.

The expert noted: "Vacuuming is a very effective way to control a bed bug infestation. Unlike many other home remedies, vacuuming can help to remove adult bed bugs, nymphs, and eggs."

"It's important to remember to empty the vacuum in an outside bin to help reduce the chances of them returning."

"Vacuuming won't always completely get rid of the bed bugs. However, it is an effective method to help greatly reduce the numbers."

"Vacuum your entire home thoroughly. Pay very close attention to the areas where the bed bugs are most prevalent such as between wall joints and underneath furniture. Once you've completed the vacuuming, make sure you empty all of the contents of the vacuum in an outside bin."

A man held in a disgusting Georgia jail cell died after being ‘eaten alive’ by insects and bed bugs, his family says – Yahoo News Canada

A man died inside of a Georgia jail cell after he was "eaten alive" by bed bugs, his family alleges.

Lashawn Thompson was found dead at the Fulton County Jail in September 2022.

Thompson's cell "was not fit for a diseased animal," a lawyer for the man's family said.

A 35-year-old man died inside of a filthy Georgia jail cell after being "eaten alive" by insects and bed bugs, an attorney for the victim's family has alleged.

"It's just horrible," Michael Harper, a lawyer for the family of Lashawn Thompson, told Insider on Friday of the young man's death.

Thompson was discovered dead inside a disgusting cell at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 13, 2022 three months after he was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor simple battery, Harper said.

While he was held at the lockup, officers moved Thompson to the jail's psychiatric wing after they determined he had a mental illness, Harper said.

"They left him there essentially," Harper told Insider. "And they had a plan to take him to the medical observation unit, but their plan never happened, and they found him dead, eaten by these bed bugs."

Harper released graphic photos showing Thompson's body and the horrific conditions of his jail cell on Wednesday along with what he said was a report from the Fulton County medical examiner that described a "severe bed bug infestation" in Thompson's cell.

"There were no obvious signs of trauma found about the decedent's body," the purported medical examiner's report said. "The decedent's body was covered in bed bugs."

The medical examiner ruled Thompson's cause and manner of death as "undetermined," according to the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, which runs the jail.

Harper, citing jail records, alleged that jail staffers noticed that Thompson was "deteriorating" but did nothing to help him.

"They literally watched his health decline until he died," Harper said in a statement. He alleged that Thompson's jail cell "was not fit for a diseased animal."

"He did not deserve this," Harper continued. "Someone has to be held accountable for his death."

The Fulton County Sheriff's Office said in a statement provided to Insider on Friday that it has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Thompson's death.

Once the investigation is complete, Sheriff Patrick Labat will make an official request for review by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations "to determine whether any criminal charges are warranted in this case," the statement said.

"The health, well-being, and security of inmates in our care is our top priority. It's no secret that the dilapidated and rapidly eroding conditions of the current facility make it incredibly difficult to meet the goal of providing a safe, clean, well-maintained, and healthy environment for all inmates and staff," the statement continued.

It added, "Without making any explicit statements about Mr. Thompson's health, it's fair to say that this is one of many cases that illustrate the desperate need for expanded and better mental health services."

"That is precisely why Sheriff Labat continues to call [for] building a new Fulton County Jail and Criminal Justice Complex which will provide humane care in a safe and clean environment that offers mental health and other services that provide a strong foundation for rehabilitation," the statement said.

Brad McCrae, Thompson's brother, told reporters on Wednesday that the photos of his sibling's body were "heartbreaking," "hard to look at," and reminded him of the 1955 teen lynching victim Emmett Till.

"They're horrified," Harper told Insider of Thompson's family. "Can you imagine seeing these photos and knowing what happened to your loved one to die like that? They're just sick about it."

Thompson's family is now calling for a criminal investigation into Thompson's death and for the jail to be closed and replaced with a new facility.

The family is also planning to file a lawsuit against the jail, Harper told Insider.

Florida Crawling With Bed Bugs, 3 Cities Among Most Infested – newyorkschooltalk.org – newyorkschooltalk.org

Florida, known for its sunny beaches and warm climate, has unfortunately earned another distinction: being home to some of the worst bed bug infestations in the United States. In a recent report by Orkin, three Florida cities made it onto the list of the top 50 bed bug-infested metro areas. Lets delve into the details and explore the implications of this unwelcome ranking.

Orkins report is based on treatment data from metro areas where they performed the most bed bug treatments between December 1, 2022, and November 30, 2023. The ranking includes both residential and commercial treatments. Here are the Florida cities that found themselves among the top 50:

Here are the key signs of a bed bug infestation:

1. Bed bug bites Flat, red welts in zigzag lines, straight rows, or small clusters that may appear after bed bugs feed on human blood. The bites are irritating and can lead to bleeding and secondary infection if scratched.

2. Blood stains Small rust-colored spots on bedding and clothing caused by bed bugs feeding on blood between 5-7 days whenever a host is present.

3. Fecal spots Dark brown or black spots of digested blood that resemble felt-tipped marker stains on fabrics and raised bumps on solid surfaces.

