Summer travel season is right around the corner and AAA is already predicting which vacation destinations will be hot picks for Idahoans in 2024. As you make your plans, we just want to give you a heads up that four of those destinations, including one in the Pacific Northwest, appear on a list of Americas Bed Bug Capitals.

The good news is that while these tiny bugs are absolutely repulsive, theyre more annoying than dangerous. According to the CDC, theres a good chance that if you were a bed bugs snack overnight you may not know that when you wake up. Bed bugs inject humans with anesthetic and an anticoagulant, so their bites are unlikely to wake you up and or leave behind blood marks. Within a couple of days, those bites may swell or become itchy, like a mosquito bite would.

That said, bed bug bites can be linked to more serious, non-visible symptoms like insomnia and anxiety.

Thats a good question and probably the whole reason youre reading this article to begin with. When you travel to an area known for high infestations of bed bugs, you risk bringing them home to YOUR house. Bed bugs have skinny flat bodies, so the number of places they can hide and hitch a ride is nearly infinite.

Theyll get into the seams of your luggage, folds of your clothes or inside a pillowcase on the pillow you brought from home. They can survive for a while without feeding, so theyll just hang out until you unpack. When you least expect it, theyll emerge, bite you again and start spreading in your bedding, furniture or other areas of your home.

This list is important to pay attention to because bed bugs arent prejudiced. You may feel like youll avoid them by booking a fancy five-star hotel, but the truth is theyre just as likely to infest luxury accommodations as they are homeless shelters or college dorm rooms.

Like we mentioned, these guys are tiny so spotting them with the naked eye isnt easy. The CDC says that not only are they known to hide in the areas listed above, they can also hide in cracks, crevices, indentations in headboards or behind wallpaper while they wait to feed. The most tell-tale sign that a room has a bed bug problem is rusty colored blood spots on the mattress or furniture. You may also find their molted exoskeletons or smell a sweet, must odor.

While spotting them with your own eyes can be difficult, some of them can get as large as the size of Lincolns head on a penny, so its not impossible.

And that brings us to Orkins annual bed bug report, which ranks cities based on the number of bed bug treatments they performed between December 1, 2022 and November 30, 2023.

Four of the cities on AAAs list of the most popular Memorial Day Destinations for Idahoans overlap with the bed bug list. Denver is the 10th most popular destination and its ranks #15 on the bed rug report.

Seattle ranks eighth in popularity and #44 for bed bugs.

Dreams of a Disney vacation make Orlando the fifth most popular destination for Idahoans, but the city ranks #46 for bed bugs.

Finally, what happens in Vegas may stay in Vegasexcept for bed bugs. Vegas is the #3 destination from Idahoans and just ended up on the bed bug report for the first time, ranking #35.

Planning a trip elsewhere? Here's a look at Orkin's full list to help you prepare to be on the look out for signs of bed bug infestations when you arrive at your hotel or Airbnb.

Every year the pest control gurus at Orkin put together a list of the Top 50 Bed Bug Destinations in the United States. Which areas do you travel to that you should take extra care to watch out for these blood-sucking insects? Let's countdown to the most bed-bug-riddled city in the United States.

EEK! Duluth Among List Of 2024’s Worst Cities For Bed Bugs – B105 Country

This might just give you the chills! Bed bugs areone of those things that make just about everybody cringe. The last thing we want after a long day of travel is to get in a bed infested with bed bugs.

While technically bed bugs can be found anywhere, there are a few places that should be on your radar right now.Pest Gnome just released a list of the worst cities for bed bugs this year.

Unfortunately, manyMinnesota cities made the cut.Sigh. The good news is thatnoneof them are represented in the top ten or top 100, so we have that going for us.However, one of these cities hits real close to home.

I was VERY surprised to see that Duluthwas so high up on the list. The good news is that we weren't anywhere close to the very top of the list, so we have that going for us. Duluth came in at number 149, which was comprised of the 500 biggest cities in the country.

Before you panic, know that this study only looked at three factors: number of accommodations, multi-unit residential buildings and population density. The study also factored in access to exterminators to get rid of those pesky things.

Minneapolis is the city that made the top 25 here, coming in as the 24thworst city for bed bugs in 2024.St. Paul can be found a little further down the list, coming in at number 43.

While it's not super surprising thatthese two big cities made the cut, what is surprising is the fact that a bunch of other lesser-known Minnesota cities also made the list, all of them in the top half.

You always have to take studies like this with a grain of salt because they only take so many factors into consideration. However, it isn't a bad idea to check for bed bugs next time you are passing through any of these places!

OKLAHOMA CITY -- With recent infestations across the country, many may be wondering how to know if bed bugs are in your home, and if so, how to get rid of them.

Bed bug inspections have become all too common for employees with Terminex.

"A year ago we were getting two to three calls a month. Now we are getting two or three calls a day," said Leo Williams, with Terminex. "What we are looking for is where the bed bugs like to hide."

