The cause and treatment for bedbugs | CAA-Quebec Residential

Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) are visible to the naked eye. Brown and flat, measuring 4 mm to 7 mm (0.2 to 0.3 in) long, bedbugs are attracted to the vibrations, warmth, odours and CO2 that we give off as we breathe.

This insect got the name bedbug because it feeds on human blood in the middle of the night while we sleep, most often hiding in mattresses or elsewhere in the bedroom. Bites are often clustered in the areas of the body that are most exposed during sleep, such as the arms and legs.

After feeding for about 15 minutes, a bedbug will retreat into hiding for about a week. Bedbugs are extremely resilient and can survive in a dormant state for months on end without food.

Females lay two to four eggs per day, depositing them inside objects, cracks in furniture and floors, crevices along baseboards, etc. As an infestation intensifies, the colony grows beyond the bedroom to other rooms in the house and, potentially, to neighbouring houses. Bedbugs travel inside wall and floor cavities, inside ducts and along pipes and electrical wires.

Bedbugs leave stains on bedding and mattresses. (Brown stains are from blood after bites; black stains are the insects fecal matter.)

Like many other invaders, this species spreads because of widespread international travel and exchanges of goods. Bedbugs can be found in suitcases, fabric, furniture, cargo vehicles, etc.

Top 10 Worst States For Bed Bugs | Which State Has The …

If you have ever encountered bed bugs in your home or hotel room

You might be wondering how they got there.

They can quickly get into your luggage and travel back home with you, causing an infestation that can be a nightmare to deal with.

Every state has their problems, those of which can affect you as you travel from state to state.

So its natural to wonder

How do you know if the state youre in has a high rate of bed bug infestations?

How do I minimize the risk of encountering bed bugs?

What states have the lowest number of infestations?

In this article we will answer these questions and run through the list of the top bed bug infested states and cities.

On that note lets dive in.

Unfortunately, there have been reported bed bug cases in EVERY state in America.

Not a single state is immune to infestation.

For years now, the number of cases have been growing, with thousands of reported cases in 2019.

Though the problem isnt only affecting America.

In fact.

Bed bugs are not native to America, and they have spread to every continent nonetheless.

(except Antarctica)

Thats because they are avid hitchhikers.

Bed bugs tend to climb into peoples luggage or belongings, allowing them to quickly spread as people travel.

As transportation becomes more efficient, people are traveling more and more. This leads to bed bugs being spread faster than ever.

This is the reason bed bugs have made a major comeback in the 21st century.

That being said

Bed bugs dont discriminate. They dont care about state borders and cleanliness.

Theyre not attracted to dirt, so they can be anywhere Whether it be run down apartments or 5-star hotels.

These pests have been significantly multiplying over the past 3 decades.

In the early 20th century, bed bugs were a very common problem. But that was before we had all the pesticides that eradicated them

Or so we thought.

From about the 1950s all the way to the 1990s

There were very few cases of bed bugs in the US. The pesticides did the work, and we almost entirely forgot about the little critters.

But then they came back with a vengeance, utterly resistant to the chemicals that used to kill them, reproducing at a lightning-fast pace.

From about 2015 onwards, the number of bed bug cases have exploded.

The popular pest control company Orkin, has recently published reports on the worst states for bed bugs, as they do every year.

For 3 years in a row The number 1 Bed Bug State is.

Maryland.

Which continues to be one of the most bed bug infested states. Mostly thanks to cities like Baltimore and Washington D.C.

Indiana and Georgia originally werent in the top 10, but since 2019 infestations in these states have grown.

With Indianapolis and Atlanta holding the 9th and 10th spot, of bed bug infested cities respectively. .

Rounding out the top 5 we have Illinois and California. You can begin to see a trend here, whereas states with major cities are more infested.

(Due to population density)

To sum up here are the top 10 most bed bug infested states:

Here are the top 10 cities in the US with the most cases of bed bugs in 2020 (Source: Orkin)

To help you get a bigger picture of the spread of bed bugs across the United States

Here are some bed bug maps that are eye-opening.

Based on a bed bug infestation map published in 2016:

It shows that New York City had the most reported bed bug incidents at the time a staggering 4,490 reports.

Thats a massive difference from the figures of Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, which had 485, 446, and 403 reports, respectively.

You can see that the east coast is hit by far the hardest.

This is because the east coast is much denser than the rest of the country. There are also many popular tourist, and business travel destinations in these states.

This map also has powerful statistics about where bed bugs are found.

Here are the top locations where bed bugs are located by percentage (2015 Survey):

For more recent insight, we also looked at a 2019 map of bed bug infestations.

Its almost as if youre looking at the same map.

And as you can see from the top 10 list above, things are not so different in 2020. The share of states being hit the hardest is consistent, the only difference is that the sheer number of cases have gone up everywhere.

You can see that some of the states have traded places, but the problem still exists everywhere.

If youre planning on moving to another city in the US or youre planning a vacation, you may not want to consider cities that have seen a jump in cases.

Here are the 10 cities with that have experienced significant growth in bed bug infestations.

For the first time, Toledo and Myrtle Beach made the top 50 list according to Orkin.

Though both Ohio and South Carolina have hard hit states for years.

As mentioned, the degree to which a state is infested has a lot to do with population density. Similar to infectious disease, bed bugs spread more when there is more person to person interaction.

Therefore, here are some of the states with the lowest numbers of bed bug infestations.

Though infestations in the above states is relatively less

Its still important to be cautious about bed bugs when traveling.

For example, If youre staying at a hotel you should properly inspect the hotel room for bed bugs before spending the night.

If you happen to encounter bed bugs anywhere across the US, be it your apartment or hotel, we can connect you with a lawyer to discuss your options.