4. Bed bug shells or molted skins Empty exoskeletons shed by bed bugs as they grow through five nymphal stages to maturity.

5. Bed bug eggs Tiny, pearl-white eggs about the size of a pinhead, often found in clusters.

6. Live bed bugs Reddish-brown, wingless adults about the size of an apple seed, or smaller translucent nymphs.

7. Sweet, musty odor An unpleasant, sweet, sickly scent produced by bed bug aggregations.

Bed bugs typically hide in mattress seams, bed frames, furniture, carpets, baseboards and bedroom clutter during the day. Finding any of these signs, especially live bed bugs or their eggs, is a clear indication of an infestation that requires professional treatment.

Here are some effective ways to prevent bed bug infestations:

Inspect Secondhand Items- Carefully inspect secondhand furniture, beds, and couches for any signs of bed bug infestation before bringing them into your home.

Use Protective Mattress Covers- Use a protective cover that encases mattresses and box springs to eliminate hiding spots. The light color makes bed bugs easier to spot.

Consider using a mattress cover that has been pre-treated with pesticide to control bed bugs.

Reduce Clutter- Reduce clutter in your home to minimize hiding places for bed bugs.

Vacuum Frequently- Vacuum frequently to remove any bed bugs that may have hitchhiked into your home.

Be Vigilant When Traveling- When staying away from home, avoid putting your luggage on the bed. Use a luggage rack or keep it in the bathroom.

Inspect your hotel room for signs of bed bugs, including the bedding, mattress seams, and furniture

Upon returning home, wash and dry all your clothes on high heat.

Isolate Your Unit If you live in a multi-family home, install door sweeps on the bottom of doors to discourage bed bugs from moving into your unit.

Seal cracks and crevices around baseboards, light sockets, and other entry points to prevent bed bugs from moving through wall voids.

Use Heat Treatment- Consider purchasing a portable heating chamber to treat items that may have bed bugs.

By implementing these prevention strategies, you can significantly reduce the risk of bringing bed bugs into your home and avoid the hassle and expense of an infestation. However, if you do suspect a bed bug problem, its crucial to act quickly and seek professional help if needed[2][5].

Floridas bed bug problem is a wake-up call for residents and visitors alike. Vigilance, early detection, and professional treatment are essential to combat these persistent pests.Lets hope that efforts to eradicate bed bugs continue to improve, ensuring a good nights sleep for everyone in the Sunshine State.

New Study Shows One North Dakota City Is Crawling With Bed Bugs – US 103.3

You probably grew up with your parents telling you, "Sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite."

Bed bugs were a common occurrence in America back in the early 1900s. They were then mostly eradicated with the advanced use of pesticides for a good share of the century. As more and more immigrants moved to America from third-world countries in the late 1900s and the early 20th century, we have once again seen a bed bug explosion in America.

Macro photo of a bed bug

According toAmerican Pest, bed bugs were a problem all the way back to the days of Ancient Rome.

How does someone get bed bugs? Do they just show up in your home from the outside? No, they like places where lots of people tend to gather. Hotels, airports, movie theaters, or in high-traffic business areas. They'll often hitch a ride in purses, luggage, or even your body. YIKES!

Bed bugs are opportunistic insects that come out at night to feed on the blood of their hosts. Talk about terrifying. They are extremely small and very difficult to spot. They like to hide in mattresses or in cracks in windows, floors, or walls close to their next victim. They can survive several months without a meal, which makes them even more difficult to eradicate.

Bed bugs breed like rabbits and a female can lay thousands of eggs over the course of her lifetime.

Store-bought insecticides rarely work, which means you'll need a professional. This will turn into an expensive proposition for your family too. Depending on the size of your home, you could be looking at a bill from several hundred dollars to over a thousand bucks.

Did you know there is an actual "Bed Bug Awareness Week?"

Yep, and it begins on June 2nd, 2024. Pest Gnome, in the spirit of the season, decided to come out with 2024's Worst Cities for Bed Bug Infestations.

They ranked the top 500 biggest United States cities based on three categories, number of accommodations, multi-unit residential buildings, and population density.

Only two cities in North Dakota made the Top 500 list and one of them is crawling with bed bugs ranking very high in the top 60 cities. Any guess on which city?

North Dakota's most infested bed bug city is none other than FARGO!

It came in at #59.

Bismarck also made the list but much further down in the top 500 coming in at #302.

Other notable cities in our neighboring states to make the list include:

Minneapolis, Minnesota at #24.

St. Paul, Minnesota at #43.

Bloomington, Minnesota at #112.

Rochester, Minnesota at #134.

Duluth, Minnesota at #149.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota at #168.

Plymouth, Minnesota at #184.

Woodbury, Minnesota at #194.

Even though we only had two cities in North Dakota make the top 500, don't let that fool you. Bed bugs are present in just about every North Dakota city. You have been warned.

Again, sleep tight after reading this, and don't let the bedbugs bite.
