ranked worst bed bug city in Canada | CTV News – CTV News Toronto

For the second year in a row, Toronto has been ranked as the worst city for bed bugs in Canada.

In a news release issued Monday, Orkin Canada revealed that Toronto was the city with the most service calls issued for bed bug treatments. The company named Toronto as Canada's worst city for bedbugs last year as well.

The findings are based on the number of commercial and residential bed bug treatments carried out by Orkin from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2021.

Of the five cities ranked as the worst for bed bugs, three of them are in Ontario. Toronto takes the top spot, while second place goes to Sudbury and fifth place goes to Oshawa. Vancouver ranked third and St. Johns, fourth.

A number of additional Ontario cities made the lower rankings, including Sault Ste. Marie, Windsor, Timmins, Ottawa, Mississauga, Etobicoke, North York, Whitby, Peterborough, Hamilton and North Bay.

While bed bugs may be an unpleasant discovery, Orkin says they are common and extremely efficient hitchhikers.

They can move easily across a room and climb onto luggage or anything left on a bed in just one night, the company said in its release.

To avoid a bed bug infestation, Orkin recommends not putting clothing or luggage on your bed, laundering clothes or furniture once they're brought into your home, and regularly inspecting your residence for signs of bed bugs, especially after travelling.

Bed bugs have a flat, broad, oval-shaped body, and are often dark brown and very small approximately four millimetres long. They are visible to the human eye.

Bed bugs in Vancouver: Here’s where the city ranks | CTV News – CTV News Vancouver

Two cities in B.C.'s Lower Mainland rank among the top in Canada when it comes to bed bugs, according to a pest control company.

Vancouver came in third in the 2021 list, which ranks major cities based on the number of related calls made to Orkin Canada.

Nearby Burnaby claimed the 25th spot.

Orkin said the worst spot in the country for the bugs the company calls "extremely effective hitchhikers" because of their tendency to travel across rooms and along with luggage.

Toronto took the top spot, followed by Sudbury, Ont.

Also in the top 10 were: St. John's; the Ontario cities of Oshawa and Scarborough; the New Brunswick cities of Moncton and Saint John; Winnipeg; and Edmonton.

The calls made in those cities were for both residential and commercial bed bug treatments.

Orkin offered its advice to reduce the spread of bed bugs, which often enter residential spaces through travel.

"Bed bugs thrive in dark, cool places with long-term access to humans," the company wrote in a news release. "They can also be found on airplane and train seats, in buses or in rental cars."

Orkin said it's rare to pick them up in those locations, but it is possible.

Where people are more likely to encounter the bugs is in hotels and motels. For those types of locations, Orkin suggested ensuring clothing and luggage are never put directly on the bed.

The company said travellers should use metal luggage racks, as the bugs can't easily climb up metal surfaces the way they can on walls and wooden furniture.

Orkin also recommends packing clothes, shoes and other items into plastic bags, which can keep bed bugs that have crawled into a suitcase from getting into the house on clothing.

Anyone checking for bed bugs should also look at books, cloth toiletry kits and other personal items where they may be hiding.

Orkin Canada releases its list of top bed bug cities

TORONTO, March 7, 2022 /CNW/ - Orkin Canada has released last year's annual list of the top bed buggiest cities in Canada. The rankings show that the overall number of bed bug sightings nationwide remained similar to the year prior, and remains below pre-pandemic levels.

The City of Toronto claimed the number 1 spot for the third year in a row. Vancouver went up to number 3 (from 4), St John's rose to number 4 (from 6), and Winnipeg dropped substantially, falling to number 9 (from 5).

The findings byOrkin Canadaare based on the number of commercial and residential bed bug treatments carried out by the company in 2021 (January 1 December 31).

The top 10 bed buggiest cities in Canada in 2021 are:

Travel bans, stay-at-home orders, and a general shift to working remotely have resulted in fewer hitch-hiking opportunities for these critters, and yet they have found a way to stick around. Bed bugs latch onto people, clothing, and furniture. All it can take is an airplane seat, hotel bed or even an office chair for these pesky bed bugs to invade your space.

Due to their ability to double in population about every 16 days, it will not be difficult for bed bugs to regain their grip on Canadians. With blood as their only food source, bed bugs mainly feed on humans, having their dinners usually between midnight and 5 a.m. These dedicated blood-feeding insects can travel up to 100-feet in search of a meal, which is quite a trek for these small but resilient creatures. As Canadians start to travel, whether to the office or on vacation, so too will bed bugs.

Concerned Canadians can keep their offense strong through proactiveprevention tips such as careful examination of furniture and clothing after guests leave your home, drying potentially infested bed linens or clothing on the highest heat setting, and sealing cracks in walls, trims, and bed frames. A pest management professional can also help manage problems should they arise.

These Canadian Cities Apparently Have The Most Bed Bugs & Ew, Just Ew – Narcity Canada

Bug-phobes be warned! While some Canadians will be no strangers to bugs, a new study has uncovered the cities in Canada with the most bed bugs and can we just say, ew?

According to pest control company Orkin, a whole bunch of Canadian cities actually have bed bug problems.

It determined the worst spots affected by looking at which places sought the most bed bug treatments between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, in both residential and commercial spaces.

Unsurprisingly, the most bed bug-ed out city in the country is also the biggest Toronto. After that, the list gets a little more surprising.

Number two on the list is Sudbury and then comes Vancouver.

In the fourth slot is St. John's, Newfoundland, then Oshawa, followed by Scarborough and Moncton. The final three in the top ten are Saint John, Winnipeg and Edmonton respectively.

Interestingly enough, the major population centre of Montreal is all the way down at 17th place on the list. Same with Calgary, at 18, and Halifax, at 23.

If you're feeling a little itchy after this news, Orkin has some great tips to help prevent bed bug infestation.

When travelling, always store your luggage on the hotel's metal luggage racks which they can't easily climb up and put your clothes and other things in plastic bags.

The experts also recommend not putting your clothes on the bed, because if the bed is infested with the little beasties, they make expert "hitch-hikers."

Bed bugs love dark and cool places, which means hotels and homes aren't the only place they can be found. It's rare, but you can even pick up bed bugs from places like bus, train and airplane seats and rental cars.

And with that, we wish you sweet dreams!
