Bed bugs are increasing. Where does your city rank? – ConsumerAffairs

Just about every city in America has something it can claim that its got the best of. But the last thing a local chamber of commerce would like to advertise is that its got more bed bugs than anyplace else!

Now, on top of its hotdogs and pizza, the Bulls and the Bears, and a history full of gangsters, Chicago can boast that it is the worst city in America for bed bugs, according to an annualstudy from Orkin.

New Yorkers and Philadelphians don't have much to cheer about, either. New York has the second-worst bed bug problem and Philadelphia is third.

The problem is increasing in Greensboro, N.C. That metrogained the most ground this year, moving up 25 spots, followed by Milwaukee (#25) and Tampa (#31).

The only two towns in the U.S. that can feel good aboutthe results of this study are Louisville and Lexington, Ky.,which finished last. Maybe bed bugs dont like bourbon.

Heres the whole list of bed bug-infested cities based on treatment data from the metro areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments from Dec. 1, 2022 Nov. 30, 2023. The ranking includes both residential and commercial treatments.

Paris has had time to work on its bed bug program, but according to reports, the punaise de lit (bed bug) situation is getting worse there instead of better like 65% worse. according to Frances Union Chamber of Insect Control.

Thats a headache and a half for the most visited city in the world, whose hoteliers have been searching for something positive for the 15 million people coming to town for the Olympics.

"While the bed bug infestations in Paris have made travelers more conscious of the pests in hotels while traveling internationally, it is also important to take precautions at home, said Ben Hottel, Orkin entomologist.

Second-hand items such as clothing and furniture are also common bed bug hiding places, allowing pests an opportunity to hitch a ride home with new consumers. Examining any new items before they enter your home will help to catch a bed bug infestation sooner, rather than later.

If you live in one of the markets where bed bugs rule, it may be a good idea to double-check to see what levels of infestation you may or may not have. ConsumerAffairs has a complete guide to pest control including reader reviews and ratings available here.

Georgia City Named Among The ‘Worst Cities For Bed Bugs’ In The U.S. | 94.9 The Bull – 94.9 The Bull

If you're squeamish about bugs or tiny crawling critters, you may want to look away. A new report lists a city in Georgia as one of the worst places in America for bed bugs.

Pest control company Orkin released its annual list of the U.S. cities with the most reported cases of bed bugs, using data gathered from December 1, 2022 to November 30, 2023, of cities with the most bed bug treatments. One city in the Peach State is among the worst in the country for bed bugs: Atlanta. Georgia's capital city ranked No. 13 overall, rising three places on the list compared to last year's rankings.

Bed bugs are typically around 3/16 inch long and red to dark brown in color and are mostly nocturnal, coming out at night to "take blood meals from sleeping humans," the site states. A bed bug fiasco in Paris last year had people more concerned than ever about the pests. Orkin entomologist Ben Hottel notes that while people may be aware of the bugs while traveling, it's important that they also take precautions at home to ensure their space stays bed bug-free.

"Second-hand items such as clothing and furniture are also common bed bug hiding places, allowing pests an opportunity to hitch a ride home with new consumers," said Hottel. "Examining any new items before they enter your home will help you catch a bed bug infestation sooner, rather than later."

So what else should you do to minimize the risk of infestation? Orkin suggests regularly checking your home for signs of bed bugs, inspecting mattress seams, headboards, baseboards and even electrical outlets and picture frames. Experts also recommend decluttering your home to make spotting the insects even easier.

These are the Top 20 "worst cities for bed bugs," according to the report:

Our city has many bragging rights. We have an incredible food scene, were the birthplace of entertainment, and the city of champions. With so much to be proud of, were bound to be humbled and it seems the pest control company, known as Orkin, is looking to do it.

In news you didnt want to know, Los Angeles has made the list of worst cities for bed bugs. Yes, unfortunately, you read that right. Los Angeles ranked number five on Orkins list of 50 cities across the United States. In case youre wondering who made number one, check out their top bed bug-infested cities below:

You can find the entire 50-numbered list here. Orkins ranking is based on data where they performed the most bed bug treatments between December 1, 2022, through November 30, 2023. It includes both residential and commercial treatments.

If youre wondering how to avoid running into these kinds of L.A. locals, Orkin has some advice.

Check the places where bed bugs hide during the day, including mattress tags and seams, and behind baseboards, headboards, electrical outlets, and picture frames, states Orkin. Inspect when you move in, after a trip, when a service worker visits, or after guests stay overnight, and always examine all secondhand furniture before bringing it inside your home.

This actually isnt the first time a bug has made itself an Angeleno. Our city is home to many roaches too so much that we also made the list of roachiest cities in America.