If youve suffered bed bug bite injuries or experienced a bed bug infestation in your residence due to someone elses negligence

You may be able to file a lawsuit and potentially get financial compensation.

Keep in mind that our lawyers can only represent you on a pre-litigation basis only. That means we can only assess your situation to help you determine if you have a case.

If you do, a licensed attorney will fight for you to get compensation for your losses.

Bed bugs found in small section of University of Alberta’s …

Update:1st flr will remain closed Fri for completion of bed bug treatment, entire bldg to be closed Sat for further precautionary treatment

On Saturday, the entire building will be closed as computers and tables in the affected area will be removed and processed in a heat chamber, she said.

Fifty chairs will be removed and treated off-site.

Murphy said there is nothing to suggest bed bugs had infested any library books, but as a precaution, staff have asked the company to check the rest of the library.

That way we can feel really comfortable and confident when we open on Sunday morning, she said.

This is not the first time bed bugs have been reported in the library. Last winter, the fifth floor was treated after reports of bed bugs surfaced.

The library, which opened in 1951 and is the largest on campus and the second largest research library in Canada, is expected to reopen at 11 a.m. Sunday.

We want to reassure our community of users it is highly localized, its being treated and we are, as a precaution, checking to make sure everything else is fine, she said.

What bedbugs are

Bedbugs are small, wingless insects that have an oval, broad, flat body and a short, broad head. Adult bedbugs are usually four to five millimetres in length and will increase in size by a few millimetres after a blood meal. After feeding, adult bedbugs change from brown to a dark red colour.

A female bedbug lays several hundred eggs in her lifetime. The white eggs are usually about one millimetre in length and can be very difficult to see. The eggs usually hatch in six to 17 days. There are three stages of life for a bedbug: egg, nymph, and adult.

Bedbugs have not been known to transmit disease. However, the bites may cause itchiness and people dealing with an infestation may experience stress, anxiety and loss of sleep.

Bedbugs are found all over the world, often in hotels, motels, homeless shelters, work camps, apartments, private homes and sometimes in businesses or offices. Bedbugs prefer dark, cool places such as bedding and along the seams of mattresses where they can easily feed and hide. Other favourite hiding places for bedbugs are underneath wallpaper, behind picture frames, in electrical outlets and crevices in walls and furniture.

Bedbug bites can happen anywhere on the skin but most often on the face, neck, arms, legs, and chest and most often during sleep. The bites look similar to and may be mistaken for flea or mosquito bites. When a bedbug bites, saliva is injected into the skin which may cause a localized reaction, i.e. red lumps or an allergic reaction in rare cases. Most bedbug bites will heal with time and do not require medical attention. Bites may itch and scratching can result in an infection. Antiseptic creams and antihistamines may relieve the itchiness of the bites. Seek the advice of a health care provider for severe reactions to bites or for secondary infections.

Some indicators that bedbugs are established in your home include:

An infestation does not mean that the home or facility is not being cleaned adequately but regular inspection and cleaning may help prevent an infestation. Call your local public health inspector or a professional pest control operator to assist in bedbug identification and to confirm the infestation. Professional pest control is often the best option to eradicate a bedbug infestation. If an infestation is heavy, the room may have a sweet fruity smell. Tenants are encouraged to notify the landlord immediately after confirmation of an infestation. Tenants may also contact the local public health inspector for assistance in dealing with bed bug infestations in rental accommodations.

Bedbugs are very hard to eradicate, but there are some steps that can be taken to help address the problem.

Pesticides can be an effective solution to a bedbug infestation but may not kill all stages of bedbugs. Pyrethrin aerosols may be used in cracks and crevices to treat for bedbugs but may require multiple applications until all the eggs have hatched. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions to safely apply pesticides. Consider the services of a professional pest control company for heavy infestations.

A professional pest control operator may assist in bedbug identification and confirmation of an infestation.

Eliminating bedbug infestations in multi-unit complexes such as apartments or condominiums that share common walls can be challenging. If you are aware of an infestation in your building, adhere to the following.

Know what a bedbug looks like and where to look for them.

Be mindful of possible sources of bedbugs.

Reduce or remove places where bedbugs can hide.

Take precautions when travelling.

Questions regarding bedbugs may be directed to thepublic health inspectorin your area.

Bedbug infestations challenging Regina pest controller …

A Regina pest control company says it is becoming difficult to combat bedbugs, an annoying insect whose population is growing across North America.

Shawn Sherwood, one of the managers at Poulin's Pest Control in Regina, told CBC News his firm has experienced a three-fold increase in calls to deal with bedbugs.

"We're doing one or two of these a day, five days a week," Sherwood said. "It's become ridiculous. We'll be back a second time in five to seven days. ... And unfortunately, we're now seeing that it requires, sometimes, three, four or five treatments to eliminate the problem."

Part of the problem, according to Sherwood, is that bedbugs have become resistant to the insecticides approved for use in Canada.

He said the federal government should allow more effective chemicals, which are available in the United States.

While the tiny insects do not pose a serious risk to health, they can create considerable discomfort. Like mosquitoes, bedbugs feed on human blood, usually while you sleep.

"You will see bites and itching after a couple of days from being bit and you'll start to wonder what it is," Sherwood explained about the most common signs of bedbugs. "That's when people come to us."

Health Canada responded to CBC News inquiries about treatment options via email, and said it had created a working group to examine the bedbug problem.

"A stakeholder working group has been created to facilitate the submission of applications to register products that would help to control this pest," the federal ministry said in the email. "The mandate of the working group is to help find a solution to the bedbug problem, which includes an integrated pest management approach."

Sherwood mused that it might take some personal experience, to move federal officials to more concrete action.

"Somebody with a lot of power in Ottawa will get bedbugs in their home and they won't like the solutions that we have and maybe they'll wake up and smell the coffee," Sherwood said.