Williams said that can essentially be anywhere but some of the key places include crevices, light sockets, behind picture frames, and of course in beds.

Ronnie Faulkner said the creepy crawlers began invading his apartment a little over a year ago. He said the only thing worse than the constant biting and sleepless nights has been the financial burden it has put on his family.

"We went through two complete sets of furniture, beds, couches, recliners even a TV," Faulker said.

At just one apartment complex in Southeast Oklahoma City, Williams said they found at least 10 units infested with bed bugs.

"These aren't dirty bugs. These aren't something you need to be embarrassed about. They are hitting everywhere and everybody. They don't need to worry about people thinking bad, just get them taken care of," William said. "There almost on the verge of getting it labeled a pandemic."

Williams said to get rid of bed bugs the typical bug sprays won't work. The only way to completely kill off the bug is having professionals like Terminex handle the problem.

According to Terminex, bed bugs at this point do not appear to carry any blood borne pathogens like mosquitoes or ticks.

There is a newsof another bed bug scare at Tulsa's Central Library downtown.

Library administrators have sent an internal email to staff members saying someone found part of a "suspicious" bug.

It's not clear what kind of bug it is, but in the email obtained by News On 6, officials say they are not taking any chances.

Oklahoma's only bed-bug sniffing dog, Ms Liberty Belle will go back into the library after hours on Saturday. Because it could alter her smell, the library will not treat any of the floors until the dog can make the rounds.

The Central Library at 400 Civic Center closed for several days in mid-July after a bed bug discovery on some furniture in the library's third floor.

A man held in a disgusting Georgia jail cell died after being ‘eaten alive’ by insects and bed bugs, his family says – Yahoo Singapore

A man died inside of a Georgia jail cell after he was "eaten alive" by bed bugs, his family alleges.

Lashawn Thompson was found dead at the Fulton County Jail in September 2022.

Thompson's cell "was not fit for a diseased animal," a lawyer for the man's family said.

A 35-year-old man died inside of a filthy Georgia jail cell after being "eaten alive" by insects and bed bugs, an attorney for the victim's family has alleged.

"It's just horrible," Michael Harper, a lawyer for the family of Lashawn Thompson, told Insider on Friday of the young man's death.

Thompson was discovered dead inside a disgusting cell at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 13, 2022 three months after he was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor simple battery, Harper said.

While he was held at the lockup, officers moved Thompson to the jail's psychiatric wing after they determined he had a mental illness, Harper said.

"They left him there essentially," Harper told Insider. "And they had a plan to take him to the medical observation unit, but their plan never happened, and they found him dead, eaten by these bed bugs."

Harper released graphic photos showing Thompson's body and the horrific conditions of his jail cell on Wednesday along with what he said was a report from the Fulton County medical examiner that described a "severe bed bug infestation" in Thompson's cell.

"There were no obvious signs of trauma found about the decedent's body," the purported medical examiner's report said. "The decedent's body was covered in bed bugs."

The medical examiner ruled Thompson's cause and manner of death as "undetermined," according to the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, which runs the jail.

Harper, citing jail records, alleged that jail staffers noticed that Thompson was "deteriorating" but did nothing to help him.

"They literally watched his health decline until he died," Harper said in a statement. He alleged that Thompson's jail cell "was not fit for a diseased animal."

"He did not deserve this," Harper continued. "Someone has to be held accountable for his death."

The Fulton County Sheriff's Office said in a statement provided to Insider on Friday that it has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Thompson's death.

Once the investigation is complete, Sheriff Patrick Labat will make an official request for review by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations "to determine whether any criminal charges are warranted in this case," the statement said.

"The health, well-being, and security of inmates in our care is our top priority. It's no secret that the dilapidated and rapidly eroding conditions of the current facility make it incredibly difficult to meet the goal of providing a safe, clean, well-maintained, and healthy environment for all inmates and staff," the statement continued.

It added, "Without making any explicit statements about Mr. Thompson's health, it's fair to say that this is one of many cases that illustrate the desperate need for expanded and better mental health services."

"That is precisely why Sheriff Labat continues to call [for] building a new Fulton County Jail and Criminal Justice Complex which will provide humane care in a safe and clean environment that offers mental health and other services that provide a strong foundation for rehabilitation," the statement said.

Brad McCrae, Thompson's brother, told reporters on Wednesday that the photos of his sibling's body were "heartbreaking," "hard to look at," and reminded him of the 1955 teen lynching victim Emmett Till.

"They're horrified," Harper told Insider of Thompson's family. "Can you imagine seeing these photos and knowing what happened to your loved one to die like that? They're just sick about it."

Thompson's family is now calling for a criminal investigation into Thompson's death and for the jail to be closed and replaced with a new facility.

The family is also planning to file a lawsuit against the jail, Harper told Insider.
